Title: Swindon Town v Sutton United pre match drivel and matchday thread 23/24
Post by: 4D on Monday, September 4, 2023, 13:59:38
Another game I am missing....Sutton even got beat at home by FGR. They have lost 5 league games in a row after battering Notts County 5-1 on the opening day.

We should hammer them, whether we do is another matter.

Swindon 2-1 Sutton att: 8,822 (131 away)

Well whatever your attendance predictions you may want to add two more other than myself and the DNA. Just had a message from an old business acquaintance to get a cpl for him and his daughter. They are massive Cardiff fans and ST holders I think. Follow them all over the place and have either done the 92 circuit or very nearly plus a load of non league clubs. Nice to catch up plus add a few extra quid to pay off our debts 🤣🤣

A tight 3-1

I think it will be a decent crowd, most people back from summer holidays, decent style of football. We will break the 9k barrier with next to nothing from Sutton, less than 100.

This.

Their fans are getting increasingly frustrated by their long ball style and hoofing it down the wings.

As I said in the other thread.

Sutton - 1 win (and that was against 10 men) in their last 17 league games and only 4 draws.
No clean sheets in the last 14 league games for them.

From their forum.

I dont think anyone is seriously suggesting gray should go, but if he continues to stubbornly persist with tactics that are not effective, that may change.

Could go either way.

Convincing 3-0 win anyway.

First home game of the season for me. Hoping to see a first goal of the season as my only other game so far this season was Donny. I expect a physical challenge from Sutton and think we may miss Khan. I’m hoping Kinsella is fit as I’m not sure Cain has the physical capability to put his stamp on this game.

Interesting that both Donny & Sutton who did a fair bit of early business in the window just gone now find themselves at the bottom of the league.
Doncaster I gather have a lot of injuries & on evidence from last Saturday could be in a false position.

Not sure how Sutton are doing on the injury front, but it was commented that they had made a fair few decent looking signings, on paper anyway.
An early goal against might dent a fragile confidence.

Hoping to survive being marched around Old Town in a rapid hydration exercise in 28c heat before the game.

Errr do you lot know there's a game on tomorrow and this is supposed to be a footballl forum?

We're going to do them 5-4 after going 3-0 up.   Charlie to have a blinder and get his shooting boots out of the loft.

They will score with at least 2 corners, we of course won't.

Come on you reds.

This will be my first live game since last autumn, I just want to go and enjoy the games I can go to while I'm actually in the UK.

If it's shit behind the scenes I'm very poorly placed as someone who has never lived in Swindon and now lives abroad to be able to do anything so I just want, for now and for the next few weeks, to enjoy the matchday experience while I'm around.

Hoping for something like a 3-0 / 4-1 but a comfortable 2-0 would be good too.

Town will continue their fine home form and win 3.0 with 9328 watching Young Kemp and Shades score. Hoping RA will be there in his capacity of CEO. Never met the man but by default he is one of our own.

What are we thinking today then chaps?

Flynn seems to have suggested that someone is coming into the midfield and that Kinsella won't be fit...

For me, I'd move McEachran to the Khan position. He's been better at breaking up the play in the last few games I think.

Then Cain comes in for a chance to show that he has an EFL career ahead of him.

No change elsewhere.

Hopefully we will be unchanged other than Kinsella (If fit or else Cain) instead of Khan.

No need to change the team otherwise, we created chances last week at Donny but failed to actually hit the target consistantly. Keep creating chances and we will score a few. We still had 14 shots but only the 2 on target and they were weak.

Charlie just needs to get his shooting boots on as hes creating chances for others but not yet being able to get any of the glory himself, but that will change soon I hope, he works his bollocks off creating but has been a bit wayward in front of goal himself so far.

There have been 5 meetings between us and Sutton previously with Town winning 4 and losing once, no game has ended with more than a single goal seperating the teams.

2023 Sutton  2-1 Swindon
2022 Swindon 3-2 Sutton
2022 Swindon 2-1 Sutton
2021 Sutton  1-2 Swindon
1981 Swindon 2-1 Sutton FA Cup

There have been 3 home games against them with Town winning all 3 so far scoring 7 and conceding 4 times.

