Hang in there Sussex and STFCBird things will get better,I've been through that depression thing and almost succeeded in doing the wrong thing, although it was under different circumstances,i lost everything  in the thatcher years due to a serious illness where it left me blind in one eye and virtually crippled, after suffering numerous operations and bouts of depression not to mention the amitryptiline drug that turns people into zombie like people,i got through it thank's to a strong loving family and friends which have made me a better and stronger person today.

If you have your health you have everything, although it more than likely dont feel like that a moment, things will get better for you.

I feel for anyone who has to go through a real depression, it's not a nice thing to experience for you or the people who love you.

Good luck to you both stay strong and positive, things will turn around for you.

Had a look for jobs but the problem is finding an employer which is registered as a training office with my institution. I took the point of view that an employer is not really going to be willing to take on a trainee with six months or so left until qualification. Once I qualify, unless they are a larger firm, they will not be able to compete on salary and it would be too risky to pay for my studies only to watch me leave shortly after. I'm not saying that's what I would do, but certainly the perspective they will have.

I've not heard anything more on the secondment, but I know the department I will be working for and I having done some work for them before, if past experience is anything to go by, it is far more basic work and far more flexible in terms of working hours. Some careful organisation on my part will allow early finishes on Friday and not too early starts on a Monday.

So I've bitten the bullet and paid for the course and study materials. I'm extremely lucky that I can borrow the money from my mother at zero interest. When I qualify I am going to pay her back as soon as possible and I'm definitely going to surprise her with a decent gift for doing so.

The unpaid time off will have to be overcome by socialising and spending less, but in truth I won't have much time to do that anyway (given the huge amounts of travel I will have to do). I can see a lot of opportunity to study in my own time as well because staying in hotels is generally very boring. Another bonus are that evening meals on expenses will save me money on food. I think next month and May will be the biggest problems, so I'm just going to have to budget around the months I'm better off. Hopefully it will get me into the frame of mind to save more in the future too.

Obviously not pleased about the whole debacle, but I'm determined not to let it bring me down and to turn this into my advantage. I still have a job and this is not a permanent solution. Rather than continuing to throw my toys out of the pram, I'm just going to knuckle down and make sure this type of thing is unlikely to happen to me again.

Oh and Birdy, I know I've promised to come and visit you again (and hopefully Paul this time). Might be later than planned but I will definitely honour the promise. I had a KFC yesterday and thought of you  Wink

Fair play Si, it's only 6 months, then you'll have a few more options.

Yeah, good luck SP.  I guess this was why you were unsure about Worldnet.  I'll let you know the latest date to pay the last bit, and it will be a cheap weekend once you're up there.  However, if you can't do it, and we get enough people, I'll let you have your deposit back.

Yes mate it's why I was worried about Worldnet. I think I should still be ok to give you the money, it's probably best I do it when I next get paid, so end of February. The actual weekend will be a couple of days after my finals and I will have finished my secondment by then too looking at the planner, so I still think it's a plan and a welcome celebratory piss up!

I think you are doing the right thing Si Pie. Knuckle down and get qualified, put up with it being a PITA and you will be in a far better position to look around when the job market picks up.

Work sent me a letter asking for the training course costs back (for the final exams), which I received today. They also informed me that if I did not pay, they would be forced to take legal action to recoup the costs. Even though I offered to pay them a lump sum originally, the plonkers.

Smiley

The good news is that due to the way they've worded the letter, they will now be unable to recoup the other training costs when I leave. Going to contact CABA tomorrow and see if there is any chance of a grant now I have the letter as evidence.

Still no news on my secondment though!

Know what you mean. There is no hard and fast date for knowing at our place. But every month more people get whacked. Thankfully the UK has been OK so far, but they are effectively shifting jobs to India so I'd imagine things won't stay that way too long.

Still, every month I get paid is a month closer to the economic recovery.

I'm ok for at least 6 months, and based on our Redundancy pakcage I'd be ok if I left then for another 5 months or so.

I have a sheet of A4 pinned to surround around my desk that reads 'Each day that passes is a day closer to the end of the bad times.'  Certainly the way I see it.  Firms have to be forward looking when making decisions like these.  If they sense that the 'bottom' is approaching, job security will start to improve.  But waiting for that point, I agree, is horrible.
