We were the same, but picked Drayton/Daventry in Northamptonshire which wasn't quite as extreme! Don't regret the move one iota so far. When commuting to London starts again, that might change!

It's nice today, and yet I'm watching it rain in Southampton on the TV. It's much more moderate than you'd imagine, basically 10-15 degrees all the time, which suits me fine as I don't really like anything over 25 anyway. Plenty of wind mind.

Also, missed Tokyo off the list, which really should have been the most interesting one. Albeit that was only for four months.

41 years in Swindon (Covingham, Freshbrook, Woodhall, Rodbourne Cheney, Lawns, Broad St/Manchester Rd area, Liden, Moredon and Eldene) followed by nearly 5 years in Newnan, Georgia USA (which just about clings to being a part of Metro Atlanta - it goes South very quickly below me).  My son pays a passing interest to Swindon results (mostly to poke fun at me I think) but has become a true local, following Georgia Bulldogs, Atlanta Falcons and Atlanta Utd.  I'd call the latter my second team now - helped they won the MLS in their second year.

PMH then Walcot with a view of the floodlights from my bedroom window. Moved to Torbay (boo) in 1979. Would be a great move now but not when you're a Swindon obsessed nine year old. Every day is like Sunday. Back there periodically when unemployed.
Stoke on Trent for 3 drunken years, Rotherham for a year to show solidarity with the unemployed ex miners  :D. Dorchester and Weymouth for a boring year. Nottingham for two years mainly drunk in The Bell or Rock City. Thatcham and Newbury for a year whilst the A34 was being built. Wish I had been protesting in Snelsmore Wood rather than stuck in a queue going to and from Poxford. Trowbridge for a year allowing the locals some practice at damaging my car. Bath for ten years which was great. Liked Twerton but Lansdown was snobby. Then we saw the light and moved to Bradford on Avon. Wonderfully friendly town. Here until further notice.

I’m 39. Not gonna lie, it’s been tough. In school all my mates supported the usual suspects - Man Utd, Liverpool, Arse etc. Only a couple of Swans fans, but then, the Swans were shite back then. Now I’m surrounded by Swansea fans who have had some amazing years recently. Beaten some big teams, got into Europe and won the League Cup.

Still, one club for life and all that.

This thread has brought a lot of the lurkers, good to see some names we rarely see or I haven't seen before.

The Charlesworth house was the former home of Tony Wilson of Hacienda fame. Nice little cottage that I got from the people he sold it to. According to "24 hour party people", it was there that Ian Curtis stayed in when he was having marital problems. The same bedroom my mate shat in several years later on New Years Day!

It seems very clear that many long term supporters came from the outskirts of Swindon.

I could be wrong, but I imagine a lot of non-Swindon based supporters post on this forum as it's probably the closest thing to actually physically being in the ground/pub with other STFC fans. There are literally thousands of STFC fans that are Swindon or locally based that don't post on internet forums etc, so I wouldn't worry too much about fans links IMHO.

More like its what happens when a forum with a demographic of middle aged men is considered, people are much more footloose these days.

Hope you are right and that will secure the future of the Football club.
Would be interesting to know the amount of support that came from the Railway and BMC works.
The last game I attended was at Orient and was really impressed with the support and especially with the amount of middle age 50 to 65 year old supporters that were there. Would be great to encourage all age groups to support the club.
Once Power has gone hopefully the supporters will return in numbers.    

There are a lot of 'yoof' that do go. I think there is a decent mix of young and old that do go.

Too much ‘top level’ football readily available these days.

Don’t think (m)any of the future generations will be hardcore Swindon loyalists. Best we can probably hope for is to be their ‘second team’ and hope they go to a decent amount of games for the ‘live’ experience.

...although nothing changes in the sense that people are more likely to turn up to support a winning team.

Well, back in olden times there was naff all else to do that was even faintly exciting/entertaining. There used to be a whole mass of us travelled on the train from Chippenham to watch STFC - not particularly pleasant when we were playing City or Rovers and they were on the same train!

Allegedly the first baby born at home in a prefab in Swindon. Delivered by Dr Liechenstein who managed to escape from Fascist persecution and death but not members of his family, I have since been told. Lived in London, Manchester and Gloucestershire after Swindon. Met Reg in the Wheatsheaf in Old Town in 1980ish. Became mates after that as supporters and dads. Just off now from Stroud on the train with a Scouser to collect Reg's old programmes etc. The Scouser takes memorabilia around to help people with dementia etc. My dad played in the same team in the 1930s in Swindon as Terry Wollen's dad and Ernie Hunt's grandad. 'Up the Town.'