They have started the season poorly with just 1 league win in the first game of the season followed by 5 consecutive league defeats, their only win otherwise being a win at Wycombe and a penalty shoot out vs Cambridge in the cup.

Results so far this season
Sutton  5-1 Notts C
Sutton  2-2 Cambrdge *EFLC
Barrow  2-1 Sutton
Sutton  0-1 Gillingham
Sutton  0-3 Wimbledon
Newport 3-1 Sutton
Wycombe 0-1 Sutton *EFLC
Sutton  0-1 FGR

Their current top scorer is Omari Patrick the free signing from Carlisle in the Summer on 3 goals with Beautyman and ex Town player Harry Smith both on 2 none of them have an assist so far.

Swindon go into the game with an undefeated record in 90 mins with 2 wins and 5 draws so far in all games with 2 wins and 3 draws in the league and are 1 of only 3 teams in L2 undefeated so far (AFC Wimbledon and Mansfield the other 2)

Jake Young is top scorer on 7 and Dan Kemp 2nd on 4 goals both also have 3 assists each.

Town currrently sit in 10th place on 9 points with a game in hand, Sutton sit in 23rd place on 3 points.

The only players involved who have played for both sides are Harry Smith for them and Lewis Ward for us.

Will be difficult against the more agricultural/attritional style of Sutton today who like the long ball to the big strikers and quick wingers and get men behind the ball, we will need some craft and skill to break them down.

They have played a straight forward 442 in every game so far. They play with out and out wingers Coley and Patrick and 1 big man up front (Smith/Angol) alongside a smaller striker (Kashket).

So far they have conceded 12 yellow cards and 1 red card, Swindon have conceded 14 yellows and no reds so far.

I wish FBT would take a few more risks with his shooting from distance, he has a cracking shot on him, look at the FGR goal for instance. Nowt to lose in having a pop from 25 yards, test the keeper.

Optimistically Cain should be technically well above Sutton's level. Alternatively, he's at risk of being bullied out of the game. A good opportunity for him to show he can make it in lower league football.

I like Cain I think he has a good pass and shot on him, but hes not really shown any consistancy when he has come in and often looks a little off the pace and makes a few wayward passes.

I hope he plays a blinder today and makes it hard for Khan to get back into the team next week.

Not sure if thats under Flynns instructions to possibly slow the pace of the ball down with "on the deck" passing.

Tactics seem to be to pull Sutton forward then run at them with pace when they get too high up as they're slow on the turn - and boy is it working.

Could easily replace Brewitt with a more dominant centre back and not really impact us going forward. Our defence and lack of cover from our midfield is a major issue that needs addressing. We can’t always be needing to score 3 or more to win games.

Think we have to expect this now!  Blistering football for the first 25 but to keep that up was a big ask. Happy to be in front and feel we have the upper hand and look more likely. Both wing backs playing well. Kemp looking good,Cain slotted in well and McEachran doing loads of donkey work. Got to think Young will get a hat trick. FBT and UGM play that way and that's the way it is I suppose.

I don't think he's particularly good, but at the same time he is the only player in our team who even tries to defend, it's not much of a surprise he gets overrun. The tactical structure we have is essentially "Overload" on FM, it's 10 attacking players, UGM spends more time at left wing than he does at centre back. It's brilliant in a way, but I wish we'd stop being quite so silly when already 3-0 up.

We’re shipping a stupid amount of goals defensively, it’s clear something needs to change there, whether that’s from midfield cover or defenders capable of more than our current 3. If we’re looking at the CB’s then FBT and UGM are essential to how we play going forward so won’t be dropped but whether it’s a commanding CB coming in or the structure changing, something needs fixing because we can’t rely on scoring 3 goals every week to win.

Very tricky trying to balance that without effecting how we score goals the other end too much but I think it’s doable.

