What are we thinking in terms of line up...?

Can't help but feel that RHM was held back for this game.

McEachran drops to the bench for Kinsella for me.

I'm going with:

                                      Mahoney

                       Dokes        Brewitt       FBT

 Hutton                                                                 Uwakwe

                            Kinsella          Khan

                                        Kemp

                            Austin                 RHM

Kinsella and McEachran in the middle, but otherwise agree with this line up

If RHM is fit then yes I would go with that, if not then Young to replace him.

I too would pick Khan ahead of McEachran after Saturdays performance.

Not sure it is a good thing when most of our fanbase could likely agree on 91% of our starting line up after one league game. It doesn't scream strength in depth.

Well, I don't think we have picked the right starting line up. There are lots of different options. Based upon what Flynn said:

- Uwakwe isn't fit and didn't do much to grab the shirt. I think he'll be on the bench.
- Ward had a back spasm, but was preferred from the outset. I suspect that will be the same.
- RHM was out for a game or two. I think he will be rested until Saturday
- Wakeling was preferred to Young on Saturday. If Wakeling is injured then that means Young comes in, or does it?
- Can Austin do Saturday/Tuesday?
- As someone already pointed out Shade could be back in the mix. If so, getting him to run alongside Austin may happen.
- So up top could be: Austin/Wakeling, Austin/Young, Austin/Shade, Young/Wakeling, Young Shade or Wakeling/Shade.
- We might try to be tighter in midfield. So Kinsella might start. Its not a given that he comes in for another midfielder. It could be that one of the strikers gives way for him and that we go for Young/Kemp up top.

I am hoping that we have the luxury of getting to see a bit of Genesini for Hutton in the second half perhaps. I'd like to see what his crossing is like and whether he can defend. I suspect that the answer is that he doesn't defend too well!

I think we need Khan in the middle. He carries the ball really well and can operate in both halves.

I'm sure this won't happen but McEachran at LWB? He's a leftie and technically miles better than most in the squad at the moment. I thought he was very good on Saturday so deserves to start if he's fit.

I was impressed with Kinsella's energy when he came on at the weekend. He also put in a lovely cross for Austin (we won't go into that though).

Hoping Austin is up to it and RHM can start together.

Pre match welcome to non league in The Lord John.

This is what it would be like, poky stadiums on the outskirts of small towns and even villages, miles from the nearest train station.
Not disparaging FGR's efforts in making it in to the EFL, they are in L2 on merit as are we.
Stroud & Nailsworth are nice places to visit but lack of a proper integrated public transport network makes this a much better trip on a Saturday than midweek.

So, local derby? Yes.
Fierce local rivalry? No.
Still hoping for some ferocious action on the pitch in the sleepy hamlet this evening though.
And remember to keep the noise down on the way out of the ground, wouldn't want to wake the locals.

Good record here. Unbeaten in league visits so hopefully the team has the wherewithal to keep that run going.
Not sure if they still like to pass it around under the new manager & we'll need to keep an on Matt Stevens if he plays.
A few connections today with UGM & Young wanting to do well, as will Lavinier & former "triallist" JMT.

Austin will be wanting to get off the mark this evening.
Wouldn't bet against him doing so.

We'll get a slightly better idea of direction of travel after the next couple of games, but still too early to be definitive either way.

Sorry, I meant our best possible XI. Which I don't think a single fan would say includes Shade!

Not sure it would be, admittedly its up north and midlands, but I have been to a fair few non-league grounds (probably more that FL ones) over the years and they tend to be more central in towns mainly due to the clubs not having the cash to sell up and fuck off to new builds outside town centres, often the problem is down to crappy public transport in this country rather than the location of the grounds.

Fair enough.

Shame that Shade is an athlete and not a footballer. I still keep thinking that he looked awesome for the first half of both games he played for Walsall against us. If only someone could find his best position and he could learn to play it. Maybe it is up top poking in sc ruffy goals alongside a big CF?

