Every manager will use a club in a lower division as a stepping stone if a bigger club comes along - that is just normal and its the same as any industry.  How many people would turn down a promotion and a pay rise?  Football, like it or not, is an industry like any other.  To think that Paul Sturrock should have some kind of loyalty to his employer of nearly a year in a town he has no connection to is extremely naive.

Which is all fair enough. Just don't go round telling people you have a contract for X months and won't be breaking it.

<awaits...but he wasn't paid so contract was void/had Plymouth clause in it replies>

On the football side I thought he did a fine job. Which is why I was pissed off when he left. He also left us up a creek with a shit paddle.

May I be the first to say well done - but what did you say exactly, and who disagreed with you?

I think Sturrock was a good manager for us, at the time Wise left the wheels had started to come off a bit with a couple of home defeats. Getting the appointment right was important as we had to get out of the division as another season if that league would have killed us off both in terms of the support base and financially.

Yes, the football was a bit dire at times but Sturrock knew what it took to get the team promoted and he achieved the objective. If you appointed any manager in any profession and he achieved the objective you set them you'd be happy.

Strurrock recognised the Wise/Poyet contribution and wryly referred to it in his post Walsall interview where he said I'd like to thank Dennis Wise for the work he did to help me to my 3rd promotion in 5 years. Strurrock bought into the commerical side of the club and must of been well aware of the mess we were in.

I don't blame him for going, he wasn't getting paid and the Fitton takeover was in no way certain, we all remember when Fitton and Co nearly walked away completely in frustration at the old Board. He still had strong ties to the Plymouth area and looked after himself and his family.

The Plymouth fans still have a huge respect for him and if you see comments from St Johnstone, Sheff Wednesday fans he is generally held in high regard. Wish the guy all the best whatever the future holds for him.

Am I the only one slightly bemused at the 'god like ' status Sturrock seems to have with some of fans?  He got us promoted and yes i'm happy he did but lets be realistic, any half decent manager would have done with the squad we had in that shit league. We were running away with it with Wise/Poyet at the helm. We finished third under Sturruck and IIRC the football was dire. Add the fact he jumped ship at first opportunity (not buying into the fact 'cos it was Plymouth blah blah blah) Fitton asked him to stay on (and i'm sure Fitton would have paid him!) but he was keen on wanting out. Mr Sturruck, like so many others simply used us as a stepping stone for bigger things.

That aside wish PS the best of health and good luck with his new role at PAFC.

Spot on.
