Title: New Kit?
Post by: Sippo on Tuesday, May 10, 2022, 07:07:37
Did I dream this, or in the past have clubs worn their new kits for the playoff finals?

Are we getting a new one for next season? My lad was gutted he couldn't get one this season.

Teams have done in the past.

In fact up till about 20 years ago a lot of teams (ourselves included) would wear next years home kit on the last game of the season.

Dunno how factually accurate the story is but we wore next season kit on the last day of the 2002-03 season (home to Luton I think) and the players were told not to give their kit away because we couldn’t afford it and any kit they didn’t return would come out their wages. Miglioranzi ended up in his pants!

Yeah, I do remember us wearing our new kit last game of the season before. Around the time we used to vote on designs, Strikeforce?

If we get to the play off final I just hope we wear red if given the option and not dick about with the kits like we did vs Millwall.

Yeah, think we went from DGI 02/03 to Strikeforce 03/04.

If we get past Vale, what kit we wear depends on who goes through and who is the home. If it’s Northampton on both accounts we won’t be in Red you’d have thought.

If it’s Mansfield, no excuse

I'm kinda peeved I couldn't get a home shirt for this year, let alone next year's kit. Hopefully they offer some at some point, but I don't see that being likely.

I think I read somewhere that the promotional pics for next seasons kit have been done already. Could be quite a money spinner of we get to the final and they can get it on sale prior to that?

They have as said by Berniman, and it includes a 3rd kit too which could be of interest historically to Town fans :)

On the train from Birmingham to the Bescot (which was bedlam!) there was a guy wearing that green potato print shirt, but the Burmah sponsor had worn off so the sponsor was only faintly visible. It looked magnificent.

Yeah, it's definitely been done, the home kit is due to be announced in the next few weeks, so It could be worn in the last game I guess, depending on where it is, they might make the most of the play off scenario for PR now that they are there - would probably be a case of whether they could get enough kit in time.

What I have heard, the home kit is pretty much as you would expect (i don't know of course, but I wouldn't expect a bespoke kit as last years was) the away kit is not Yellow or Blue but is a design that the younger fan is likely to like and get excited about.  The 3rd kit is one for the old school fans, touches on STFC History and has a Wow factor about it. Make of that what you will..

Was on the same train I think (the 1 45ish)?. Was unreal but never been so hot on a train before, packed in like sardines.

'Seaside Red' makes the potato print bucket hats also, they look class.

Pure guesswork but if we are announcing a third kit from the off isn’t that likely to make our away kit white…

Of course it could be the club thinking they’ll sell more shirts with three designs even if the 3rd isn’t needed during the season - they’d be right as well.

It’s not an anniversary year or anything is it?

It is the 30th anniversary of the green kit though....

I think with debarcle of last years kit availability they are probably trying to tick as many boxes as possible with regards to demographic of people want what type of shirt - i get the feeling that there is a demand for the the kit next year because lots of people (including myself) missed out on last years kit. If we end up with a succesful season this year that demand will only increase.

I suspect that we will see the new home kit announced either before the final game of this season or a couple of weeks after, depending on whether it is available for an outing this season.  Then the away kit announced maybe 2 or 3 weeks before the new season and the 3rd kit announced in Oct/Nov in the run up to Xmas.  Just my guess.

In ‘93, we wore the Loki kit for the first time at Wembley, so the tradition goes back a long way. Spurs had done it two years before then, wearing their new kit when Gazza scythed through Gary Charles. It may have continued, but my childhood brain was much better at picking up those details.

Those shirts (without Burmah) once existed… in the pre season game v Real Socieded game we either hadn’t secured Burmah, or hadn’t printed them up. There is a team photo like it too. I’ve got a green potato print shirt, but a sponsor less one would be quite a find!

That was the season after. I had the second one as a kid but not the one before. Thankfully have both now on eBay finds. Mizuno made some good kits but some of their materials were hit and miss. The first season ones were better material minus the round neck colar on the home version that itched like a motherfucker. Mark Walkers used to cut his own collar open to deal with it.

Add to the list of teams I didn't realise we'd played. Last time we had something like this at home must have been Sporting de Gijón, who I remember had one fan in the Arkells shouting in Spanish. Was originally supposed to be Espanyol.

Seem to be a fair few clubs in the lower leagues going down the charity line for the PR, I cannot imagine (cruising) shirt sponsorship at our level makes the club an enormous amount anyway?

In the past the league 2 average was estimated at just about scraping into 6 figures. I think that was a good few years ago, so it could have gone in either direction since. I wouldn't expect it to have soared though as advertising and promotion budgets seem to have been a bit stagnant of late as a result of the declining print media sales and traditional tv viewing both declining and being spread over multiple channels.

I'm 90% sure all the work with the air ambulance was 100% charitable, although I could be wrong, who knows with the various weird financing decisions made during that time period, but I seem to remember a couple of incidents of the air ambulance coming to (non Swindon) games played at the CG during the off season which possibly spurred it on?

I'd want Adidas back personally. Liked that era of kits and the three stripes down the arms.

