Title: Swindon v Rochdale pre match chat and matchday thread
Post by: 4D on Tuesday, October 12, 2021, 15:00:44
Looking forward to this for various reasons, one is for the life of me I can't remember if I've ever seen Town v Rochdale. If so one of the few I haven't seen.
This is surely a home win banker? We're doing well away, just need that to rub off at home.

I'll go 2-1 Town. Att: 8,822 (184 away)

On the train for this one and a few beers with 4 non Swindon fans.
They will be blown away by Garnerball.
Looking forward to it as always.

I can never forgive Rochdale and the fat wanker striker Steve Johnson for ending Jimmy Allans great career by basically flattening him from a corner and shattering his left arm way back in 1983.

One of THE worst challenges I have ever seen in person, poor Jimmy can barely move his arm even now.

While I had been to games before that one, it's the first game I remember watching sat in the wooden seats in the Shrivy Rd stand.

Remember it well in front of the TE.
He was in some pain.

It was mate, right in front of me stood in the Town End that day, horrific. Johnson was always a massive thug of a player.

Rochdale are currently in a run of 5 losses in a row (in all comps) and 7 games since their last win they have failed to score in the last 4 games. They sit in 18th place with 3 wins and 5 defeats in their first 11 league games, scoring 12 goals and conceding 14 so far.

No player has scored more than 2 goals so far this term for them.

Its well documented the problems at the club currently with takeovers coming and going and nothing happening so far on that front, but luckily they dodged a bullet with the last ownership battle with a certain Curran.

Several of their fans saying they won't put another penny into their club with the new owner in charge! understandable with it being the man who almost bankrupted Charlton and who took illegal payments for players he was an agent for while owning Charlton and much more shit! And we thought we had it bad with Power!

On the pitch Rochdale have only once ever won a game at Swindon in 2014 and only once got a draw back in 2011 with Swindon winning the other 9 meetings between the teams at the CG scoring 26 times and conceding 10, a win ratio of over 80%.

Swindon to suffer a single goal defeat in front of 9,145 fans with 76 Dale fans there.

We really need to improve our home form and this seems like the perfect opportunity to start doing it. It feels like we'll go full Swindon and lose doesn't it? I imagine Rochdale will sit back and frustrate us so hopefully we can continue on from the past few games.

3 of their last 4 defeats ended in 1-0 defeats the other at Bradford finished a 2-0 defeat they don't concede many, only Harrogate have scored 3 goals against them in the league and that was on the opening day of the season.

They have been playing with 5 at the back and 2 defensive midfielders sat in front of that defence, they will be very hard to break down.

Slightly different to us when many of our fans (quite rightly) weren't going to put another penny into the club until the old owner had gone! Won't be an easy game

We've had 3 really good performances /results away from home including one where we played the league leaders off the park. So it looks like we could be at the start of a really decent run of form. We have a really exciting player in McKirdy, the likes of whom we have never seen before and who looks about ready to catch fire.

We're playing a team who have lost 5 on the bounce, can't buy a goal and are in turmoil off the pitch.

All the ingredients then for a ball achingly, mind bogglingly frustrating 0-1 home defeat🤦‍♂️

But that's not my prediction. I've never predicted a defeat and never will...

3-0 JML, Simpson, McKirdy.... and we will lead at half time for the first time this season.

I just sat through the last 6 games highlights of Rochdals matches and they do try to pass the ball, they pack out the defence with 5 defenders and defensive minded midfielders but didn't look like they were overly quick on the counter.

They though look very susceptible to any players running at their centre backs who look quite clumsy and slow.

Much like us they play a possession based football with a lot of short passes between defenders and midfield and rarely let more than 1 goal in almost every game except for Burnley who took them apart 4-1.