We could replace Brewitt with a commanding CB but it wouldn’t improve our defence.
Said commanding CB would still be left exposed by our marauding outside CBs
…if this mythical commanding CB wasn’t as mobile as Brewitt - it would probably make our defence worse…

It’s not to do with him being a scapegoat, but if you are only going to play with 1 centre back who’s actually going to defend then they actually need to be someone commanding and he just isn’t. Also he’s the obvious one to drop out to inject a bit of height into the team.

Title: Re: Swindon Town v Sutton United pre match drivel and matchday thread 23/24

A commanding centre back still can’t mark two men when Dokes or FBT give the ball away up the pitch and a midfielder doesn’t drop in.

This is our system. It is what it is. An immobile lump at CB and we are fucked.

I think you have to look at ensuring the midfielders - wide or central - know who is to cover loss of possession by them.   Hopefully Flynn will be working on that.  Not least right now in the changing room.

I would like a commanding CB to counter big strikers against us and to be a threat at attacking corners and to defend corners.

I think a lot of the problem is that instead of both wide CB's going forward at the same time they need to be more structured and only 1 of them at a time go forwards always leaving 2 defenders back at all times.

So often they both go forwards at the same time and it leaves Brewitt in a vulernable exposed position of being the only man left back.

We don't need a commanding centre back, we need a fucking miracle worker in that role.

You’d need some one commanding but also quick & able to read the game well.
Prime Rio Ferdinand would probably work in that role.

Agree with the comments about FBT and UGM.

Brewitt does his best, but can’t cover that. Maybe a big lump free agent might?

You either do that with the CBs or have one of the middle CMs be responsible for dropping back in at CB when we break.

Is this our longest unbeaten start to a season since MacMahon in 95/96? we went the first 9 games of the season unbeaten then.

If people can't enjoy that without worrying about the 2 we let in (the other 1 was a total fluke)thats a shame. All of a sudden do we have to be afraid of Walsall, same points as Crawley? We have a team now that's got a great chance against anyone in this league. It is a "shit one" after all as many keep saying.
Today must have allayed some fears about our apparent lack of depth. All 3 subs, including Minturn gave great performances, Cain stepped in seamlessly, still a few injured to come back and Khan
MC Eachran did the donkey work today,Kemp was unbelievable second half and Brewitt, for me was outstanding at the back. 2 more goals for Young as well.
I'm pretty happy with things, personally.( oh,also, a dead cert penalty not given and Charlie was onside for that header in my book)

Not for me, at least until Charlie becomes ineffective in the stuff that doesn’t include scoring goals. He’s still a huge player for us.

I would keep starting him and Young and allow RHM to be disgustingly good off the bench after 60 minutes.

Flynn:
- Disappointed with the goals we conceded
- Should have had 2 penalties
- Ref said he probably made a mistake not giving the penalty when Sutton went up the other end and scored
- Dont like the fact we let them back into it. But at least we grew back into it and were 'blistering'
- Wanted to be patient and not go long. Knew they didnt want to press. So, told goalkeeper to be patient
- RHM was excellent. Has been chomping at the bit. Unfortunate to get injured when he did and then Young scoring 9
- Not happy to play kamikaze football. He wants to play educated football
- Probably want 2 more players in
- Kinsella back next week. Clayton probably two weeks
- Free agent spoken to yesterday. Nothing has happened. Still waiting.
- There are funds to bring in 1 or 2. Wants the right ones, not just numbers. Hopefully get that done this week
- Rest and recovery is important. Hottest he's been around a football pitch
- Kemp closing down players in 89th minute. Know how good he can be. Thought he was excellent
- Austin: All strikers are frustrated. Flynn and Austin both celebrated at the end. Austin very clever play to make space. He wants more goals, but is the first one up celebrating when we won.

Enjoyable day today overall, happy for Cain as well.

Some big questions at the back but I’ll postpone being worried whilst we’re still unbeaten. October will be the real test of whether we can maintain this against the better sides in the division, if we come through that with a respectable point haul and no hammerings then I’ll be happy.

We’re at the point where we need to see someone in place of Brewitt, just to see if it really would make an improvement.

It's definitely entertaining. And going forward, the likes of Kemp, Young and RMH are super confident and very lethal. I even don't mind how Austin has evolved from pure goal scorer to a kind of elder statesmen who can drop deep and play some nice passes - let's just forget his strop.