Yeah, the majority of teams in the NL divisions are probably not too bad in terms of getting to and from.
Most of the suburbs of larger cities are reasonably well served by local rail services.
Central locations given over to football grounds could be viewed as prime real estate, so must be a temptation for some owners.
Would make for an interesting study.

Equally interesting is the journey that the new Bury are just embarking on.
Part of me, albeit a very small part, would want to be part of a phoenix club experience, but hoping that it never happens.

                     Mahoney
        Maalife Brewitt  Ward
Hutton.                                FBT
             Kahn      McEachran
                       Kemp
              Austin.      RHM/Young

Don't think McEachran deserves to be dropped.

Probably something for a new thread, but from experience its actually quite good (and different) fun closely following a team that you don't have the historic emotional baggage with, moving about I probably had about 5 seasons attending most home games firstly at Gateshead and later at Lancaster City and it was brill and considerably less stressful that Swindon!

That's how I would have it with Ward in the back three and FBT left wingback.

Presser seems to suggest Shade, RHM, Clayton, Devine, Wakeling are all out, with RHM/Wakeling "possible" which sound unlikely. Then Uwakwe on the naughty step for fitness and Young not 100% either.  Bennnn Ward went off with a back spasm, so perhaps also unlikely.

So team picks itself more or less...

According to the Vegetating forum many seem to think ex Town loan striker Tyrese Demola Huxley Omotoye will get the winner tonight based on him socring his first goal a week ago in the cup vs Pompey, his first goal in 31 appearances!

I can barely remember him playing for us, a couple of cameo sub appearances where he barely touched the ball IIRC in the Sheridactyl season.

I see Lavinier has yet to be fit enough for selection so far for them.

Forgot about Omotoye & Kadji, but that's easily done I guess.
Will be interesting to see how Kadji gets on tonight.
Largely ineffective is the hope but there might be a player in there if he gets regular game time this season.

Free car parks at the bottom of the hill in the centre.
Bus it to the ground at 18:06 or 18:40 if you don't fancy the walk.
Traffic should have cleared a bit by the time you get back to the car after the game.
It's all downhill!

For similar reasons I wouldnít be surprised to see Jake Cain appear at LWB at some point.

Still think we need Kinsellaís industry in midfield - so personally would go with Kinsella, Khan & McEachern.
Kemp showed some good skill & touches but felt he flattered to deceive Saturday.

Or play Kemp in the further forward No 10 role if Wakeling, RHM and Young are injured.

With Kemp sat closer to Austin and for McEachran, Kinsella and Khan in the middle.

Too early to tell, but I think Crewe aren't a bad side. They have comeback from 2 goals down in both league games so far this season.

Just watched FGR highlights from their 2 games - Looked as if they could have scored and conceded more than they did. Think RHM would have troubled them more than our other strikers - Although I am convincing myself that Shade running at them would trouble them.

I think itís unfair to even think itís training related.

Khan is ill.
Wakeling was a knock which we all seen happen.
Devine hasnít been fit ever since he signed for us.
RHM and Clayton have both been injured on and off since signing.

Itís just one of them things.

It probably doesn't help signing players with such a history, especially if you then plan on trimming your squad size down.

Wellens did likewise, but at least seemed to get higher quality to balance the risk of injury absences.

In Flynns defence, none of the injured players are his signings.

Oh Iíve thought about it, Iím just interested in how everyone waxed lyrical about the previous training team.
This was mainly because of that first season that Gladwin and Williams were used wisely.

I wanted to see Kinsella start with GM tonight, just a shame we donít have Khan on the bench.

17 days till window shuts.

Kinsella very lucky to stay on the pitch there.

Mainly cos it's one of our strikers doing most of the crossing, trying to find the other striker in the box, whilst the midfield are god only knows where.

FBT yellow.

He's been booked in every game this season which is a real worry.

Least encouraging performance so far. Midfield looks worse without Khan.

ok. Dokes and especially young have been superb.

the issue is the shape and personnel  we are playing in midfield isn't working. it's non existent for large periods.

leaving 2 v 2 at the back from goal kicks is asking for trouble, hence FBT booking .

time for Flynn to tinker

Agree with the comment that itís ĎKevin Keegan footballí. Forget defending and letís attack.

