Out of interest, this was the table when Wellens went to Salford.

Amazingly we were above Oxford in the table at the time and they ended up getting in the bloody play offs!

I still can’t see how you can berate a manager who won the league playing brilliant football, recruiting well and getting Doyle to score at will. All that had nothing to do with Wellens?

Nobody is lucky over 40 games or so.

I've not seen anybody saying he didn't do well that season. But it seems as though he REALLY struggles if he doesn't have the perfect team, and there are questions over why his teams seem to suffer from so many injuries.

But surely we’re only judging him on what he did here - not other clubs.

I don’t care if he fucked up at Salford and struggling at Donny.

People ARE saying he was lucky here. I just don’t buy it. Blaming Wellens last season is akin to absolving Power and Sheridan for the debacle. As if we were in such a parlous state when Wellens left that nobody could have turned the tide.

He was only in charge for 9 games.

Nope.

I'm looking at his career overall. Which has actually been VERY poor if you take out his season with us.

If I looked at our season only (and conveniently overlooking the start to last season), then I'd be saying he's a fucking brilliant manager. But I'm not choosing to cherry-pick what I look at and doing so puts question marks over our promotion season.

And nobody is blaming Wellens for last season. But he was a part of it.

I would have Wellens back at Swindon in a heart beat.  We played very attractive football and he engaged with the fans and community.  He had an eye for a good player and took a midtable team playing stale boring football to a league winning team that played the game the right way.

If Wellens was in charge of Swindon for the whole of last season then we would have comfortably stayed up.  At least we looked like scoring under his stewardship and the players appeared to be happy playing under him.

I hold no grudges against him leaving for Salford.  Wellens worked at Swindon day in day out and saw the mess that Swindon was in.  He moved to Salford to try and further his managerial career.  It didn't work out at Salford but in a strange way he has furthered his career again by moving to Doncaster.

I hope Doncaster do well this season and that Wellens gets to manage in the Championship and then maybe in the Premiership if another team gives him a chance.

He definitely deserves some of the blame for the poor squad he put together last summer.

As stated previously wellens no doubt knew what was going on behind the scenes with power and what was to follow so who can blame him for jumping ship and thankful for the way he turned us around in his short time here but I still think we would have survived if he had stayed the season.

Wellens signed Kovar, Fryer, Grounds, Pitman, J Grant and Stevens who were all very poor. Of course he has to take some blame for last season.

Isn’t that a big part of why he left. Power was more interested in squeezing every last penny for himself rather than handing it to Wellens. The good players he did recruit were binned off by Sheridan. My only gripe was Kovar.

The team and squad assembled was good enough to survive in league 1. Unfortunately the replacement manager did all of the damage.

We assembled a brilliant team in league 2. If they all stayed we would have had a good crack at making the playoffs in league 1.

However that is the issue of assembling a squad where half of your first team are loan signings from other clubs. Hopefully Swindon will learn from this going forward.

If Wellens stayed then how do you know if they wouldn’t have turned out good.  I thought Pitman was one of our better players last season but he wasn’t used to his strengths.

Having watched the first 4 games of this season, Pitman would be tailor made for this current team.

Wellens tenure last season was short granted but 9 points from 9 games doesn’t point to ‘good enough to survive’

You only need to look at where the most of last seasons squad are now to see how good they are.