But this time is so unbalanced. Both outside CBs go charging forward without much thought, leaving is so exposed through the middle, where a better team would have took advantage today. Of course they contribute a lot to our attack but there's got to be some balance there. With Hutton already not really that bothered to defend (failed to get back and get tight so many times today), we need our CBs to be a lot better at defending.

I hope the free agents are a CB and a defensive minded midfielder.

Wow! Just back from yet another cracker of a game. What entertainment!

Whether tightening up at the back would impinge on the attacking aspect I don’t know - but,  for now, let’s just enjoy it.

Thought Cain was v. good, Young, apart from his goals, looked very good. Ukakwe is coming on leaps and bounds.

For me, RHM settled the game - with one of the best individual goals I’ve seen for a while.

Sutton surprised me by not bring hoofy at all. The pen that wasn’t looked nailed on to me - I was right in line with it. Austin’s ‘goal’ was offside.

Could have been 10-6.

Brilliant stuff!

Yeah...there's always been a world of chaos going on in the background, we just get to hear a lot more about it these days. The fact is, it's all out of our control...but (against all the odds it would seem) we have a really good manager and a really good team playing some great stuff (yes we really could do with an actual 'defensive' defender, that would make a huge difference)

You just have to enjoy what's going on, on the pitch without stressing too much about what is going on, off it...

That's not to say that questions shouldn't be asked of course (I have as many misgivings as the next man)...but if you can't just enjoy times like this, there's no point being a fan...

Youngs in my opinion was a Penalty.
At 3-0 it was simply complacency, they were poor and we allowed them back in the game.

One bright note, the players are fitter than the last 2 seasons. That was incredible in that heat, Kemp particularly incredible stamina.

Sky Sports highlights only have the goals.
Still think Austin’s second was good (only seen it twice though)

Cant complain about the penalty on Young not being given. It was as stonewall as the one FBT (should have) gave away in the first half…

Had a cracking day, few pints and losing my eldest to Uni in a few weeks which will be tough as been everywhere with me.
Agree try to leave the off field shit behind because right now we have a decent product on the pitch.
Need Ryan Edwards to sign and could be a surprise package. Clearly need Kemp and Young, both back to their best today after last Saturday.

Entertainment Saturdays are back. Destroyed them first 20 odd. Kemp and Young unplayable when they’re on top of their game, first goal out of nothing but shows what a turn of pace can do in a flash in this league. Austin unlucky in second half but first half not his finest hour or so. RHM- wow. crying out for that horrible bastard in the middle- we’ve needed him all season.Thought Uwakwe had his best game for us today, lots of good passes/crosses off his left peg. We switched off at 3-0, stonewall pen not given on young also which led to the third for them. Defence is what it is, it’s gonna ship goals, would love Edwards in there. Low (ish and compared to the 9s and 10s we know we can get) crowd, hopefully we can get back to 9+ soon. Kamikaze reds strike again. It’s fucking great when successful but you wanna pull your hair out when it goes wrong. Thank fuck it’s good on the pitch and we look like we’ve got a proper team and manager this season. Flynn speaks brilliantly.

So why was the foul on Kemp right at the end not a Red Card. Sutton player was the last one and stopped a goal scoring opportunity. Ref just gave a yellow!

from memory he knocked the ball towards a wider position so judged not a clear goalscoring chance.

but while the ref wasn't shit, he still bottled some decisions. foul on young looked a clearer pen and red to me

Yeah you know what I take it back. Forgot he set up the first. Done well to keep it alive for Youngs second also. Couple times he really should have got on the end of a cross- one from Uwakwe stands out. Still in the camp that he’s offering a lot to the team and creating space for others. Thought second half he was unlucky. 100% right sub to make though, RHM gave them nightmares.

It was a scared ref.  It was late, it was high it was cynical.  It was borderline red for intent.  But he bottled all the big decision so he wasnt going to change right at the end.

Shade and Rush were an absolute nightmare for Sutton. Imagine having to face that pace in those conditions. They are perfect impact players.

