Title: Wigan v Swindon pre match chat and matchday thread
Post by: 4D on Tuesday, May 4, 2021, 06:47:00
It's nearly over  :wotjump: :yay:
I've probably never felt as low about the club as I do now, first time I've not given a toss about a league game.

4-0 Wigan

I wonder if there are simmering animosities within the players that are like a pressure cooker waiting to explode when this next defeat concludes. 3-0 loss.

Let's do this properly! A defeat or a draw with Rovers winning to put us firmly on the bottom of the pile where we belong.

I’ll watch it. It’s crap cold weather, so nothing better to do.

After all the hope at the beginning of the season, to be where we are now is criminal.
But let’s face it, you couldn’t have made it up could you.

Let’s just see what’s happened:

1: Manager resignation.
2: Two players ‘retire’ basically telling us to do one.
3: More keepers than the colours of a rainbow.
4: A pay to play player who can’t tackle, can’t kick anything other than opposing players and can’t find 9 red shirts in front of him for the easiest of passes.
5: More formations than ‘Strictly’.
6: An owner who really isn’t, or is he.
7: International interest in buying the club, or have we?
8: A court case to decide above.
8 : Talking of court cases, our groundsman is doing time.
10: The worst pitch In decades.
11: And finally, bottom of the league when it comes to club / supporter communication

You really couldn’t make it up!

Not bothered by the result, not really bothered by whatever performance we dish out, only watching as I have paid for it already and I have watched every other poxy fucking game this year so no point stopping.

We won't score and will get beaten, just not bothered TBH.

100% attendance record for the first time.
A bit of a labour of love, akin to looking after a relative with serial incontinence.
The majority of matchday Saturday evenings have been spoiled and nearly all of the Tuesday ones.
Must remember that it's not the winning but the taking part that counts.
Determined that nothing will spoil the slow cooked lasagne and the bottle of red that will follow the match.

The release of the fixtures in June might help to get the STFC juices flowing again.
Less so once Scunthorpe away on a Tuesday night sinks in.

It's not an issue this season and won't be one next season and possibly for some time to come.
But who is the EFL dickhead that think's the 12:00 kick off to complete L1 on a Sunday is a good idea.
The earliest train service out of Swindon would mean rolling into Wigan North Western just as the early leavers are thinking of heading off to beat the traffic.
A weekend in Mancunia wouldn't have been such a bad thing I guess.
Not that rail travel would have been possible this weekend anyway, something to do with a load of crackhead trains apparently.

Here's to a good summer for all Town fans.
Hopefully by the time we reconvene in August there will be an ownership and management team in place for whom setting low standards that consistently fail to be met is not the height of ambition & ability.

Anyway, some proper Northern soul to finish with.

Finishing the season with a side where a grand total of two players in the starting XI are contracted for next season. Brilliant long-term planning lads.

Just feels like a "let's get this over with" selection, rather than anything else.

Presumably Curran will come one at some stage if this impacts upon the alleged and unsubstantiated appearance payments/bonuses that might be due to the club.

Wigan were in the worst 3 teams we have played this season with Rovers being the worst but Wigan would be next and then Northampton. They seem to have improved since they were bought out a few months back.

I gave my reasons for putting myself through this.

I have paid for this with a season ticket and have watched every shit minute of this shit season so its a challenge now to keep my 4 season record going of not a game on iFollow or in person.

Its a Sunday and my wife is working, I have nothing to do, TV is shit, can't be bothered to play a computer game so its something to do anyway.

I have no positive expectation for today so even if we string together 4 passes it will be some achievement and maybe get a goal or at least have a few shots.

It is also probably the last game most of these players (probably 90%) will ever play for Swindon and almost to a man they will not be missed and many will also live long in the worst team ever line ups of the future.

Thats as positive a spin as I can put on it.

When a team is already relegated all the "true fan" stuff goes out of the window when a game is totally meaningless, as long as the fans return when next season starts again.

I think Curran has been at least on the bench in every single game this season hasn't he?

If he missed sitting on the bench or eve starting in 1 then I have missed that.

Permanent fixture so as you rightly state not even worth commenting on really is it, his being there is inevitable so why bother even mention?

I think you may have jumped the gun slightly. I know it can't be end of season blues - this one has been forgettable.

