Reid was a strange one - on paper he looked like a to acquisition, but the reality was so disappointing.  I can’t immediately think of another player that promised so much but fell so far short.

I know you're new, so it's understandable, but we had a lengthy debate when Reid signed.  I suggested that he wasn't the sort of thing needed at the time, as history siggested for a promo side, you needed a RB with a couple of season's experience at least, whereby they weren't trying firstly just to establish themselves as a pro.

It is odd how having an inexperienced keeper doesn't seem to matter for an auto side.... you'd think that it would be the one position where experience was needed.  I didn't want to point out during the season that Benda fitted the Turner/Digby/Smith/ Foderingham template for fear of putting the kibosh on him.

Phil Smith had played 150 games in the conference before we signed him.
Not sure that really counts as inexperienced.

Smith had played 5 FL games.... so inexperienced at that level, for the purposes of the discussion.

I often used to go to the football combination games in the late 70s early 80s when we were away at a Northern outpost in the league just to watch a game on a Saturday.

Decent level of player too, used to be split roughly North/South at Birmingham (not Highworth Wink ) with every London Div 1 team fielding a side that often had a mix of first teamers coming back to fitness and youngsters.

I remember in 1981 (I think) Spurs brought down a team full of 1st teamers like Villa, Galvin, Ossie, Perryman, Daines, Brooke, Miller, Hazard, Taylor, Gibson and Falco. Brooke scored a 40 yarder for them to win the game in front of a 5,000 crowd in a full North Stand.

I saw Trevor Brooking, Kerry Dixon, Liam Brady, Frank Stapleton, Pat Jennings, Ray Wilkins, Tony Woodcock, Kenny Sansom and many more.

I think thats a great idea.

Great memories and great for fans to see them play as well as younger players getting experience against them in a keenly constested league throughout the season and so much better than the odd under 23 game in the middle of nowhere.
Check out the league table below and realise the standard would have been good