I'm torn on Austin. I'm not sure if he's a hinderance to us or if just his presence and reputation is creating space for others.

I couldn't help but watch Smith today and think how class he'd look in our side. He won virtually everything, great link up play and even managed to get on the turn a few times.

Makes me think a Wickham type striker could be a welcome addition.

I know the fannying around at the back, to and forth with Mahoney, gets on people’s tits but there’s really no point in the upfield hoof as we have nobody to win it, shield it and lay it off so it comes straight back. A Wickham type may give us that option.

Hey guys. When I work a split shift on a Saturday, I normally wander the 40 seconds back to my flat and have a siesta. Everytime I have done that this season I've woken up to us having scored 5 goals.

I tried to fake it last week, I had the day off and hungover as fuck. Had headed to the pub early doors but was struggling at 3.40 ish so I thought I'd try and trick the football gods.  Didn't work.

But genuine split shift work siestas I'm on 3/3. Boom.

Not sure this stat is “verified” but I’ve seen someone saying it took us 17 games to get to 20 goals last year. Now we’ve done it in 6!!!

This system is gloriously cavalier but as largely a “home fan” (I only manage about 3 away games a year) I’m absolutely loving it. After the Sheridan season, Garner (where we were crap at home) and the horror of Lindsey and Morris it is just such a tonic to see us playing purposeful attacking football at the CG.

I noticed he went straight down the tunnel but it was Bodin and Hawes that suggested there was some form of anger shown by Austin, I couldnt really see on iFollow as they panned away from it.

It was such a fun game yesterday and as long as we keep winning, perhaps it is a moot point but I've been having a think about our defensive conundrum...

I actually think that Dokes and FBT had their poorest games of the season yesterday, particularly Frazer.

For their first goal, Dokes loses the ball miles up the pitch. What is interesting is that he isn't even in shot when they score. He really didn't make any effort to get back.

Poor old Brewitt is basically being asked to play Operation Tethered Goat at the back. I think the reason people pick on his 'marking' is that he is being left with at least two men to mark every time we get turned over.

What is odd is that we don't seem to operate a system where anyone is asked to 'fill in' when Dokes and FBT go charging forward.

McEachran, who was excellent yesterday, definitely sat deeper, but I wonder if the answer is to play two DMs? At the moment our midfield is a sort of 1-1-1 with a DM, CM and then AM. Maybe we should be 2-0-1 if that makes sense? And then that second DM becomes the automatic CB cover.

Clearly Hutton and Uwakwe are never going to drop in if our outside CBs go forwards, and that would slightly defy the point of our system anyway.

It's brilliantly cavalier but I do think some subtle tactical tweak might help us.

I totally agree, possibly FBT's poorest full game for Town IMO.

Poor old Brewitt is basically being asked to play Operation Tethered Goat at the back. I think the reason people pick on his 'marking' is that he is being left with at least two men to mark every time we get turned over.
Absolutely it comes accross like this, he has 90% of the time 2 strikers to mark so is caught in no mans land when teams counter us.

What is odd is that we don't seem to operate a system where anyone is asked to 'fill in' when Dokes and FBT go charging forward.
I raised this very question during the game yesterday, we need just 1 of either Dokes or FBT to go "awandering" at any 1 time with the other being regimented enough to stay back and help Brewitt defensively.

Either that or we have a far more defensive minded midfielder sitting back just in front of Brewitt to aid him, something McEachran/Kinsella/Khan/Cain cannot seem to do.

Its something Kasim used to do very well, as did Grant in his first season with us and something Kinsella was said to be good at, but so far he hasnt been able to do comfortably, albeit he seems to be pema injured too.

It's brilliantly cavalier but I do think some subtle tactical tweak might help us.
100% this, could turn a good side into a great side with some defensive tweaking.

Maybe Cain’s performance yesterday goes a little way to dispelling the myth we haven’t got adequate replacements for regular 1st XI starters. Subs coming on and having an influence is another good pointer.

I thought Cain started really brightly. Switched the play quickly and passing was crisp. Cracking goal. He's definitely good enough to be in and around the team.