Seems like we're stuck with Puma for a while anyway.

When is this all going to start to be teased and released then? Fans need a pick me up and a bit of positivity.

As much as I was against the yellow and not just for obvious reasons, it ended up serving us well. Be glad to retire it now though.

The Club Shop said release will be late June/July when I went in yesterday. That said I am sure we will be shown a peek prior, hopefully soon.

The kits this year looked good, but, like any right thinking person I'd love Hummel.

They did a brilliant job on Rangers kits. A lot of Rangers fans wish they could go back to that because as nice as the Castore stuff is, they take the fucking piss on their prices and release about 7 kits a season.

So long as it doesn't have the diamond badge. Diamonds and STFC don't go well. That 93 kit with the original crest though would be good. Maybe a nod of intent as to the vision of the club - good PR in getting shirt sales again if so.

Maybe not a limited run this time too?  :hmmm:

Well we got to the top flight and played our only season there with the diamond.  I'd say we got on pretty well.  That 92/93 team was a thing of beauty.

The 1993 shirt?

I think you would be hard pressed to match the 93/94 because it means a lot to a lot, so comparing it to that, and the fact that it is Puma, probably disappointment follows :D

Personally I would love to see a modern version of the Ossie GWRFM 1990 shirts.  I think the white away kit is probably my favourite ever Swindon shirt, and the red version would be a fitting tribute to Alan Mac and his Wembley (deflected) goal.

I'm always interested to what away colours we've plumped for. I stopped buying the kits about 8 years ago, they got ridiculously expensive, feel really sorry for those with kids who 'demand' the kits every year even more so when money is tighter than ever.

Kit releases and fixtures announcements are always 2 times that fans can have a little bit of 'excitment' in what is a boring part of the football calendar.

Didn’t lose it per se. It surprisingly turned up 6 months late.

Someone did, however, totally lose the shirt I won in a Town raffle - signed by Broadbent iirc. Tracked it all over the world. Got to Athens, then diverted to South Africa before its final appearance in Oz.

The bespoke kit didn't cost anymore, as I understand it (I mean Power was the one who ordered it). The issues were that there was a minimum amount of kits required for a reorder and that they took longer.

Lets hope they order significantly more this time around.

I think that was alluded to in one of the Loathed Strangers pods with that Jonah fella. He was saying that the kits used in a pre-season game were also used in the Port Vale game with just the names and numbers printed over them. (I think that's right)

Not disagreeing you as I have no evidence to suggest otherwise, but that amazes me considering that someone at Puma must have spent time designing it and there would be no economies of scale in its production compared with just slapping some badges on a template kit.

Wasn't it suggested on here by some ITK type  ;) that Power deliberately went bespoke as by then he knew he wouldn't be the one paying for it.

not sure I see the link between old and new except colours!

each to their own. it's not exactly a biggie

glad this is out the way so we can unveil the manager tomorrow

Would have preferred green and white trim but it's a nice enough shirt. Have a feeling it'll look better in person. Away is a bit training top for me.

And pretty sure kits are decided months in advance so the Port Vale comparison unavoidable unfortunately.

Post by: Berniman on Wednesday, June 15, 2022, 17:04:52
Yeah I'm surprised by that as well.

It's also the worst away colour to have with all the red and white clashes.

The kit is chosen half way through the season, way ahead of any agro with Port Vale

I like the home more than the away shirt which may have looked better in v neck and slightly smaller logos! Hardly incredible as stated not bad but preferred last seasons.

Like the pattern on the home shirt but the actual style and black trim just make it look like a training shirt, don’t get the black at all to be honest.

Away shirt is fair enough but just a template that’s the same colour as an old shirt.

With the black trim on the shirt, I wonder what they'll do with the shorts... Will they'll go with black shorts? (I know we went with that in the early 70's...maybe that's the 'past woven into the present' reference...can't see any other connection)... red shorts with black trim perhaps? Prefer white shorts but wouldn't look right with that shirt...

I think I hate modern marketing.

Our fans like a moan enough without doing something as asinine as promoting a v neck black trim shirt as being a throwback to our prem shirt. Swirls or no swirls.

I get you want to build hype for sales, but setting peoples expectations somewhere you're very obviously not going to meet is the opposite of good marketing.

This.

Considering the hype it was getting - for me they haven’t delivered what I was expecting. Which you could argue is my own fault.

Would have liked to have seen a collar and I don’t understand the black trim at all. Wouldn’t white and / or green trim have made more sense? Or even gold as that is at least on the club badge.

Never been a fan of white away kits purely because to me they’ve always been a way to guarantee we need a third kit although everyone has a third kit now a days regardless.

On first thought I much prefer last seasons kit.

Wonder when the alleged green third shirt will be announced

They'll probably ideally prefer to hold off on the third kit until nearer Christmas, maybe about October time.

If we end up playing a team in red and white away before then though, they won't have a choice but to reveal it.