We need to be able to step it up a gear in the second half, but donít have that bit of quality in the final third.

Our midfield looks minute and porous.

Brewitt has been superb, apart from 1 rogue pass.

FBT has defended very well and took a good yellow.

The rest have buzzed around to little effect.

Even more worrying

We fell apart second half against Crewe

If we get any worse 2nd half it'll be a big defeat....

Hopefully we actually improve..

At this stage I reckon we'll both hand out and receive a few batterings this season, but ultimately not be very consistent. We don't seem to believe in defending. It's fun, but DV will be along shortly to explain that he'd rather win 1 0 in a 90 minute grind every week ;)

Can certainly see plenty of "entertainment".  Plenty of players showing real talent and at the same time vulnerability.  FBT solid thoughout but Kemp, on the other hand, a bit of a passenger.

I'm sorry, thats just naive bullshit - our performance that is.

They should be out of sight.  To say our defending has the solidity of Helium Gas would be an understatement.  It's not just the back three (but they are a problem), it's the big hole right in front of them and going man for man an every over the top ball against us.  We have three centre backs and you only ever see two of them back there.

Kinsella should take himself off for an early bath, that was a nasty foul.  Very luck to be on.

Going forward we look dangerous at times, but the quality is not quite there.  Young makes some good runs, finds good positions on the shoulder, but looks raw as fuck on the ball at times.

Kemp looks more Darcy than Payne right now - lots of flashes of quality, followed by a cross into the stand behind the goal, or falling over, or playing it into a defender.

There still looks like there is more to work with than last season, but Flynn is currently churning out the Gunning first 30 minutes against Gillingham with them right now.  That dog in defence and midfield is still obviously missing - almost in a literal sense, it's like we are a man short when defending.

On the bright side Young looks like he has something about him, prepared to put himself about a bit early doors and good in the right hand channel, but if he us going to do that it desperately needs at least 1 midfielder to be getting into the box otherwise it's Austin v. 2 at least.

Well according to Hockers we've had about a dozen "let offs" and FGR are clearly the better team. Absolute nonsense. Mahoney,Brewitt,Young and Hutton outstanding. Maalife decent,Austin looking dangerous. Unfortunately the midfield is awful.

We are not out of it, because we look threatening ourselves.  But they should have three or four goals more by now.

In a way I agree with both of you - we're a disaster at the back structurally but the individual players are playing okay on their own terms, if that makes sense. Going forward we're creating a lot of chances but nobody is getting on the end of many of them. Lots to like, lots to worry about.

Is this a joke?!

Enjoyed that half, there are more goals in this. We are still in it for sure although have had a few let offs and probably could have had a red for Kinsella (possibly should have).

We also had a great shot saved from Austin and hit the bar so not one way traffic. Next goal will be key.

Title: Re: FGR v Swindon Town Matchday Thread
Post by: RobertT on Tuesday, August 15, 2023, 19:44:04
I sort of mentioned this after the Crewe game as well - individual moments are making the back three look good, and the midfield absence is making us look weak in defence.  BUT, individually they are making not so obvious mistakes that are pulling the defensive unit apart.

Take their goal - four players are actually all at fault, just nobody by enough for it to be obvious -

Malife rushes towards the high ball, but is never going to win the ball, so he creates a gap in the middle behind him.  Brewitt doesn't see the gap or cover over despite not really marking anyone so Kinsella is the man marking Stevens.  Kinsella does very little to add pressure and allows a a player to turn and shoot with total control and Mahoney has a slightly poor position opening up the back post too easily (in his defence,  he has kept us in it as well).

It's small little moments like that - nothing horrible there, each next player up could have covered the error, but as a unit we are soft and pulled too easily apart.

FWIW I think Genesini has done quite well so far on his league debut but I would rather see a natural left footer at LWB rather than a right footer, he put a few good crosses in but will almost always cut inside to cross on his right.

I think Ďout of sightí is a bit harsh.