Flynn also seems to be getting a tune out of Shade. He was asked to do a bit of a different job yesterday, basically at LWB and looked much more tactically disciplined. Again, he's looking like a useful bench asset.

Been saying this for weeks now.

Majority of our fans shouting for a commanding, no nonsense centre back to replace Brewitt.
It’s not what we need. Particularly if the CB in question is older, slower and less mobile than Brewitt - he’d be even more exposed.

What we need is a DM that has the nous and physical presence to drop in with Brewitt when Dokes & FBT bomb forward.

…I wonder if when everyone is fit Clayton & Brewitt between the two of them will take the CB & DM role.

Brewitt is also asked to do a fair bit of "Conroy" work, picking the ball up from Mahoney and stroking it around. If we had a brute, I'm not sure they'd be able to do that either.

It's easy to sit here and say 'maybe we'd be better if we had the complete CB instead of Brewitt' but how many of those are there in L2 and within our budget?

I don't see Frazer going in the middle as Clayton doesn't strike me as the guy to play the buccaneering role, so basically we need to see how we look with Clayton in the middle but again, it isn't a role anyone would want if they weren't 100% match fit as it is hell on earth positionally in this system, so that may be a way off.

I dont think either of those could be disciplined enough to play that role thats needed, they are both exellent at expanding the play and getting around the pitch but neither for me would be capable of playing the more defensive role that is needed.

Kinsella it seems could be if the Walsall fans views on him are right but hes always injured anyway.

Depends who we are playing.

Will probably be games where the best option might be to drop Kemp and play a bit more solid. Some games where there isn’t as much need for Khans energy in midfield & there will also be games when McEacheron’s tidy passing isn’t a fit…
Also be games where the DM himself isn’t needed.

So, I wouldn’t personally say there is one of those three you’d drop to replace with a new DM. Think you’d do it on a game by game basis.

It’s nice and entertaining football, but Sutton were dogshit. I think we’ve got enough chaos in us to be challenging the lower rungs of the play offs, but there’s going to be some spankings

On a totally different point, was their third an own goal off Shade? Didn't necessarily look like it was heading in.
It seemed to take a nick off FBT then hit Shade fully on the shoulder and fly in, the trajectory of the original shot was heading way wide. Not much any of our defenders/keeper could do anything about that fluke.

Seasons like this are what can probably put the whole the fans need to have something to cheer to get going to bed. If we can't be that great at 3-0 and banging in goals not sure we ever will

I did notice George M step back into FBT’s position when he strode forward a few times but not often enough.
No reason they can’t improve this if the midfield are willing.
If Edwards were to sign I’d be fascinated to see if the communication and shape is better.

The defensive shape needs fixing whether it’s an Edwards type or Brewitt in that role. It can’t be both wide CB’s fucking off the other end of the pitch at once because when both our wingbacks are already that high and neither of our CM’s are dropping back, when the ball is lost, we’re in trouble.

FWIW I think a better organiser can also help with that. I like Brewitt as a player, he gives his all and puts his head in when needed and I think he’d actually be decent in an emergency DM role as well when needed but I’m not sold on his quality as a consistent starter and if a Edwards type came in then it would be him who drops out in my opinion.

As stated above, a Edwards type in that middle CB role doesn’t need to be blisteringly quick if the defensive shape is sorted out, so whilst I’m not saying our defensive issues at the minute are down to Brewitt, I’d like to see a taller, commanding CB come in regardless and add some height to that back line for when we’re up against it.

On another note, I was watching Harry Smith on Saturday and it’s a shame we missed out on him because he’s the exact sort of the striker we’re trying to sign at the minute.

it's difficult. Are we better in attack because of our cavalier defending. Does fixing it break the other?

I means theres YouTube. He’s comfortable in a back 3. Played on the right of that I believe. He can get goals too. Just don’t watch his infamous game against Aberdeen that essentially ended his career with Dundee utd. He was their captain also.
No doubt he’s played in the middle of the 3 as of course in a back 4. 6ft 5

A 29 year old, experienced defender like Ryan Edwards is exactly the type of player we need. Whether it’s him or someone else.

