Yes, it's fair to say that is desperate attempts to keep BWFC within the elite made him quite the disliked figure outside of Bolton.
I think you mean the bloke was an utter self serving twat.

one of the many books I absolutely hated at school.
but I gave it a go later in life, and realised that it truly was a brilliant piece of literature, I just wasn't ready for it at 14. go set a watchman was good too.
rip Harper Lee.

I remember TKAM from school quite vividly.
That said, she was hardly a prolific writer was she. 2 books in 90 odd years!!? If I was that productive in my job I would have been sacked years ago. Quality over quantity I guess.
RIP

I think everyone hates the books they're given to study for English Lit. I was always jealous of my mates who got to do 1984 at the time, as I'd already read it and loved it, but I'd have probably come to hate it if I had to do it for GCSE!
The follow up I would rather ignore, but TKAM really was one of those books "everyone should read". RIP Harper.

The follow up I would rather ignore, As a matter of interest, wass that because of the portrayal of Atticus, or because the story wasn't as good?

Both. I saw it as a bit of a cash cow, personally.

Back in the day I could read a book in one or two days and wished I'd been given a choice for exams. Do kids still read books? Consoles and social media seem to be all they're interested in.

It was definitely held back by Lee for a long time.

I dropped out of school quite young, but I was lucky my parents encouraged me to read a fair bit so I did read some stuff. I'm 24 though so I didn't have an iPad when I was 5. And I find kids fucking annoying now. (Sorry nan, keep waiting.) I read a hell of a lot more than I did at school though. I don't see how forcing you to over-analyse a book is going to teach you to love literature.

Yeah the over analysis really does ruin any chance of enjoying a book in school. Still think TKAM has only one character with any depth at all, but perhaps I might like it if I re-read now.

Strangely when I was at school we didn't have to study English Lit. 8 "O" levels. 3 sciences...Physics, Biology, Chemistry. Latin.....History, Geography, English Language, Maths. In later years, I became very glad that I was never forced to over analyse a book, and so developed a love of literature.
