Yes lets get this thread back on track now. The season really starts in just 2 days time with the first competitive game, hopefully we will see a few new faces soon. Any idea who they might be? You're right and apologies for posting on the wrong thread to the non bullies out there but there are ways to ask for correctness which will be adhered to. I still thing we will get Bennet and a forward we maybe haven't heard of

I don't think we will sign any player that we have to pay a fee up front for TBH. I don't think SH was ever going to be a realistic target financially for us.

I am not so sure. There are never really any upfront fees these days any way they end up being paid in installments or have great sell ons

I assume all online 'sources' should be approached with some caution.

True, but there's a difference between "Bloke with some genuine knowledge passing on rumours that may or may not pan out" vs "Kiddie sat in his bedroom copying shit from some other rumour account that just made it up"

I know we often pay installments for players, Woolery being a prime example, but I think with the financial belt tightening going on any due to Covid any more than a nominal up front fee with add ons would be somewhat foolish from the club. But saying that Power will invest if he thinks he will get a return on that player in the future. I do think that several clubs will be ahead of us in any bid having a higher available cash balance due to selling players in this window. Northampton, Rovers, Oxford and Peterborough are all sitting on decent fees for players sold so that may well give them the edge in any future transfer if the club they are buying from is struggling for cashflow (which Southend are). Basically doing what Bournemout did to us with the Ritchie transfer....they have the money up front so get a better deal from a desperate seling club.

Doesn't that assume those clubs themselves got an up front fee rather than instalments etc? Wouldn't be suprised to see clubs throughout the league doing a lot more lay-away deals

Each club that I quoted as having money have sold players with an up front fee not as a total transfer fee, Rovers for instance was reported as an up front fee of £500k for JCH rising to £1.2m. Obviously if you believe what is reported in the press.

The clubs you mentioned have all done what Power started out doing in 2013-2015 and that's making a decent profit from younger players they have brought in but once the cooper era had finished we kindness of lost our way in seeking out those players

I think there may be confusion here. [surely that’s not possible] Most player deals have an initial payment - that’s probably what the £500K for JCH was - with add ons of additional payments that become due when, for instance, an agreed number of appearances are reached, or if a player is sold on. What is different now is that the agreed additional sum is itself increasingly being agreed to be paid in instalments to ease clubs’ cash flow problems. So, in the JCH case, that £500K may well have been paid spread over one or more seasons. We would never know that, as the info released to the press will always be either “Undisclosed fee” (if it’s Swindon) or the headline figure (£500K for JCH). Given the current absence of income from attendances, it seems highly unlikely that any lower league club will be paying in full up front.

Not Humphrys say EFL Hub
That’s not actually what EFL Hub says - they say Rochdale lead the chase over the Gas, Swindon, and Franchise, in spite of Rochdale not being able to meet his valuation. This looks like someone from Rochdale trying to talk their interest up a bit. We actually know nothing, which is probable exactly what Wellens wants.

The tweet if correct said that the player would rather be up north.
