I only saw him play once, in charity game for at the County Ground in 1982 a game he played with a certain George Best, Don Rogers, Mick Channon, Mike Sumerbee, John Francombe, Ian Botham and Viv Richards.
Even with one eye and being in his mid 40s he still made a few excellent saves when he came on.
He was also due to have played at the CG in 1971 in the combined John Trollope/Roger Smart Testimonial game between the Town and Stoke City, which I attended. But for reasons I can't remember, Stoke pulled out and were replaced by PNE! Bizarrely, on the day, they sold the original match programme (which I still have) featuring Stoke City complete with a typed teamsheet as an insert.
The evening also included a 'kickabout game' between an ex-Swindon team and the "Top Ten XI". The ex-Swindon team is listed as: Roy Jones, George Hunt, Terry Wollen, Keith Morgan, Fred Ford, Mel Nurse, Alan Ball (!), Dennis Brown, Roger Smart, Jack Howarth, Maurice Owen, Fred Thompson, Peter Doherty, Arnold D'Arcy (sic), Danny Williams and Ken Skeen. The "Top Ten XI" consisted of: Ed Stewart, David Hamilton, Miki Anthony, Richard O'Sullivan, Dick Richardson, Paul O'Shea, Gene Latter, Malcolm Roberts, Jeromy Bullock, Troy Dante, Krise Ife, Junior Campbell and Kevin O'Shea. Others listed in the original programme who, subsequently failed to show on the day, included:Jess Conrad, Dave Dee, Frazer Hines, John Peel (!), Brian Poole, Norman Rossington, Bobby Smith (yes, that one), Tom Courtney and Ian McShane.