Tend to agree with this - although UTR raised a valid point that maybe a better defensive organiser might be better placed to stop Dokes & FBT going at the same time opposed to Brewitt.

The formation leaves Brewitt exposed and Dokes & FBT should have enough about them themselves that they don’t both go but they do….

*shrugs*

I don’t think the fact people want Brewitt replaced for an Edwards type is because they think he’s poor. (I don’t don’t personally think he’s great, but he’s been okay this season)

I think it’s simply the fact we want an experienced head back there, and Dokes and FBT are crucial going forwards, so an experienced, out and out centre back who’s also a leader should help tighten things up.

I know football isn’t played on paper, but Ryan Edwards CV suggests he is a better player than Brewitt, and I personally have seen enough of Brewitt that makes me feel like I don’t want to be relying on him in a promotion challenge.

Fair but unless it’s the middle CBs job to control the outside CBs I’m not sure how a leader massively helps because a lot of the time the only defender he’ll have to lead is himself…

Whilst it’s a bit a of a stereotype - the more experienced leader type CBs tend to be a little bit older & slower and that would be a disaster for us.

Someone in another thread said Shaun Taylor would be great in this team - I think he’d be terribly exposed & look non league - where as someone like an Ian Culverhouse would be perfect.

I think some people also feel Edwards is a 33 year old whose legs have gone.

He’s 29 years old who’s played a good amount of games as captain in the SPL over the last couple of years. I can’t say I’ve ever seen him play, but as I said earlier, his CV would suggest it’s an upgrade.

I'm old fashioned and like to know where they've been playing recently and what standard of football they've been plaing in.
I'm not saying he wouldn't be a good acquisition if he dosen't break the bank on wages but looking at his precious club I'm just a little sceptical on what we would be signing.

Ah well.

If anything it wouldn’t surprise me if Brewitt upped his game again and kept a new signing out of the team.
Another positive would be he could learn how to play the role better with an older squad member in his position.

It’s cool. It’s just happened a few times. I always try and read back but I’ve noticed it happening more so on this forum.
People replying the the post like it was twitter rather than the thread.

Threads can be long, I get it.

Anyways. I dearly wish Edwards would sign for anyone just so we can move on with our lives.
This could go on for years if he just decided to stop playing and not tell anyone.

Not read back yet so as always apologies if anything is repeated.

Well Saturday was a lot of fun wasn't it! It started off nervously as Mahoney seemed to want an age on the ball and Sutton seemed happy enough to let us pass it about between keeper and defence. Mahoney very nearly had his pocket picked and we breathed a huge sigh of relief! It was obvious Sutton wanted us to go long, but we didn't want to and it ended up very chess like. That said, the opening goal came with a ball up towards half way neatly flicked on and Young did all the work to fire home. Good finish from Cain for the second thanks to neat work from Kemp to take advantage of Omari Patrick's slackness on the edge of the box and then a comical third. Charlie can't buy a goal at the moment but it was great to see him in stitches laughing and then pretending to want to be subbed due to him messing up his chance - gleefully/embarrassingly taken by Young. After the opening salvo I was hoping we would exert some control, but slackness at the back brought Sutton right back into the game and whereas half time should have been cigars and slippers, unfortunately it was a bit more tense.

Second half was as entertaining as the first, disallowed goals, penalty appeals turned down and what looked like a clinching goal by Dan Kemp. That goal, very neatly finished looked like it was going to bring an avalanche of more goals, but Harry Smith's deflected strike made things nervy again. The addition of RHM was causing the tired Sutton defence all kinds of problems and he scored the goal of the game to properly put the game to bed. Kemp's slaloming run could have given us a sixth but he was absolutely sliced in half to stop his progress.

And so at the end of the day we take the 3 points, and yet another carnival of goals at home. So refreshing to see after the last 2 seasons or so of miserable, dull games at the CG. You can't say we aren't getting our money's worth! My only concern with our approach, which is working beautifully, it how sustainable it actually is going to be. We are absolutely mustard going forward and our attacking play, aided by the defenders playing very high up makes it look like we'll score with every attack. Conversely we look shambolic at the back and liable to concede against even the poorest of sides. Flynn has spoken already about us not getting into basketball matches, but Saturday was basically just that. A very minor concern that Flynn doesn't have a plan B and the style we are seeing is what we go with.

