The Hitcher absolutely scared the pants off me the first time I saw it and it remains one of the scariest films I've ever seen, purely due to Hauer's acting, far scarier than any of the gore-filled splatterfests.

Seen Dodgebal and remember the old pirate-like coach ("dodge, duck, dip, dive and.... dodge") who threw wrenches at them? That was him.

He also delivered the best line in the film.

'You're about as useful as a cock-flavoured lollipop.'

One of the greatest films ever made.
