My girlfriend has succumbed to that selfie/donation thing. I might have to dump her.

Was about to put the same! I'm all for promoting awareness of Cancer Research, but all this promotes is what a fucking miracle make-up does to some on my friends list. Some of those pictures put me right off my breakfast

We need aids, cancer, world hunger and war to stop the world population from spiralling out of control. Eradicating these things would be counter productive to the human race and would just speed up our collective demise. If anything we need more deadly diseases/illnesses and another world war to get the numbers down again, certainly beats a one child policy. Just thinking of future generations.

Selfies are the epitome of all that is bad with social media regardless of the reason. What kind of person takes a photo of THEMSELVES to show to other people? Egotistical much?
One of my friends who went through a horrendous time fighting Breast Cancer found it quite insulting that woman are 'brave' enough to post pictures of themselves without make up. I can see the reasoning behind it however and if it raises awareness and people donate then fair play. As an aside, on a similar note, over in Luxembourg we adopted Avenir Beggen as our adopted team and about a dozen or so of us used to watch them each Sunday (there wasn't much else to do to be honest!). The chairman there, Jean and his wife Viviane were so so nice welcoming us. Beggen used to be a succesful club in Luxembourg and they were sliding down the leagues and had money problems. Every match, without fail Jean and Viviane would come up and shake each of our hands and thank us for coming, often he would buy us all a drink in the clubhouse after the match with a beaming smile on his face. He was a true gentleman. Sadly I found out he finally lost his battle with cancer on Monday, such a horrible disease.

My wife posted a selfie in support for her mother who died of cancer in November. Not something I very much agree with but all her friends did it so she felt "obliged".
But much more to the point these people who post "selfies" are supposed to donate to £3 when they post it to Cancer Research.
Which my wife duly did but not that many others have done so making it pointless, as a picture of yourself will not raise awareness of anything.
Although I personally think the government should put much more money into cancer research than they do, in the last 3 months we have raised £289 for CRUK, but we shouldn't have to in an ideal world.

There's no 'rules' about these selfies they're all ficticious. It all seemingly started when one bloke said he'd donate 30p to CRUK for every picture posted. Obviously it doesn't take long for these things to go viral.
Essentially it's just another stupid chain letter-esque type thing, like when women put up cryptic statuses about what colour knickers they've got on and what show size they are. All in the name of 'cancer awareness'.
At least some cottoned on to the fact that there is supposed to be some good coming out of it and people are donating. I've spammed every photo which doesn't say how to donate or makes little reference to cancer with the number to text a donation to CRUK.

Anyone agree with my hypothesis?
Partly. There is an argument for nature using widespread disease as a form of natural population control. Our planet is getting far too overpopulated. Not really in terms of the pure number of humans, but in terms of outstripping natural resources. The human race will need to colonise other planets to survive.

While we're on the subject of what's wrong with social media, this kind of thing is another example: Share to show respect? You can fuck right off, how does clicking 'share' show respect? Why does the creator of the meme get to decide what is respectful and what is not? Does me not clicking mean that I am being disrespectful? Crap like this does nothing but garner attention for whichever attention seeking cunt made it.
