I disagree entirely. His motivation might be crazy, but that doesn’t mean he wasn’t motivated by something, and I was curious as to what it was.

Just read he held a grudge against an as yet unspecified ‘organisation’, and he believed Abe was part of that. Batshit, then.

It's a bit like the bloke who killed Jo Cox as she was an "enemy of the people". People who voted for Brexit and others who believe conspiracy theories aren't all so Batshit crazy they are going to kill someone.

Agree, but what you said before seems to suggest we shouldn’t try to figure out what motivates people to do batshit crazy things (like kill Jo Cox or Shinzo Abe). We still need to know what delusion they were acting under, especially if it’s shared by others. If I’ve misinterpreted what you meant I apologise, but that’s what I took your meaning to be and that’s what I disagree with.

sometimes someone gets radicalised. brainwashed by design. That's an interesting one. How do you stop that way of thinking when we have bombed shit out of their homeland (for example).

Same with whatever our domestic brainwashed  do, different root cause. And I guess that's the class of person you mean when you say 'figure it out'.

But sometimes they are just batshit crazy, impossible to rationalise.

What reason do you need to be shown?

Another interesting one would be somebody like Ted Buddy. Was he born to rape, murder and feel no remorse, or was he somehow influenced by his environment/upbringing to do what he did?

One way or another I don’t think ‘he’s just crazy, leave it’ is going to give us much insight into why these people do what they do.

I think there are whole branches of medicine, Psychiatry and Psychology to name just two that do precisely what you suggest in terms of understanding why people do what they do.

The difference between how an individual acts as opposed to a community who have a grievance against another group though is that the individual has to be micro managed to be able to predict future behaviours, and we can't imprison people because of what they might do in the future.

Thats what I was getting at, but probably not very coherently!

Have you ever seen the Ted Bundy interviews not long before his execution? Really fascinating in that you can see how adept he is at manipulating people; he’s basically trying to suggest he’s a sociopath (a product of his environment, with a focus on the influence that violent porn had on him) rather than a psychopath (born with a lack of remorse). But I think the general consensus was that he was the latter and the porn thing was an excuse to try and get some clemency, or at least sympathy.

I’ll find a link and edit it in

I agree. Although I have dabbled with psychology, I keep on being tempted to do some proper study. The concept of brainwashing is really fascinating and important in trying to understand 'culture' and how we learn and are educated.

Thanks interesting and chilling watching that!

Sometimes wish I had gone into forensic psychology. Although there is probably a personal price to pay to some degree in working with Psychopaths and Sociopaths your whole career!

I worked with a detective who spent some time interviewing Ronnie Kray and Peter Sutcliffe at Broadmoor as part of a project to understand the whys of their type.

He said the first thing he did after dealing with them was shower- they made him feel unclean.
