I'd agree that Earps would have had more outreach to the general and sports watching public. Her shouting "fuck off" was also one of "those" moments in sports in the last year. She tried to work with Nike to take womens' kit seriously and they've turned around their stance by doing limited runs of her jersey. I think she's done well on the pitch, has a personality and was successful in terms of the criteria to vote on.
What a role model. The Corinthian Spirit alive and well.

I imagine Ronnie O'Sullivan is known by a few hundred thousand who would know to vote.
I'd be shocked if anyone in this country with even the smallest of passing interest in sport hasn't heard of Ronnie O'Sullivan. I'm not saying they all know how his sporting year went but in terms of name recognition its not a close contest between him and Earps

SPOTY lost any remaining credibility it had when Zara Phillips and Ryan Giggs won it

Zara Phillips was the year The Ryder Cup team rallied around Darren Clarke after he lost his wife too.
Made a total mockery of it.
I can't imagine it was a vote then as how the hell would Zara Phillips have won.

I am sure there are lots of people who know about him, but not people who be engaged to vote in this type of thing, not this year anyway. Snooker has long since fallen to the depths of TV viewing figures, so it would be a stretch for anyone in that sport to win a popularity contest.

Even more specifically, it is a BBC Sport competition, so that means it skews towards sports covered by the BBC and few get more coverage or viewers there than Women's Football, so it shouldn't be a great surprise.

Fuckwit Joey Barton just can’t help himself can he. His comment after Mary Earps won BBC Sports Personality of the Year
‘ To win before Ronnie O’Sullivan and Frankie Dettori…?
Well, that’s just madness to me.
Both almost genius like in their respective fields.
They’ve lost to a big sack of spuds that plays in goal for a girls team. ’
Dion Conroy seems to like some of what Barton says.

Having to pay Ulez to protect Londons Green air zone. The same London that had a massive firework display for 20 minutes filling the air with smoke. The irony.

Hotel or catering butter pats. Not enough to coat one slice of toast. Which neatly brings me onto hotel conveyor toasters. Once through and the bread is warmed up and pappy. Twice through and they look like they’ve had a trip via kingsdown crematorium. Still no sign of Jake Young.

I’ve only got one but fill that up - then have another two plastic bags full in the kitchen. Then the day after the plastic is collected I decant as much from the plastic bags into the blue bag & preset. Tedious. …and despite the increase in online shopping and the amount of cardboard each household has: at no point during this review did they think we need more (or bigger) plastic boxes for cardboard

I stated in the TV thread that I'd recently watched and enjoyed the ITV Drama 'Mr Bates vs the Post Office'. I'm always drawn to true life stories as it always seems to stir the emotions more. I only found out, via media channels that Paula Vennells, the ex-Post Office boss who was in charge during the scandal was awarded a CBE - https://news.sky.com/story/post-office-scandal-petition-to-strip-paula-vennells-of-cbe-signed-by-1-million-people-13043852and Alan Bates, one of the many people whose life was changed forever because of the Post Office refused his OBE https://euroweeklynews.com/2024/01/03/hero-of-post-office-scandal-alan-bates-rejects-obe/Power does something to a certain type of people, and it's very ugly.