I donít think they have peppered our goal. Yes they had those 3 chances in the space of about 30 seconds but that was good (admittedly last ditch) defending / blocking & good saves from the keeper - which is what heís there to do.

Other than that I donít think FGR have been massively threatening.

Feels more like the next goal could go either way rather than FGR getting the next goal being inevitable

On another day we are down to 10 men and three or four of their chances are clear cut - not 50/50, good keeping has kept us in it.

Itís like the ball is magnetically going to Innis every time we cross it in.
Innis is exactly the type of defender we need.

Much better discipline in the second half, even before the sending off, but still not perfect - although you can accept some more of the risk taking when a man up.

We look very ropey with our final ball at times and Austin isn't quite firing, but much better at creating the opportunities for that final ball.

That was basically like one of the Gav Gunning/Mildenhall games from last season, all over the shop at times in the first half (in terms of shape), a little too gung ho leaving big gaps.  Bit more pragmatic until the sending off and then took the foot off the brakes again but had the joy of an extra man on the pitch.

Certainly more to work with than we had in May.  Still really missing those three or so players down the spine to make us a good team I think.

Good result, especially given how it could have gone.

Title: Re: FGR v Swindon Town Matchday Thread
Post by: Godd002 on Tuesday, August 15, 2023, 20:44:32
Good win but we need a striker that can score and create.  Austin look slow and spends too much time in his own half so not there for the breaks.

Title: Re: FGR v Swindon Town Matchday Thread
Post by: Ticker45 on Tuesday, August 15, 2023, 20:57:23
A game we could have lost and been down to ten men quite easily but pleased with the turn around and far more confident in our squad and the way we play compared to last season. Just need the injured players to get back as soon as possible plus another couple of bodies to strengthen the team and it could be a far more optimistic outlook than even three weeks ago.

An aside - three games in a row we've had 20 shots or more. Can't imagine that's happened often before.

Can only imagine Mad Gav got binned from the coaching team for being too conservative!

Flynn:
- Made hard work of it
- Started slowly.
- Moved ball to slow and played into their trap
- Started to get on top after 30 mins
- If more clinical we would have won Saturday and today comfortably
- Sending off made it easier
- They nearly caught us on the break as we were sloppy
- We have had just over 1000 passes and 20 shots again
- The finishing touch and end product has been wasteful
- We were shooting when bodies in the way or crossing when noone in the box
- There is work to do
- Delighted at his first win at STFC. Fans were awesome, as could see effort and determination
- Austin frustrated. Joked with Austin we had 21 shots and 11 off target. Flynn said that the 11 were Austins
- FBT has scored one or two of those. Unbelievable left foot
- Khan has bone bruising. Will be back for the weekend
- Genesini: Ward had back spasm. Thought Genesini would be better against their set up
- RHM may be back for Saturday
- Light on numbers tonight. Young bench
- They were tired becasue we nearly turned it into a basketball game again
- Tried to stop UGM from cutting inside and going forward at the end

Possession with a purpose. Something Lindsey and Morris claimed to understand but showed absolutely no understanding of in practice.

I think Austin will come good. He's been a bit off it and missed some sitters but been unlucky as well. His general play has been good but he does need to concentrate more on goalscoring and dropping deep less.

he did set up both goals today 😜

Yeah lovely little lay off for FBTs strike and a good save rebounded for Young.

He's having a positive influence minus the 3 sitters in two games.

Always re-assuring when you agree with everything the manger says. Gives me hope he will have us heading in the right direction.

Good win but loads to work on still - natural for new players and new ideas.

Three points on the board most importantly.

Thought Young was fantastic until he faded second half. Pace, held the ball up, showed trickery and movement, got in behind their defence a few times first half but little to aim for.

Mahoney brilliant in goal. Defenders all very good. UGW wayward with too many passes, maybe trying too hard tonight.

Hutton the better of the two wing backs with some lovely crosses. Genesini raw but did a few good things going forward.

Centre mids invisible first half, no control of the game, improved second, Kemp poor despite his goal.

Austin more good than bad for me. At one point he chased back into his own half in the left back position when it was 1-1 against 10 men. Great work ethic but doesn't need to be there. Had a hand in both goals and occupies defenders.

