Confirmed: http://www.pafc.co.uk/page/NewsDetail/0,,10364~1900811,00.htmlPLYMOUTH Argyle Chairman Sir Roy Gardner today announced that Paul Sturrock will cease to be manager of the club and Paul Mariner, the club's Head Coach, would take charge of all football activities with immediate effect.
Sir Roy said: "The board has decided to make this move following the continuing poor set of results.
"Paul mariner will take charge of all football matters until further notice.
"We are convinced that we have the capability to improve our performance and remain in the Championship."
Paul Sturrock will continue with the club in a business-support role, working with Argyle Executive Director Keith Todd.
The board would like to thank Paul Sturrock for his considerable contribution to Plymouth Argyle over many years.
I personally won't shed a tear at his managerial demise, though he still has a job there anyway. I know most think he walked in impossible circumstances. But I think he short changed us. |

I don't think anyone in the situation he was in would have done any different. Higher division, (probably) bigger wage packet, and a place where he was considered very highly. Easy decision, and I don't blame him.

The fact that he is staying on at Plymouth is a sign to me the Parkinson's Disease he is suffering with must have been a factor in stepping down. I Wish him well, Nobody with the same history as Sturrock would have turned down the opportunity to return to his favourite club and get away from the financial ruin our club was in at the time.

Am I the only one slightly bemused at the 'god like ' status Sturrock seems to have with some of fans? He got us promoted and yes i'm happy he did but lets be realistic, any half decent manager would have done with the squad we had in that shit league. We were running away with it with Wise/Poyet at the helm. We finished third under Sturruck and IIRC the football was dire. Add the fact he jumped ship at first opportunity (not buying into the fact 'cos it was Plymouth blah blah blah) Fitton asked him to stay on (and i'm sure Fitton would have paid him!) but he was keen on wanting out. Mr Sturruck, like so many others simply used us as a stepping stone for bigger things.
That aside wish PS the best of health and good luck with his new role at PAFC.

Agreed, we owe more to Wise and Gus than we do to Sturrock. Who is basically a shit cunt cos he left when the going got a bit tough. |

Every manager will use a club in a lower division as a stepping stone if a bigger club comes along - that is just normal and its the same as any industry. How many people would turn down a promotion and a pay rise? Football, like it or not, is an industry like any other. To think that Paul Sturrock should have some kind of loyalty to his employer of nearly a year in a town he has no connection to is extremely naive.