Here are their stats from the last 6 games, a run of DLLLL

Mansfield away drew 1-1
59% possession
11 shots
3 ot
429 passes
73% accuracy

Burnley away EFL lost 1-4
47% possession
7 shots
2 ot
425 passes

Oldham home lost 0-1
68% possession
8 shots
2 ot
510 passes
79% accuracy

Bradford home lost 0-2
58% possession
15 shots
1 ot
477 passes
75% accuracy

Port Vale PJT away lost 0-1
45% possession
11 shots
1 ot
408 passes
74% accuracy

Crawley home lost 0-1
52% possession
12 shots
3 ot
429 passes
68% accuracy

By comparison here are Swindon stats for the last 6 games LDDWWW.

Port Vale home lost 1-2

Scratch my 10-0 prediction, I’m back home but still cannot go but I think it is likely IMHO to be 2-0 minimum or put it another way I don’t think the ‘Roaches’ 😁 will score today so I predict a win with a min of two goals. I also think we’ll get a positive result in Tuesday away at Sutton.

For me Baudry on the bench, he has filled in well at CB several times and Baudry just isn't up to it any more, or East.

Nobody is calling for him to come into the team just at least be an option on the bench .

I see that we are unchanged from last week - Those who were away (apart from Grant) make up part of the bench.

I think that is the right call to be honest. If some (not all) had come in at the expense of a winning team, it would have sent the wrong message.

Keeping faith with those who performed well last week sends the message that you are only as good as your last game and there is competition for places.

Couple of comments from their forum:

Swindon are going in fast in furious on the press, trying to boss the game, and It's working for them. Were give the ball away under pressure. Unfortunately, our defence clearances aren't picking out our men, they are just hoofed up the pitch.

1-0 Swindon. Very good goal and has been coming. Swindon easily the better team although without really testing our keeper until the goal. 66% possession to them so far and no shots on target for us

Not sure how many long kicks from Ward found their intended target but it wasn't many.

Williams for Iandolo (I know it wont happen though) and KKH for Hunt who Garner obviously doesnt rate much.

Thought we got away with one there.  The second half was a shambles from Conroy, Crichlow and Iandolo (bar one great saving tackle) and Garner.

Conroy played the entire second half like a player nursing an injury or trying to show everyone he was playing through one.  Whichever way, a Manager with a bit of ruthlessness should have pulled him off when he sat on the floor nursing his ankle.  He'd already been strolling/limping around and he kept that going for the remainder of the game.

Crichlow seemed to let the last game or two go to his head and the easy first half combined with that over confident thinking to create a second half performance of mistake after mistake.

Iandolo - that tackle was game saving as it turned out, so he is almost absolved.  But he was useless.  I'm not sure what has happened to him because he has never been good at defending but always had a good cross in him.  That has vanished, his final ball has been atrocious.  On the plus side, he chickened responsibility twice which led to Gladwin putting in the cross we scored from.

Garner - didn't change that backline when it needed it.  McKirdy was still creating.  His decision making seemed like it was born from a prescription of what we were going to do as opposed to being able to identify the issues and fix/change things.

First half I thought we looked quite good, so it was as if we felt we could just see it out.

At the end of the day we got a point, you take it, brush yourselves down and realise that when we play to our best we are better than most.  As they say, this one probably needs us to be goldfish, just forget it (apart from Garner, remember it and learn).

Unfortunately pre game I was speaking to a couple of fellow TEFers and suggested exactly that would happen.

When we’re on song, we’re irresistible. Certainly away. When we’re not it would seem that not enough players turn up for the full 90 minutes. Which seems to be at home. On a positive note we didn’t lose and as long as we keep in touch with the top three and as has been mentioned we have the January window to look forward to. On top of that we have an FA Cup run and we could end up making some decent money to add to the + 8000 home attendances. Today we should have bagged a minimum of £10k in the till along with the £10k from last weeks televised win at the vegans.

Harsh to be to critical with where we are now considering..

