Perfection is not attainable

Playing out from the back is not a strength of his, and not necessary for a Holloway team.  Maybe, Bycroft wanted a move because of his ability was not being fully utilized.  Bycroft is in my opinion is a decent enough goalkeeper as a shot-stopper and playing it out from the back but wasn't a good enough fit for this side including not consistently finding the front three with longer clearances.  Too many long balls going out for opposition throw-ins seemed to occur.
Agree totally, fairly decent shot stopper, not a bad long ball distribution with throws and kicking but his overall reading of the game was poor.

He made some terrible decisions coming off his line and he couldnt catch a cross to save his life, but that doesnt seem to be a huge part of the game now. Many managers seem to like a keeper to save shots and not command their area and let defenders do the defending - and there lies the problem....Bycroft didnt have a defence that could adequately deal with crosses either which highlighted his lack of command of area.

I still think he could well come good in a few years but he does need to improve his all round ability by a fair bit, his style may not suit lower league teams though where most teams hump balls into the box regularly.

The cold truth reference Bycroft is that he wasn't and isn't good enough for league two. He was on loan to non league previously, and was signed based on locality/cost to plug a gap. Like most players he had a decent game or two, but by in large he was not good enough. He often parried shots that resulted in further goal scoring opportunities and mostly goals.

I think its admirable and brave of him to seek first team football. I would be surprised if he gets that in league two, so its back to non league for him in an attempt to prove himself.

So, an interesting question is Bycroft worse than Kovar?

Yep. I’ve never known a keeper to make so many mistakes, yet get away with it and still be dubbed as a ‘good shot stopper’.

Swindon Kovar - no way. But that was then.

We do forget that Kovar was during our L1 season - a significantly higher level than L2 has been the last couple of years.

I seem to remember Kovar standing out as being much more of a disaster and weak link in the team than Bycroft and I think of him as the worst keeper I have ever seen for us (who has played regularly). That said it was in league one and Kovar has gone on to better things.

I disagree, factoring in the level of football and mistakes I think Bycroft has been significantly worst, Bycroft literally made mistakes out of nothing, Kovar’s was generally bad positioning or lack of experience. I don’t think the impact of lack of crowds can be underestimated either.

I don’t think Bycroft is a EFL quality keeper. There seems this myth around that he is good with his feet and a ball playing keeper, I just don’t get this. He made god knows how many mistakes with his feet and then his long range passing was awful usually ending up in touch.

Talking of Kovar, was reading the other day that Ten Hag (who sold him at United) doesn’t fancy him at Leverkusen and PSV are in talks to sign him. Another move you couldn’t have predicted 5 years ago…

Bycroft - Kovar - no comparison Kovar was awful for us, Bycroft was adequate, I think with more experience he will make a decent keeper, probably need to drop to non league for 1st team football though, otherwise it is battling with someone else for a place