I agree but it works. Look in the replies and most people like it. I like the away kit but not so much the home kit but they are just doing what every club do now. Fair play to them, nice to see them pushing stuff. Had a peek at the club shop tonight and looks really good, they have done a great job in 2 weeks

Neither kit is for me. Given the “hype” around the links to the past, I feel they’ve slightly over-sold and under delivered. Good to see the media folks putting in the effort though.

The pattern is a lot more prominent in the flesh and it does make you think of 93/94. Its just the black trim that draws you away from that, but I love it.

Judging from this thread and a few people on Twatter, a note for the advisory board should be stop getting people excited about stuff!

My point is more that Chalky wants them to do it all a little bit low key as he got his hopes up. It's selling out quickly and the shop is packed at 12pm on a Thursday, the club shouldn't not do these things because a minority of people don't like it, that was more my point.

I understood the marketing to be that the print was the way we were going, not sure Burmah and the Diamond badge was ever on the cards was it

The white kit is surely just a play on the colours?

I can see both points. At no point did the club say they were making an exact replica and you’d have been foolish to think they would. No chance we’d be using sponsors from nearly 30 years ago. Makes no sense.

I expected the shirt to have a take on the pattern (as it has done) but would have loved a collar (personal preference) even without a collar it looks ok but not a fan of the black has it isn’t really our colour. If the collar and sleeve trim was white instead of black and red line in middle was green - that would significantly improve it.

Having said i order me and the boy one at 12:00.
Fallen hopeless back into addiction with this club. Cant wait for them to let me down with a shit season or worse yet a great season with a sour ending. Hate STFC…

I think you're well aware that was never the expectations, no need to be facetious. Promoting the Premier League kit (red, white, little bit of a green with a collar) to release a v neck black trim kit is fucking stupid and baffled most people who saw the marketing campaign.

It doesn't mean people won't buy the kit, its a nice kit. Its just dumb and confusing to make that your marketing strategy when you're setting peoples expectations somewhere totally different.

Glad to hear it's selling well, on closer inspection I quite like the fabric effect. Not so keen on the black trim, ("It's Swindon Town", we're red and white), but it'll probably grow on me because at the end of the day black trim on a shirt is not a fucking world ending problem.

I've always looked at that train in the badge as a stylised icon representing all the locos (whether they be lowly tanks or high end express) that used to be built at the works, so an amalgam of the two is perhaps appropriate. That, or the person who designed it couldn't tell a 9F from an A4.

Got one today with the boy. He’s 8 and fits a 9-10 years. Used his own money but was £35. Bit steep in my opinion considering he will also want next years.

Clem was there at 3.30ish. The boy didn’t want a photo…

Not 100% they have ordered enough after what they've said.

There doesn’t even appear to be an option for a kids away shirt. Just adult (sold out except for Sumo size) and mini kits for up to 4 year olds. I wonder if this could again be linked to them being limited in terms of what they can order on credit, which I think the Advisory Board minutes said was the issue last year. Shame if that’s the case. We’re missing out on £££.

Thought it was something they highlighted last season as they was going to improve, I see many posts about fans getting no response to emails or orders, clearly still something they need to sort out - and maybe the ordering system isn't doing what it should be sending emails as it is probably automated.

To be fair to the club, the update posted yesterday(?) suggested the delay has been caused by the supplier. Perhaps they expected to have 2-3 times the initial levels of stock for launch day and didn't get it.

Or they could just be blame shifting, but that would be pretty unprofessional and I wouldn't be best pleased as the supplier if that was the case.

Right then.
I have received the kids strips and they have all come up quite good size wise.
Has anyone had any issues with the sizes?
Last year I had the black kit and I usually wear  L or XL shirts and polo shirts. The black strip was 2XL and came up a little short. Do these sit about the same or are they a bit more generous? I don't really want to order a 3XL and it hang like a sack of potatoes.
Any help appreciated

If anyone is waiting on an order to collect from the club shop, I had placed two orders.
I didn't get an order confirmation email, nor any confirmation they were ready.
I was passing lunch time and popped in on the off chance, and both orders were ready, and had been for a while, apparently.

If you're waiting confirmation of a collection, just pop in if you can, your order is probably ready.

One of my friends got this year's home kit delivered with no sponsor applied thanks to a manufacturer screw up. He didn't like it and got it swapped, said it looked like a training kit!

I generally like that we're trying stuff in kit designs and being a bit more out there. Personally I think this particular design looks awful, way too much going on and like a packet of cheese and onion Squares, but I'm glad they're trying these things and hopefully I'll like the next one.

I don't give a shit about kits, I never buy one anyway, but I am not a fan of that one, some kits look better than others, that one just doesn't appeal to me.

Can anyone remind me when the Puma deal runs out? Feels like we're due a change.

A lot of lower league clubs have top named brands now but I've heard they don't make as much per kit. Might be worth exploring going to someone a bit more niche. Strikeforce were always good, are they still a thing?

I know Mizuno are still about but tend to stick to Japan.

Still believe we have 2 more seasons of the deal left with Puma. If we do go to another supplier I would imagine it might be someone like Hummel as they are looking to capture more of the EFL clubs kit agreements and offering good deals for clubs.
