I seem to remember coming down was worse than going up

Having a skinful before the game may have been both a hindrance and a help I suppose.

Yep, pretty much - climbing up those stairs outside of the Shrivvy stand was not nice - i only remember it as a kid a couple of times so have managed to block it out of my memory

I imagine no one on here has been there so this is a bit niche, but the stand at Gateshead when I used to watch them was the steepest raked I have ever experienced, going and up and down that used to be bloody dicey/unnerving on a Saturday afternoon after a very heavy Friday night out!

Anyone confirm the game / season?
My first ever game I stood in the middle of the away fans under the seats.
That is when no segregation with the Stratton Bank.

Switched to the TE very soon after that.
Stood back on the Shrivvy Road just where everyone else appeared to stand when the atmosphere moved to the side.

My first game as a young boy was seen from the Shrivvy Stand.  Those steps were part of the adventure.  Enhanced by  the excitement of that first glimpse of the green pitch from on high.  Coming back down after the game was at the hair raising end of the excitement spectrum, a preparation for the surges of the terraces which would follow as a teen.

My Dad took me to my first game in 1967 - a 0-1 home loss to Reading. We stood near the corner of Shrivvy Red and the Town End.
By the 1980s I used to stand not far from where FH has indicated - in front of a barrier between half way and the centre circle, TE half I think.
Used to be a bloke behind us always calling for a long ball down the middle if anyone passed it square. Ardiles’ team drove him mad.
I sit in the Arkells now, but have never shouted “get it forward”

Started off behind the bog wall in the TE in 1968. It’s a damning indictment of the club that the fucking thing is still there.

I can remember my uncle taking me to a game around 1974 when Birmingham City were the visitors and there was constant fighting throughout the game where the Town end met the shrivenham road stand as there was no segration in those days.

That pic brings back some memories. I can remember patting Dave Mackay on the back when he took a throw in for Derby County in front of me when I stood in that enclosure as a young lad. A few years later he became our manager (1971) I wasn’t so impressed with him after his short time with us.