Overall scrappy but stuck to it and benefitted from a ref on our side tonight has to be said.

On to Wrexham where no result would surprise me - i have my doubts currently but am encouraged for the future under Flynn. Think we could be more than decent in a month or two. Hopefully Rush is back for the weekend to add a bit more to our attack, even if he starts off the bench.

Shite ground/shite fans. Just a very easy and convenient away game. First half really wasnít great, FGR passing it through us/around us for fun. Midfield technically is sound but itís crying out (lost count of the amount of times this has been said) for a horrible physical bastard to break play up and sit infront of back line. Lack of height in our team is gonna see alot more teams with big lump central halves cause issues for us in defence, but it is what it is. Mahoney kept us in it.

Second half much better. Came out with intent, drove forward, balls into box and goals followed. UGM looks to be a superb piece of business. Austin much sharper, missed a few yes but was far more involved in game. Brewitt won virtually everything, solid. Young lively also. Thunder cunt from FBT, great limbs in crowd. 3 points in bag, Roll on Wrexham

Brilliant result. First proper 'limbs' I've been involved in for a while after FBT's thunderbastard!

I thought we were pretty awful first half and that is down to a badly misfiring midfield. The three of them were really poor, with Kinsella the worst of the bunch. Felt he should have gone for his filthy tackle too. None of them seem to know what their job is. We are crying out for a destroyer/leader in the Grant mould. They were all so ponderous and the movement was non existent. I felt for the defenders looking for an out ball with those three in front of them. I actually thought Cain was much better and added a bit of zip, shifting the ball around quicker.  Kemp looks lightweight and I just don't get the hype about McEachran.

Brewitt was fantastic. He's proving the doubters wrong and looked pumped at the end. Pleased for him.

Genesini looks a find. So much better than Ward and Uwakwe on Saturday.

I thought that Young worked his socks off, and Charlie did everything right other than score, but he got two assists. It'll come.

Would have loved to have seen Rush out there tonight...

The ref was really good other than missing the red for Kinsella. I'm really enjoying this new no nonsense approach.

Overall, we are playing with more purpose and desire under Flynn than Morris or Lindsey ever showed.

If we can get the midfield functioning we will be in the mix.

Also hope that chap who was unwell at the end is okay.

It's a G o [ o ] d w i n but for the malife of me I can't help but think it's still papering over some very large cracks.

This result probably equalises the result v Crewe on Sat, so it is about right in terms of points.

Definitely needs to be some key and importantly correct activity in terms of recruitment over the next two weeks. Probably means some still leaving [like Hutton possibly] to get what Town need to get in. Then whoever does join probably needs about a month to fully gel with the rest.

There's good signs in patches and clear individual talent but also some shocking positioning at times as well. It'll be upto Flynn to make all that synchronise and bring it all together. I think we'll be looking at something like early October before we truly know if Town are well on their way to having polyfilla'd and sealed up the cracks or if they've grown to size of dessication cracks. Hopefully the former...and hopefully Austin gets his shooting boots back on properly cos at the moment he's a bit like season one Belly Paynter. Would be nice if he can discover some form close to that of season three Paynter [also season one Austin] and any talk of 'barn door' would soon disappear.

Plenty for Flynn to work on and develop. The tools are kind of/sort of there with some solid...and I mean solid additions through the core and things clicking, Town would look muchly decent in forming some kind of top ten to top six attack. That kind of ambition I suppose has to be matched by the board...we'll likely know that either way by two weeks time.

Great team performance.  Especially the second half.  Our rather thin bench meant that we lacked options and that tired or struggling players - and "senior" players like Austin - just had to soldier on.  That made the win all the more creditable but Forest Green being reduced to 10 men helped us, fitness-wise.

Still, we can all recall losing leads late on - inc. v. oppos reduced in numbers - so getting the win was an achievement and cautiously encouraging.

Another enjoyable game capped by the 3 points.

