Wellens tenure last season was short granted but 9 points from 9 games doesn’t point to ‘good enough to survive’

Look at Oxford last season. Started really slow and made the playoffs. I’m not suggesting Wellens would have got us to the playoffs but he would have steadied the ship and got us the right side of the relegation line.

You only need to look at where the most of last seasons squad are now to see how good they are.
Or how many goals they are scoring.

Have we signed anyone today?

Obviously not, hence why we are going over this old ground with Richie Wellens again. Smiley

He definitely deserves some of the blame for the poor squad he put together last summer.

Wouldn't argue with that. After not retaining much of the Lg2 winning squad the only players I think that were decent that he recruited were the 2 Smiths. (Jonny has certainly gone on to be a fine player for Burton, Matt Smith less so) the rest, as quagmire has alluded to were poor. Obviously I don't know the story behind the budget but I suspect that wouldn't have been as healthy as he would have liked as Power appeared to be cutting the purse strings. Keeping us in the league would have been regarded as a success. Whether he would have done that is questionable and something we will never know.

Wellens signed Kovar, Fryer, Grounds, Pitman, J Grant and Stevens who were all very poor. Of course he has to take some blame for last season.
Not one of those players is good enough for L2 let alone L1.

It’s all very much dependant on how the players are managed and how they fit in the managers team. Ask any Swindon fans on their opinion on Sam Parkin and most would say he was a championship level standard striker when he left Swindon in 2005. I bet if you speak to any of the fans at Ipswich or Luton they would probably say he was league 2 standard at best.

Horses for course.

Because one season they were all good signings the following season they were all crap.
If Wellens didn’t make the signings then he obviously gets no blame for last summers recruitment but similarly gets no credit for the previous summer in that case.

Horses for courses.

A mate of mine modifies that to "horses fuck horses". Which is equally valid.  Cheesy