Garner:
- Two points dropped
- First half good. Should have had second goal
- Blatant penalty missed in the first half. Iandolo was fouled
- Second half let them back into the game
- Two goals avoidable. Both mistakes
- Massive response in last 15 mins
- Need to be winning these games
- Keep working at it
- Players gave everything
- Invited them back into it. They engaged further forward.
- We played into their press and not beyond it.
- Poor defending from set pieces in 2nd half
- Positive is the response anddetermination
- Scored 2 great goals today
- 19 shots and numerous final third entries
- KKH has really good spring for the header back across
- Players overconfident at half time? No. They just adjusted
- We weren't casual but just too slow at times
- Learning curve. But keeps momentum.
- Thought we deserved to win. But at least we got something from it
- Players from FGR and Plymouth game deserved to play.
- Move into 2 games next week and we will use the squad.
- Slight worry about home form? No, because we should have had 6 points from last 2 games based on performance.
- We have been good defensively, but today shot ourselves in the foot giving 2 goals away
- Sutton are physical. They are doing well. We are preparing full detail and come up with a way to win
- Aguilar will train with us and get 5 games over the next 28 days at a higher level t han he has played before

Grant might have to play in defence, Conroy's injury and staying on was instrumental in the poor second half defensive display.

£10 grand today? Jeez, you’re way out with that. Say, half the crowd were STs that still leaves 4,500 @ £20 odd.

Hang on, 8000 is the break even figure and that includes ST. So 9000 is an additional 1000 give or take at a minimum of £10. Obviously if it is £20 then that’s £17000.

2 points dropped. I mean we didn't deserve to win based on second half, but Rochdale were poor.

as much as Garner got it right the last few games he fit the subs wrong for me.

however credit for salvaging a point

I reckon Wollacott comes back in Tuesday as Ward’s poor kicking second half seemed start off all the sloppiness at the back. Also second half showed there’s still a big need for Grant to in the squad.

By all means declare wollacott #1, but the sloppiness was nothing to do with ward

Disagree. His kicking second half was shocking and was a contributing factor in constantly surrendering possession and the sloppiness.

He just seemed to lose all composure kicking, even kicking it out of his hands he started slicing it which is a bit bizarre as that’s bread and butter.

Going back to Rob Tuck’s post, Iandolo needs to get his end product back sharpish, a player having as much space as he did all game and not putting in any kind of decent balls is unforgivable.

Simpson has done OK and has enough about him to work on.  He has scored a few, should have had some more and can be a handful when defenders get too tight to him.  He has no desire whatsoever to head the ball though.

JoJo and KKH to start. Also, JML might be a surprise start in place of Simpson, with pace against physical defenders.  Is Conroy going to carry a knock?  If so Grant on the bench.  Williams might be in for McKirdy, with McKirdy to come on after an hour.  Part of the plan must be to be unpredictable to negate scouting reports.

To be fair, a clear change of plan from Rochdale today to press us higher second half - worked a treat. I don't see why more teams don't do it. We can't really ever hit long so just suffocate us in our own defensive third.

Draw at home, win away. That would still work.

Maybe a couple of changes for Tuesday?
JJW should have gotten over the fatigue and as the no 1 should start.
I suspect that KKH at his best is better in the RWB role than Hunt at his best.
Tough on both Ward & Hunt as they both have enough credits in the bank to start against Sutton.

Williams is an interesting one.
On paper, at 28 should be at his peak and playing every week at this level.
Just wondering how many of his 190 odd career appearances have been from the bench?
Hopefully the injuries haven't taken their toll.
For the moment I'd have him as first change if we are chasing the game.
I'm sure he'll get a run if he stays fit and others start to pick up injuries or lose form.

Intrigued also by the LWB role being the first one mentioned whenever a TEF team tinker is mooted.
To my albeit relatively untrained eye Iandolo looks to be the best option we have in that role and doesn't appear to have done anything majorly wrong when playing there.
If we revert back to a 4 then the debate does change.
If a specialist LWB is recruited in Jan then all well & good, but on current form he deserves his place.

Would have been interesting to see Dominic Thompson in this side.
Think he was on the bench for Brentford last night, no idea if he’s had any game time in the Prem this season.