JBZ is known for his WUM essence (hmm essence of WUM could be a big fragrance seller) at times but I interpreted it as him basically saying "read between the lines" especially if Curran comes on and gets minutes today...

In some ironic way at present, it might be one of the only reasons why Town are still in business possibly?

The judge may have ordered Clem and Standing to bridge a financial gap legally but that isn't to say Lausanne Lee has his own agreements in place elsewhere, of which if the terms aren't met could have much worse consequences :hmmm:

I’m watching and I have no clue. There is little semblance of any defensive organisation. Lots of half arsed ambling around and booting the ball to nobody in particular. Thank fuck the majority of these rancid turds will be gone soon.

Thanks PV. That makes them the 28th and final (hopefully) addition to my incredibly-dull-but-I've-done-it-now Sporcle quiz...

https://www.sporcle.com/games/nemostfc/swindon-town-defences-202021

Can you name all 28 unique central defensive pairs/trios Town have used this season? Just as boring as watching the game but £10 cheaper!

(If anyone is doing it, it should accept the answers in any order, shout if you have issues. Format is Calderwood & Taylor or Thompson & Turnbull & Stephens)

Will check that out later possibly Nemo. Good work.

Oh well, the rain has cleared for a quite glorious and warm afternoon. Not wasting it in what has been a very soggy May so far. Good for the flora and fauna though and soon we will notice the benefits of all that rain. Should do a fair chunk of our lands good for some of the Summer and hopefully L-L can grow some beautiful big red peppers bursting with ideas that could even whet his blue tinged appetite.

A wet Spring usually points to not a scorching Summer but an elongated warm one. We'll be BBQing into the October eves, all with a renewed sense of freedom and possible normality.

See you all in early August for more feather ruffling shenanigans. Some of you hate me, some of you tolerate me, some of you love me but don't yet know it. Some of you will always think I'm an insufferable cunt but I actually love all of it in this small corner of the ethereal world. Don't argue with each other too much, hug your loved ones, remember Reg fondly and always remember to leave your morals at the TEF doorstep.

For now though, there's hay to be made.

I still can’t make my mind up if that players have been drained of everything after 30 odd games with Sheridactyl or if they’re just genuinely shite. Not one of them offers anything remotely like a professional footballer.

I can’t.
I completely forgot Conroy

4 draws in 24 team league must be close to some sort of record. I assume no team has had 0 draws is a season.

That has to be at the bottom of the average amount of draws usually seen by a team going down by some margin, which makes it harder to swallow because you just know that had we achieved an average we may have had enough points to stay up.

Mildenhall:
- Enjoyed the fact we won
- For 46 games we have been mightily woeful
- They think red card was harsh. Letter of law is that he was last man. It helped us as it gave areas to play in and get the ball in to
- Tyler Smith: Players play themselves into a team and need to play well enough to make sure that managers can't leave them out. In the last couple of games Smith has done that. Wright thought his movement would help today
- Ending with a bit of fight is good. Mildy didnt want to come bottom of the league.
- Hard to put into words what has happened this year
- A very very very disappointing season
- Alan Mac: Puts things into perspective. Desperately sad week for the club and all who knew him. Not enough time to talk about how good a person he was
- OOC Players? No movement to Mildy's knowledge.
- Important going forward that people have the time to make the right appointments and decisions.
- It might take a bit of time, but Mildy knows no more than that
- If OOC and relegated, players need to look at themselves. Did they do enough and lay it all on the line? If the answer is yes, then you may be offered a contract. If you can't then you shouldn't be surprised not to get one
- 7 goalkeepers? Not experienced this before. Bonkers rule about emergency loans. Something that needs to be looked at and simplified.
- Camp has been first class since he's come in. He's a credit to the profession. He could easily have said no, but was chomping at the bit to come in and try to help
- Message to the fans? So many things that you could say. After last year it has been a rollercoaster 24 months. Its been difficult with no fans. Sometimes you need supporters there to help spur the team on and give them a kick up the bum too. Hopefully the pandemic will end and we can have fans back
- Getting relegated hurts. Especially those who have come up through the club.
- We didn't win enough and didn't draw enough. Not enough resilience to get further up the table.
- Those who are here will use this as a lesson and don't want this to happen again.