Honourable mentions for Mahoney, Genesini, Brewitt, Austin, Young & Hutton who combined well with UGM particularly in 2nd half.
Thought that Cain did ok when he came on, added some calm.
FBT not at his imperious best but it's a high bar.

I wonder if the new regulations are what saved Kinsella in that the ref wasn't immediately surrounded by an FGR posse.
Certainly looked like a red and the tackle did some damage as well.

Hopefully Khan & RHM are back for Saturday.

Exactly, and did it much quicker and more effectively than anyone else before. I thought he did a good job and Kinsella had been a liability.

Interesting to hear Flynn say the midfield didnít make angles for the defenders to pass outÖ Kinsellaís movement was non existent when we were in possession. I was watching him and he basically just stood next to an FGR player every time, effectively marking himself. Letís hope he improves because he was crap last night and the foul on their player was a disgrace.

We can count shots instead, which are a bit closer to goals! 21, 20 and 24 in three games this season (8, 6 and 9 on target, so let's not get too carried away...)

Nothing better to do with my morning so thought I'd work out how long it took us to take 65 shots under Jody Morris.

Newport A 6
Doncaster H 8
Sutton A 11
Salford A 3
Harrogate H 13
Orient A 8
Carlisle H 10
Walsall A 12

So eight games to get past 65.

I think what these first three games have shown us, as if we didn't know it, is that the Guardiola Disciples have no place in League Two. The tippy tappy shite that we have been served up is far less effective with players of this calibre than straightforward direct football. It doesn't have to be route one but if you get it into the box, you have a chance, either from a rare moment of quality or more likely a mistake from the opposition.

Looking forward to reading back this MDT given the ending!

I didn't really know what to make of the first half. We seemed a bit 'sluggish'. Nice finish by Stevens, I wonder if players are targeting that part of the goal against Mahoney after the 2 conceded on Saturday. To be fair he probably had no chance so I'm making something of nothing! :) The other talking point of course was the absolutely terrible tackle by Kinsella that should have seen him walk. You have to feel sorry for Taylor-Moore who has had injury issues before and saw his evening ended in horrible fashion.

Second half, the first thing I noticed was that Mahoney's first 2 goal kicks went banging down the pitch, I found this odd as Innis had pretty much won everything in the air, but it seemed to work and whilst the goalkeeper thwarted Charlie again, (a theme of last night unfortunately) there was Kemp to gleefully finish. Having someone like Kemp to be the fox in the box is going to be important for us this season I reckon. Then the referee took centre stage giving Bunker his marching orders after 2 fairly pathetic fouls. The second a ludicrous one to stop Tom Brewitt stepping out of defence. (I think it was) I imagine his manager wasn't happen at his decision making. And with that we took total control, flooding forward and totally pushing FGR back. I remembered back to the Gillingham game last season where we played against 10 and that was a pathetic, slow turgid effort. This was the total opposite, we were brave and fully deserved the 3 points when FBT's strike scorched into the net.

3 very welcome points. Yes, the referee had a part to play, but ignoring that after a pretty poor first half we stepped it up in the second and dominated. It's a thoroughly more enjoyable way we play which I think is going to make us see goals at either end more often than not. Once Charlie finds the back of the net he'll be flying. I'm still concerned by our left side and the midfield. Also when we play sides like Sutton, it's going to be interesting to see how our complete lack of height cope with it.

We shall have to see about Kinsella.  It seems that since Grant, we have looked for small players like him and Louis Reed to break up play in front of the central defenders.  Reed was always making angles and linking up but was no defender.  Kinsella needs to settle in a bit more.  He never came with a creative label but I can see him becoming a very useful defensive midfielder.  Regardless, we still need a more imposing central defensive midfielder who won't get knocked off the ball except when buying a foul and a bit of time.

Overall quite a wasteful, ornamental display from midfield last night. Nevertheless, Kemp was on hand to nod in and McEachran did beat Daniels if not the woodwork when so nearly equalising in the first half.  As also noted, Cain played the ideal switching role against the 10 men.

