It was all thanks to Uri Geller.

The second half performance was much better, but then this was a Swiss team who made god knows how many changes in said second half.

I've been complaining about the difference in style from their premier league games, to England games for ages and have put it partly down to the talented non-english players in the Prem. Grab the English on their own and they seem to want to just pass it sideways for long periods. zzzzzzzz

I went to the game, it started a bit slow and we looked nervous but we controlled the possession and looked the better side for the whole game. Their goal was completely against the run of play. Both our goals were very good and we could easily have scored more if the Swiss goalkeeper had not made a couple of very good saves.

I thought Joe Cole should have been man of the match not Gerrard. Rooney up front on his own always seems a bit isolated but he did ok, though Crouch up front, Rooney on the left and Wright-Phillips on the right worked much better - very promising. Another excellent performance from Crouch, great first time volley and started the build-up to our second goal.

Overall the performance was not amazing but decent and a good start to Capello's reign.

You asked, I answered, last four in both competitions.
Not even qualified this time and not likely again if we play like this.

So when we thrashed the favourites Holland 4-1 we were lucky.
We outplayed Germany in the world cup in the semi, definitely the best side in the competition, lost on penalties again.

he stated other than that game delly welly

A world class England won the world cup after a 0-0 draw with France, a lucky win against a better Argentina with 10 men, a very competitive 2-1 win against Portgual, a disputed goal against Germany in the final.
They are remembered as the best we ever had, Chewey Mint.

I'd quite forgotten the 0-0 v France....in fact it never happened we won 2-0.

There's bollocks and then  there's bollocks.

Sorry Uruguay was 0-0, stand corrected Reg.

I went to the game too and have to agree with you. First half we really were poor, and Brown and Cole were the weak links. They gave the ball away and provided nothing in the way of support for the wingers. Both our goals were good and there were flashes of what we expect an England side to play like. We can only hope Capello can get them to turn that into a proper 90 minute performance.

Nobody's mentioned the "ball-watcher".Yet another game where he's cost us a goal, got away with it in the first half when the Swiss guy missed an easy header  but as long as Ferdinand plays we will never win a tournament-liability imo

I didn't think Ferdinand was that bad, certainly no worse than Brown, Upson or Ashley Cole. Brown was particularly bad, he really shouldn't be playing for England and Upson is no way near as good as Terry but he won't get near the team when he's back.

Ferdinand was by no means worse than Brown or Cole but I think Upson was decent. The fact I was trying to make is that Ferdinand unlike the other three seems to be a shoe-in and I dont think thats a good thing.

He's much better than Upson though...

Brown was cack the other night, I said he shouldn't have been in the team and think I was proven right well before half-time

well yes he is better than upson obviously I just hope woodgate stays fit for a while ,

Terry is slow and basically just good in the air,if vidic, ferdinad, toure or carragher are out for lenghy spells the respective clubs miss them , Chelsea are doing better without Terry that speaks volumes

I don't think Terry is overrated, he's been one of the top defenders in the premiership over the last few seasons so he deserves to be rated highly, has to be one of the first names on the team sheet for England when fit.
Are Chelsea really doing better without him? They didnt beat Portsmouth or Aston Villa and they need to win those sort of games to have a shot at the title. Also Chelsea have spent way more on their back-up players than most teams, if he played for a different club they would miss him more.

John Terry isn't overrated, he is a top player and never seems to make mistakes.
However, I would like to see Woodgate given a chance over JT or Rio in a friendly or something, Woody deserves it.

I think Woodgate is overrated. People always go on about if he could stay fit for a while etc. etc.. He's never fit, ergo, overrated imo.
