Kovar was an odd one.

He was one of our worst goalkeepers of all time, but at the same time, you also weirdly knew he was going to make it.

I didn't think he'd get *this* far though in his career.

Any news on the trialists and whether they remain or not?

I would assume the ex Bristol City and ex Torquay lads will be at Supermarine tomorrow, they would have to have been pretty shocking in training to not get as far as the first pre season game. I expect 3 or 4 more trialists will materialize as well. Only guessing of course...

The Torquay lad was in training clips from Tuesday so he’s likely to be there tomorrow.

Think it’s about time we had a look at revamping our goal keeper coaching.

I can’t remember the last time one of our keepers got any better for being here. We’ve had decent keepers but feel the likes of Ripley, Brynn, Benda, Wollocot - came here at a good level, continued at that level & left at that level.

I thought Bycroft was adequate in his first half a season & was glad we kept him but really expected to see some progress from him last season but we didn’t.

Do we have to go back as far as Wes to find a keeper who actually got better whilst he was here?

I see what you mean, but is Bycroft the only goalkeeper in that time to actually spend more than one season (and that was 1.5 seasons) here? Kinda hard to judge progress when nobody sticks around. Vigs was here for four seasons, but it didn't really seem like his playing ability was ever really the issue with managers.

I mean - yeah fair point not much longevity with our goal keepers but we saw massive improvements in a lot of our squad last season from November to January!!!

I get that it’s a lot easier to freshen up outfield players under a new manager because you can change formation & tactics whilst also tweaking positions not something you can really do with a goal keeper granted.

…but if our keeper coach wasn’t Mildy would more questions have been asked by now?

I think that’s slightly harsh. Benda, Mahoney and Brynn all had their first EFL loans and went up to League 1/Championship the following season. Wollacott restarted his career here and also got a League 1 move.

I do think to a certain point you are right, Mildy is such a hero with fans he can do no wrong, is he a good enough coach? I dont know as I have never seen his work, the other players and keepers seem to love him as much as the fans do though.

Steve Hale seems to keep getting jobs as goalkeeping coach too and TBH I dont think any keeper ever improved while he was GK coach with us too.

Mildy is probably worth having around the place as a person and he certainly has vastly more experienced than say Steve Hale had.

Either way I like Mildenhall being around the club, hes a motivator and big Town fan and I hope he is a fixture for a long time still.

Granted - their next move might have been a step up but were any of them infinitely better in their last game for Town than they were on their first?

Is Mildly a good GK coach? Who knows? How can anyone know? it's just a rehash of the old cone gatherer argument.... i.e. John Gorman was a better assistant manager than Mike Walsh ... Gus Poyet was the best assistant we ever had...or whatever. If a keeper has a great game, how much of that is down to the coaching? Similarly, if they have a stinker, how much blame should the goalkeeper coach take? I can only judge based on what I see and hear and on that basis I agree with JJ... he clearly loves the club and appears to be a very positive influence and of course has lots of playing experience. so is he the kind of person we need around the club? Definitely... is he a good coach technically? No f****** idea mate!

Goalkeeper is a funny position and not easy to judge - I remember Hoddle thinking Hammond was a better goalie than Digby for a time (probably until he fucked up monumentally at Peterborough) and I'm pretty sure not many, if any, Town fans agreed with him.

I look at it that they are only as good as the defence in front of them.