Title: Re: Wigan v Swindon pre match chat and matchday thread
Post by: Nomoreheroes on Sunday, May 9, 2021, 17:27:58
Hartley:
- Mildy is a Swindon boy and knows how we as fans feel
- Always want to look back and be proud of something, but this year, there is nothing and it leaves a sour taste in the mouth.
- Winning 4-3 makes you think 'what might have been'
- 'Mightily woeful' is a good summary of the season
- Red card was a turning point. Although Swindon had become an attacking force once Smith had come on
- From that moment onwards they used the size of the pitch.
- Shouldn't underestimate the contribution of Hope too
- Both substitutes made an im pact on the game
- Garrick injured which is why Hope came on
- Smith for Payne to go traditional 442
- Tyler Smith: Two up top seems to have worked. We haven't been able to create a solid base to play one up top. When we play Brett, Brett, Brett, Brett Pitman, Brett Pitman on his own then there is no get out option. When we play two up top we look more threatening

Twine:
- Good way to end a shocking season
- Its not been good enough and we deserve to end up where we are
- As a Swindon Town fan its not a nice position to be in
- We need to do everything we can to get back to L1
- Shocking news about Alan Mac. Gave good advice and was brilliant. Hopefully he was looking down and saw the goals and felt proud
- Everyone who know Macca said what an all round great guy he was. Hit Twine hard as he was close to him. Such sad news
- We didnt play our best game today. Too little too late. Wigan were already safe and we were already down.
- Its not been good enough in both boxes all season
- Twine breakout year: Most he's played and scored this year. Counts for nothing since we were relegated.
- We need to work hard and come back fitter and stronger next year
- Will going back to L2 hamper Twine's career? Not thinking about that now. He loves playing football. He's playing at the moment and has been for the last year. Its frustrating to have gone down
- Have Town offered him a contract? Yes, there is something on the table. Its something he has to think about over then next few weeks. He enjoys playing at Swindon, but will have to see what happens. Doesn't know who the new manager will be, but it will obviously have a bearing
(My take is that he sounded as if he wants to stay)

Title: Re: Wigan v Swindon pre match chat and matchday thread
Post by: Nomoreheroes on Sunday, May 9, 2021, 17:38:48
Hartley part 2:
- Twine still hasn't dismissed staying. Similar sentiment as to Mildy. Both are Swindon through and through. In his own mind he feels as if he's part of the furniture. But, career wise, it might not be the right thing.
- Twine's one and only factor seems that he wants to play regularly. In L1 or Champs he might not. An interesting one that might rumble on until we know who the new manager will be

Hartley part 3:
- Talked about Wigan not really being good enough to stay up. They were lucky that there were 4 teams that were worse than them
- Substitution and going 442 was the turning point for us.
- Surprising to have replaced Payne as he was one of the bright sparks. But, giving Smith the opportunity to run directly at the centre halves was what we needed
- Interview with Peacock on Friday: Peacock said may be able to bring some of these lads back. Not sure who he was talking about, but speculated that Smith might be one. Hartley thinks he would be good with another striker
- Pitman's time has come. He's not quick enough and his scoring touch has waned. He'd still score the odd goal in L2, but another striker is required.

Hawes:
- Asked for a quick word on Oxford getting into the play offs. He said he had a quick word, but wouldn't be allowed to use it on air.
- Oxford are very direct, scrappy and ugly and have done well to get to the play offs. We'll have to see if Blackpool can cope with that
- Paul Mullin burst into life at Cambridge this year
- As for new owner and manager: If there is new money around, whoever is in charge will need to be careful as everyone will be trying to rip them off as we have to buy a complete team
- Why is Wellens here again? Interesting that we have seen him at the last 2 or 3 games. Maybe he had nothing better to do on a Sunday lunchtime. Maybe its just because the games have been close to his Greater Manchester base. Maybe it helps him to assess L1 and L2
- Lots of talk about it taking a while to appoint Flitcroft. For all his faults, he put together a squad quickly. Although he allegedly had an open cheque book.
- Chances of coming back up? Next season's priority has to get the ownership resolved and make sure we don't go out of the league.
- If Hunt, Baudry and Fryer stay fit then they can be built around.
- Hartley: Best moment of the year was beating Oxford in Broadbent's game. Worst moments have been no fans at games.
- Hawes: Oxford fun. Highpoint was Twine's goal vs Ipswich - Felt like there was a bit of hope. Low point was Milton Keynes. The rolling over that brought about the inevitable. Way below what was acceptable.