Vs Ipswich Dom Thompson is exactly what this team could do with - if we’re going to stick with wing backs.

It’s obvious that the home form is unlikely to improve without changing something. I don’t expect Garner to deviate from the style so there appears no logical reason to expect anything different at home. We’ll win the occasional game but our inability to put away some very poor sides is going to affect where we finish.

Apart from Vale the other teams have been poor. God knows what happens when we play the decent sides at home.

I actually think playing the decent sides will help us, at various points yesterday Rochdale had all 10 men behind the ball. The chances are the better sides wouldn’t be as defensive therefore easier to break down.

He is a 19 year old lad learning his trade, we have been moaning all season that we play shitty tippy tappy football and now we are moaning that all of a sudden he can't jump.

Harry McKirdy missed an absolute sitter yesterday and had about 5 shots from distance that were poor, Read and Payne both cleared the town end from goalscoring opportunities but fans want to moan about a 19 year being bullied by defenders far more experienced than him.

Yesterday much more experienced players were to blame, Conroy Illandalo McKirdy and Payne and Simpson were really poor for me and much more responsible for the draw than Simpson was

There is a reason over the last few years our players prefer playing away and think it's time the fans starting looking at ourselves in this, so fucking negative

The atmosphere is shit because we’ve been poor at home all season, even first half yesterday was more erratic than ‘good’. The style we play just doesn’t get the crowd involved at home as we don’t build a head of steam or sustained periods of pressure on the oppositions goal. It was noticeable when we went for it at the end of the second half the atmosphere really picked up, it’s another reason to tweak things at home.

The chap behind me moans about most players every week, I can’t stand him and I have to bite my lip.

Yesterday he wanted to sub Gladwin after ten minutes, then wanted to sub Hunt and Payne, then Conroy and finally it was Odimayo.
He’d have used 5 subs if he had his way.

Then he was saying this is why Conroy doesn’t usually play? This is a season ticket holder. We do have some characters as fans.

So the intricate passing from left to right and back again in the build up to move a packed defence about followed  by Iandolo and Gladwin to change the angle, a cross to the back post where KKH had overloaded, exactly what he was bought on to do i suspect, had nothing to do with it.

Hardly a hopefull punt in to the box. Still just another view

We had over 9,000 fans yesterday and that was for a team that has only managed a single home win so far. If you are right? Over sensitive players should look around at other teams that play before 2,000 to 6,000. Tough life being a football player. The atmosphere, like the game was spasmodic, some good some bad. Any player that can't handle criticism and adulation in equal measure, probably isn't in the right job.
As I said earlier, this season is shaping up for a good away side but a poor home side. This is ok, we will survive the season and still be a 4th division team next year and that was perfectly acceptable a few months ago.
What this will do is affect the attendance, then the honeymoon period is over and a lot of goodwill, lost

Or Garner will tweak things in the January window and we will kick on!

Simpson is inconsistent. He’s young & raw. He’s had good games and bad games - for the most part - that’s what people on here seem to be saying in regards to Simpson.

Iandolo seems more a scapegoat to me.

My only concern with Simpson is he seems to not want to jump to challenge for headers, which is a shame as he’s a big unit and I think he needs more confidence to use his strength. Definitely a works in progress and one for the future.
He has strong upper body strength. Probably not conducive to vertical take off!

Just out of interest, have we scored any headed goals this season.

What he means is.

Match
Date
Teams
Time of goal
Passes
Assists
Which end the goal was scores
Attendance
Names and addresses of attendees
How much the gate receipts were
% split cash v card

Otherwise it could get confusing 🤣🤣🤣🤣

What are you dribbling on about?  If we keep up the current form we will be in the play offs.  There are no doubt areas we can improve on but we are 6th and won 3 and drawn 1 in our last 4 games scoring 10 and conceding 4.

Hardly survival form

not at all.

just pointing out he was poor yesterday and isn't a target man for a keeper to go long to.

if that makes him a scapegoat then .. well it doesn't.
There are plenty of others making him one, my comment was a generic comment not aimed at anyone individual

sorry, I had said the things you highlighted!