But instead of slow, tippy tappy (ok for Man City), we built up far more quickly down the flanks.  FBT and even more so, UGM, showed a carrying capacity to develop "inside out" play with Hutton and Genesini.  UGM, Hutton and Young were risky, yes but offensively they threatened Forest Green in both halves never giving them the chance to properly re-organise. Soon enough, cuter teams will prepare to counter UGM and FBT's predisposal to carry the ball forward but last night they were both great and worked a treat.

I disagree I think he needs to get higher crosses in as far too many are low and driven rather than with any purpose of finding a head, we play for low crosses most of the time.

It was nice to see Genesini cross higher for the first goal so giving Austin a chance of winning a header at the far post.

Hutton is definately quantity over quality with crosses though, so many times he got into a great crossing position only to cross low and it hit the 1st defender.

He is a major threat though but if he could cross consistantly he would be a hell of an attacking wingback/winger.

Title: Re: FGR v Swindon Town Matchday Thread
Post by: Nemo on Wednesday, August 16, 2023, 08:25:17
I think we think Hutton's crossing is worse than it is because we're a team of short players who often aren't in the box to be on the end of them. Chuck Jamille Matt and Armstrong from Harrogate up top and I imagine Hutton's crossing would look 10x better! There've been a lot of very sweetly hit crosses that just haven't had anyone attacking them.

Great match - if you were watching as a neutral!

Not sure what was going on in the first half, we started Ok but then the midfield just seemed to vanish neither supporting the attackers, challenging in midfield nor screening the defence, it honest felt like 11 v. 10 in FGR's favour in the first half as we seemed to be winning nothing and chasing our tails, defence were getting a lot of stick on here but not really sure what they were doing wrong regularly being left 2 on 2 or worse with others running at them, best shown when at one stage FGR had a 4 on 3 break and I was thinking 'if they can hold this for a couple of seconds midfielders will track back and appear' but literally no midfielders appeared in shot but thankfully FGR fucked it up.

Second half, not sure what Flynn changed, difficult to tell from a single camera but did he get Kinsella to actually screen the back 3 a bit (FWIW should have been red but in his defence don't think there was an ounce of malice in it, just on of those where he fucked up and lunged to try and get it back), generally we looked better and more cohesive.

As for players Mahoney did well (and possibly played the ball of the night if Kemp had been a bit quicker), cannot really fault the back 3, UGM possibly trying too hard and got away with a couple of fuck ups, FGT is pretty good and Brewitt just plays the no nonsense role, particularly needed when you have 2 of the back 3 quite keen to get forward, he seemed to relish the battle with Taylor and dragged Taylor into a physical battle where he seemed more interested in wrestling with Brewitt than playing football, he may have a rick in him, but if he didn't he wouldn't be playing in the 4th tier.

WB's did OK, Genesini did well, seemed to be getting pelters but again not really sure why, he seems desperate to curl one in, so perhaps when one goes in he may calm down a bit, Hutton did Ok.

Midfield all a bit meh, Kemp seemed to drift in and out of the game, ould be very visible for 10 minutes then vanish for 10, as for the other two *shrugs*.

Up front Austin presently cannot hit a cows arse with a banjo albeit that will no doubt come, what is frustrating with him is that much as with Kemp he seemed to play (again hard to tell with only a single camera) in fits and starts, would be everywhere for 10 then vanish for 10, for a period his main role seemed to be leading complains to the referee, Yong looks class and ran himself into the ground, his runs down the right channel could have yielded something time and time again if he had something other than a heavily marked Austin to aim for.

Oh and Cain did what he had to do when he came on.

So we are unbeaten in 3, above (the pre-season definitely going up) Wrexham and Stockport with a game in hand, but below the flying Crawley so all in all not so bad, not sure what people are expecting but the tone on SM doesn't seem to reflect that.