At the moment, I am very much enjoying the ride, let's get to Christmas time and see where it takes us in the division. Our fixture list has been pretty kind so far so it's difficult to get too carried away. The real test is going to come when we play someone like Mansfield.  Given the nature of the squad we are going to have to be quite lucky with injuries as well.

Yeah Bodin is alright on co-comms do be fair. Hawes is always great value but I find he does seem to get confused at times. I guess it's hard to commentate and look at notes etc but after the third goal I thought it was obvious that Charlie was in fits of laughter and mocking to be subbed as he made a meal of scoring it. Oh absolutely right, their commentary perch almost certainly makes it difficult to see the minutae of things a viewer does. As mentioned before, they do an absolutely superb job so my minor mocking is probably extremely unfair.

What I like about Swindon's comms is whilst clearly favouring the home side, they are never totally biased. A lot of the northern teams tend to get carried away when referee decisions continuously go against them and they often have a huge moan then about how useless the ref is, instead of actually commentating on the game.

Back onto Saturday and the Centre Back discussion, the goals we've conceded so far this season which come to mind (the Crewe long shot aside) have come from 'carnage' in the box. Would an Edwards type defender help things back there? I know others have said that Edwards is quite slow and that would negatively affect the side, but I do think a presence potentially stops the pinball type goals we give away, and makes teams work harder for their goals. It's an interesting conundrum.

Over a 46 game season, our current scoring rate would lead to 153 Goals Scored, which would smash the all time record (Peterborough scored 134 in the fourth division in 1961/2). Northampton scored 82 in running up 99 points in 2015/16.

Does seem unlikely when you see that context, but I'm here for the attempt.

Admittedly only from from watching the extended highlights but I thought Mahoney could have done better with a couple of their goals as well.

Was this table based on where they were when we played them or where they are now?

Regarding Austin. I initially thought the same thing about going straight down the tunnel, but he appeared again moments later and immediate thought there is nothing in it. It was fucking backing so suspected he just went to freshen up for a minute.

After the Kemp goal they were both cracking up. Austin did all the work and someone else poked it home. The usual talisman has hardly had any goals in a freescoring team, I'm sure he is frustrated with that but he has been unlucky and done all the right things and definitely a positive contribution to the team.

I'm delighted for Cain. Kept saying I think there is a player in there and he has started to show it. His technique is great for this level.

Defensively clearly something needs to change as we are conceding too many. I'm not entirely sure what the answer is. Is it another Centre Back? Is it a better DCM?

Another option might be abandoning the outside Centre Backs that get forward and pushing FBT and UGM to the wingback roles and get more centre backs in to concentrate solely on defending. Clearly our wing backs at the moment don't really defend and are attacking first wing backs. FBT and UGM would easily play in those roles and can defend. We'd lose something going forward but it would tighten things up tenfold.

Ref was shit again, but its League Two....at this rate I'd be surprised to get a decent one who doesn't miss  several obvious decisions per game.

Yeah it was pretty obvious when he came back literally 40 seconds later.

His attitude is pretty obviously fine. If anything we look like we've got the best team spirit in years.

Also didn't mention Hepburn-Murphy who might be the most improved player this season under Flynn.

"extended highlights" on youtube that didn't include our penalty incident in the build up to their goal.

Not that 'extended' really.

Just had a look at the match replay. Strange how thinking back I was convinced it was a tackle that brought Young down but actually as he just got ahead of the defender the defender put a bit of an arm out and I reckon Young went down a bit easily.

Between the 8 goals and the 4 disallowed goals, there was quite a bit to fit in, to be fair!

Haven't watched any of it back yet but he's on a hat-trick and through on goal, there's no reason to go down if you're on as hot a streak as he is.  Ultimately, nevermind as we won I guess.

That Austin header was definitely onside, jesus. So frustrating for him.