I reckon he could be quite some player in 4 or 5 seasons. I'm not sure he's ever going to be prolific, but there are plenty of good forwards who aren't.

I do think Garner dropped a bollock with 1 too many midfielders and one too few strikers though.

But given we are 6th, it could be worse :)

Simpson should have a useful footballing career at championship level (or higher).

It's a strange form of amnesia that plagues some of our fans

I do like Iandolo but imagine Donohue getting into the same positions and whipping in decent crosses

Yesterday was a bit mixed - we controlled the first half and should have been more than 1-0 ahead.
Rochdale changed their system at half time - pressed higher and we didn’t deal with it. I heard Garner’s post match interview on the car radio afterwards and thought he was spot on.
Both goals conceded were poor play - Critchlow gave the ball away and we were slow to recover for the first, Payne and 2 or 3 others watched the score shot on the second goal instead of challenging him / blocking the shot.
It’s good we built pressure and scored a late equaliser- a well worked build up, and could have won with late pressure.
Williams coming on brought some additional drive - I would have brought him or Gilbert on for McKirdy (rather than JML) - and his pace has a big impact late in the game. If McKirdy had scored as he should have when through one on one (Simpson was slaughtered on here for missing a one on one a few games ago) we would have won the game.
I agree with those who thought Ward was less comfortable kicking than Woolacott, which is important the way we play.
Talk about home form being poor in my view isn’t accurate -  we could and should have beaten Rochdale, Colchester and Tranmere on the balance of play / chances. The results haven’t matched performances in my view.
We have a young side with some good players and we need to get behind them and Garner, not be constantly on their backs.

PS I’d take a draw on Tuesday at Sutton, as they are going well at the moment.

As I think Rob mentioned earlier, my memory of Iandolo earlier in his time here was that he could whip a really good cross in.

not sure what's happened. me and forgetfulness, it him and his cross quality degrading

Its quite a big statement based on not a lot at the moment. he could equally be playing conference.

As with most in the league he comes across hot and cold, cold is sometimes a handful of touches. Definitely not seen enough of his shooting ability yet to see if he will make it as a consistent goalscorer. Age is definitely on his side and will be interesting to keep an eye on. I wrote off Adebayo quick enough so based on that he will probably make it!

Havent read back.

Would of been a travesty if we had lost that!

as usual i was in the TE but could still see that the goals conceded were terrible. Stand and watch.

Great equaliser and i asked the keeper how his leg was soon after.

I have faith that Simpson will get much better than where he currently is, hes only had about a dozen 1st team games so far and has shown loads of promise, I wish he was ours and not Ipswich's player.

He is a typical 19 year old, 1 good game often followed by 1 poor game, that doesnt make him a bad player it means that sometimes he just isn't consistant enough.

He does need to learn to jump though as often he seems to time his jumps so that he is way off where he should be, that will come with time and good coaching.

He often as well leads with his arms and you can't do that with modern refs, Wayne Allison used to do it all the time and it was acceptable back then as the refs rarely gave fouls for that, now a ref will give the defender the benefit 9 out of every 10 times.

I don't think he has any desire, whatsoever, to learn how to head the ball in the situations being discussed.  The way of football these days means it's probably never even coached that way either.  His desire is to have balls in at feet or the body, feel the defender and turn them or hold up and lay off.  He prefers the ball down the side of the defender where he can use his pace.

If my fear is true, then what he does need some coaching on is how to be a pest at least.  Not go up for the header but find a way of ensuring the defender has no control in clearing the ball when those high clearances come his way.  He is never going to want to be a Wayne Allison type.

Work the defender, piss off the defender, get the defender in your back pocket.

I am not sure what it is like in the UK but in America, youth players are not allowed to head the ball until they are atleast 14 i think....just stupid....when i coach 14-16 year old kids, they have no idea how to head a ball correctly and safely are are just flat out scared of it....
maybe that is the case with Simpson?