Is my view after first visit. My lads first away game.
- The hill is a killer to walk up, only to be rewarded when you get to the top by a Quorn food truck. Fuck off.
- Some of our fans are inconsiderate. My lad is tiny, and could hardly see unless at the front. Come on people, please show some compassion and let us squeeze in.
- Thought our fans were quite quiet all game. FGR did make some impressive noise.
- We need to move the ball quicker.
- No strength in depth.
- Dokes again superb. Passionate but often falling out with Hutts.
- We were risky at times playing one on one at the back.
- How are hot pants allowed to be worn by a footballer?
- Vegans are cunts. (Sorry Bennett).
- Austin still frustrates me. Need to show some passion and get the lads heads up when we were 1 nil down. We felt sorry for ourselves. He had a few good chances, where the old Charlie would have finished. He needs to be in the box more.
- I love Kemp.
- The Kinsella foul didn't look that bad. High leg yes, but no studs showing. Looked accidental to me.
- FBT is superb.
- We are a very small team.
- I think we need a Darren Bullock type player.
- Dissent will not be tolerated, on how the FGR player found out. Players need to learn to keep it shut.
- 3 points were most important.

Great evening out with the boy. He was not up for anymore away games, thinking that all grounds are vegan. Stupid boy.

Nice and easy trip, but weird part of the country.

FGR seem to think we were a nasty physical team - it's going to be a long season if they can't cope with the physicality of Town's mostly sub 6ft team, there's a lot nastier than us in this division!

Sippo, a Darren Bullock type player would get sent off every week!

He used to get sent off every week back then too! now he would be on a season long ban!

We need a slightly younger Anthony Grant.

Think Jake Young looks a real find, albeit only 2 games in. Has strength, pace and is a little raw. Does sometimes struggle to get the ball out from under his feet, but think he looks dangerous, and isnít someone who is afraid of taking a few players on. With RHM and Wakeling due to come back from injury, I wonder if heís done enough in the eyes of Flynn to stay as the second striker alongside Austin.

Not if we sign 3. We just missed that 'something' in midfield.

A lot has already been said, butÖ

Positives from 30 minutes onwards. Poor until then. Our midfield lacked composure and was also failing to shield the back 3. Khan would help with that but I still think we need another one in there. McEachran in particular seemed lost.

Genesini looked fine, considering heís out of position on the left. He had to cut back every time. If you saw him on the other side (which I hope we donít need to much, on the basis we keep
Hutton) I think youíd see him more advanced and willing to attack the full back. Better than Ward was on Saturday.

Innis for them is a man mountain. On the one hand, Iíd love a player like that. FBT couldnít get close to him at corners and got lucky in the first half not being pulled up for shirt pulling at corners. Innis dwarfed him. ButÖ the way we play, the centre backs have to be able to play, and Brewitt really can. If you put a big lump who was average on the ball at the back, weíd be exposed to any side that pressed high up the pitch, which most will nowadays.

Hutton saw so much of the ball - in particular when they were down to ten, but crosses were mainly floated, and dealt with relatively easily. If we are to make the most of him, we need to have players attacking from deep (midfield runners), as Austin and Young were at a standing start for most of those crosses. Alternatively, you put some pace in there (RHM) so that he can fizz them across.

The new yellow card rule (for tackling) is ridiculous, but both of those were valid (albeit slightly soft). Fully in support the new rules for chat back to the ref though. I think that part is working already.

Great winner. Deserved on balance.

The sending off was for a second yellow. The guy was booked in the first half.

Re Kinsella, Walsall fans said not to expect much from him outside of being a pure defensive midfielder. His positioning and reading of the game in that position were praised but they said whenever he was looking to do anything outside of that comfort zone, he wasn't particularly good at it.

That was fairly evident last night and I thought Cain was a lot more useful when he came on. Not particularly doing anything fancy, but keeping the ball moving quickly and neatly.

Jesus Christ the FGR fans like a moan, even more than our fans and thats saying something.

Almost zero credit to us for winnings and only complaining about how Kinsella should be banned for 6 games and that the ref was so one sided in our way and we could have finished with 7 men and that we were constantly wrestling their players to the deck.

A few moaning about how our fans got in the home end and causing issues.

I am so glad we beat the moaning vegan fuckers.

Having watched the Kinsella challenge at half speed on this clip, Iím starting to think the ref actually got it right. 4m37s onwards.