7 goal thriller huh? Bit of a shame I decided to give the game a miss.

I checked the score on the game three times - once at 1-0, then at 3-1, then at 3-4. Absolutely typical to have that sort of turn around in a dead rubber.

Thanks to NMH for his post-match write ups and to PV for the commentary this season (again). Even if I had the time and the money I'm not sure I would have chosen to watch us this season so your match day contributions are valued.

Yeah I echo these sentiments, NMH's post game summaries are always appreciated. And PV, even more praise to you only because I know some on here do disagree with your opinions and often let you know. The fact that you spend the time during the season to provide your updates should be applauded. Top men, both of you.

It is my absolute pleasure, so many times over the years I have listened to the radio comms and it bore little or no relation to what is actually happening on the pitch. Often a goal would go in and for the first 10 or 15 seconds you have no idea as to which side have scored. I just try and ease that for those who cannot watch or also those who cannot liten to games and chekcing updates on here.

Much to the chagrin of several posters I have no plans to stop these updates.

As for NMH I too fully appreciate his efforts on the post match interviews and how he condenses them into more managable bite size blocks, thanks for your time and condensing of the crap often spurted out.

My pleasure. I enjoy listening to the post match stuff and find the best way to digest is to scribble notes. Glad others get something from them.

This morning (whilst on the phone for 90 mins trying to cancel a holiday) I took in yesterday's game. Thought it was a pretty poor display again, with the result papering over a number of cracks.

We won because of two things. A very harsh sending off and because we eventually played with two up top. The defence was absolutely appalling and we could (and should) have conceded after making it 3-3. Quite how our defence was overrun by a 10 man team with the centre forward having acres of space and oodles of time I'll never know!

Other snippets:
Camp was just 'OK' today. He made a couple of errors, one of which cost us the first goal.
Thompson is not very good. Jostles and bullies. Played the suicide pass of the match in the 90th minute after we had equalised.
Broadbent and Grounds cannot play together. Broadbent thinks he's Hoddle at times, while Grounds actually played one of the best passes of the game to put Hope through for his goal. Both were arguing about the other being out of position much of the time.
Hunt was a liability at RB but looked good going forward when they were down to 10 men.
Midfield looked lightweight again. Grant looked immobile. Palmer is a L2 player.
Twine did OK with two strikes, but I'd expect him to dominate midfield more, rather than show 'flashes'.
Pitman tries, but alone he offers nothing. I'd also like to see him replaced next year with someone a bit more mobile.
Payne showed why I won't be sad to see someone else sign him. A few flashes, but we looked better when he was replaced for a striker.
Hope had his best game for a while. Lots of possession down the right, but absolutely awful crossing, except for the one placed on Smith's head for the equaliser.
Smith showed he is raw. Had an opportunity before his goal but didn't see the pass from Twine coming.

Thank God that season is over. I'm now looking forward to hearing the off field issues being sorted and being excited and rebuilding in L2. Hopefully, we can do this well and build a solid foundation that can grow and strength. Maybe in 2-3 years we will be back in L1 with a stronger team that can be tweaked to make it competitive in this league. Who knows, maybe we can get back to being consistently one of the top 10 in this division. Time will tell.

Thanks to you both, especially NMH because Ifollow often cuts off before the interviews. Just one question ...

Would NMH's condensing work on some of the posters on here?  ;)

All over thank fuck!

Watched the highlights and the conceded goals were a joy to watch as well as a couple of corkers from us.

Lets see what this crazy club brings us close season.

Usually i would be looking forward to a clear out and new manager excitement.

I suppose i am just hoping we start next year as a club and no stupid points deduction.  It truly has been a woeful season.

Just watched the highlights, In terms of the first goal whilst Camp should have got there, their player should never have been able to run onto the header as easily as he did.

And despite multiple watches what was their player sent off for?

Just watched the highlights, one of the worst red cards I’ve seen, no idea what the ref saw, was his last game by all accounts.

Just saw the highlights also- God is our defence shockingly shit.  If that doesn't get fixed over the summer we won't need a points deduction to see us out the league.

I know it was only a couple of minutes of highlights but attacking play looked quite promising.  Almost like the players can play when they want to/are allowed to. Makes me wonder how we would have done with anyone else than Sheridan - I think we would have stayed up.
