Title: Swindon Town Vs Franchise Official Matchday Thread
Post by: SuggWillSugg MBE on Friday, August 24, 2012, 23:01:37
I think we can beat the franchise.

Saying that I don't think there is a single team in the league I'm "scared" of. especially when we're at home.

2-0 Town.

Williams to get off the mark and McCormack.

2-0 was going for three but think they will be a bit harder to crack. Williams and Collins with the goals. 8,006 in attendance 600 from franchise.

Rather than try to predict a score, I got in my time machine to take a look at tomorrow's papers and get the result that way.  Richard Branson seems to be one of their fans...and he's not happy.

This should provide a much tougher test than Crawley, suspensions or no suspensions. MK are my favourites to be champions and rightly so I think. Robinson's managed to keep the side that reached the play-offs last year together and added the experience (Lowe, Smith, Kay etc) that could finally tip Franchise over the promotion finishing line, as much as I hate to say that.

BUT, we are in good form, unbeaten at home for a whole year and have only conceded one goal at home in something like 18 or 19 games. Our defence seems to be strong even with one or two of the first team defenders out, while the rest of our new signings have gelled really well with the squad. We looked really good the other night, really good.

It'll still be a close game, but I reckon we'll edge it 1-0 or 2-1.

Should be a great game today, I can't see any team running away with the league this season but I expect us and franchise to be in the mix. They may be a strong side but I fancy our chances at home against any team that likes to get it down and play. 3-2 for me

Re their whingeing about £10 parking for disabled supporters, think they'll find if they show their blue badge when entering the car park they will only be charged £5, also they'll be looked after in a nice new disabled bit (pitchside covering) Have also heard that there is a dedicated steward that would go and collect their half time drinks for them (coffee/tea etc but not alcohol). I know other teams allow a carers ticket at a reduced rate or free but not sure if we do it at the CG.

Whenever talk of Franchise FC comes up and people 'never setting foot in their ground', I always have to make the following point...

Whilst I have no more time for Franchise than any other self-respecting fan, there is nothing more important to me than the success of my own team. This is why I would go, and have been (just the once) to MK.

To me, the best way of hurting them is to beat them. By going and supporting your team, you are helping to increase the chances of that happening (I'm sure no one would disagree that teams play better when well supported).

What you are advocating is that no one turns up and supports our team - Swindon Town - this is anathema to me. Would you not even go to a play off semi-final at MK? Presumably not. For me though, the desire for my team to succeed far out-weighs my desire to see the failure of any other team, however much I might dislike them.

Two ways of looking at the same thing really.

There's a debate to be had there, certainly, and I understand your argument.  The play off semi scenario you mention would certainly cause a bit of a headache.  But on some things, I think you have to take a stand and then stick with your decision.  For me, the theft of the League place and the parachuting of a new club in to the upper echelons of the League structure runs counter to the promotion/relegation principle that underpins the whole of English football.  It was wrong in 2003 and it's wrong now.  I'm never going to compromise on that.

Don't get me wrong.  I 'get' the other argument and I certainly don't resent any of our fans for following it.  I'd even go so far as to recognise that my hard line on this puts me in a minority.  But that's the way I feel.  Franchise FC is a fucking abomination.  And for anyone who asks me or anyone else to forget or to 'move on', I would simply ask them to recognise that next time it could be us.

Personally, I've never really been one for doing things 'out of principal'. My attitude is, 'if I take a particular course of action, will it make a difference?' I would prefer not to shop at Tescos, fly with BA, eat at McDonalds or Burger King (in principal I should be a vegetarian) but it takes so much effort not to and ultimately makes no difference. I gave up having principals some time ago and frankly, I'm glad I did. It makes life much, much easier.

There will be those who would say I'm a lazy, complacent bastard but to be honest, I couldn't be fucked to argue with them 8)

from the Adver site:

2:37pm

A little bit of light on the Paul Benson situation now, with the club saying:

"Paul Benson has a slight injury and not risked this afternoon."

Make what you want of that.

i'd have thought they'd stirred enough shit lately.
That is totally out of order.

Cunts.

Cunting cunts. They really need to stop stirring the pot. It's becoming tiresome.

Match sounds like it's going well. And I can't hear the drum on player. So that's a bonus.

Great time to score, means they can't just park the bus & play for a point.

Town have had a few good chances & deserve to be in front.
Can't remember Wes having to make a save.

Lewington is a prize cock,  he was holding onto the ball to stop Ferry taking a free kick quickly and appeared to catch Ferry with his elbow. Really not sure it was deliberate, and didn't think the ref was going to send him off.

Oh and I fucking hate drums.

We made hard work of that tbh.  After the sending off they played so deep it made it difficult for us.  They never really looked like scoring, but Foderingham made a good save towards the end which was the difference between 3 points and 1.

We were definitely the better side, but a little disjointed at times.  Flint was probably my MOM and Mceveley was particularly poor.

Franchise need to sort out their discipline, but considering their manager spent most of the game moaning at the 4th official, it's no surprise his team are no better.

Another clean sheet and 3 points at Fortress County Ground.

Just back.

Probably just about edged that. Very good first half from Town where it could have been two or three nil at the break. The sending off was right in front of me and the correct decision from the referee; Lewington elbowed our bloke and was rightly dismissed. Thought the sending off would change the game and it did with Ritchie scoring from another cross-cum-shot. Expected Town to come out and dominate after the break but it just didn't happen. Have to give credit to Franchise who dug in and battled on, though they were lacking somewhat in the final third. Overall, a good three points and nice to see us up to third in the table - early days yet, but it certainly sends out a message to the rest of the league.

Just got back.

A good 3 points but made hard work of it. Ref spoilt a good game with the sending off but to be fair we should have been a couple up by then any way.

Thought all the new boys did really well. Rafa with a bit of confidence and time on the ball looks a different class compared to last year - very gifted and skillful. Back 4 looked solid and Flint was his usual battling self.

Ritchie wasn't my MOM, I'd give that to Miller.

Just about edged it ? their goalkeeper made 3 great saves and we also hit the woodwork where as Wes only had one save to make. Fair play to MK they looked more dangerous second half, but for a 10 minute panic period near the end I thought we looked in complete control.

We were completely dominant in the first half and it was a good job we got the goal when we did. They were much harder to break down in the 2nd half but we still created enough to really finish the game off. That number 5 couldn't handle Williams, De Vita had the better of Otsemebor for the majority of the game and we always looks threatening going forward. Flint had another solid game and Devera is growing more and more into the RB role. A lot of positives again today, let's hope for plenty more.
We couldn't really tell what Lewington got sent off for, all seemed like a bit of handbags to me. Shame it didn't stay 11v11 as it was much easier for us up until that point.

Title: Re: Swindon Town Vs Franchise Official Matchday Thread
Post by: reeves4england on Saturday, August 25, 2012, 17:26:13
Thought we totally deserved the victory today. Battered them for the first half hour - at times they couldn't get out of their half. BBC said we had 5 shots (3 on target) in the first half but I listed 6 on target off the top of my head - all over them. Think the red card is one of those where it could be red, could be yellow, but Lewington was stupid for doing what he did and knew the risk he was running. Then the goal finally came - a lovely ball from Ritchie which Collins apparently flicked home.

Second half we didn't really get going. For play to Franchise for battling but there wasn't an awful lot of quality on show and they very rarely looked an attacking threat, despite our play becoming increasingly disjointed.

Ritchie was OK today, but wouldn't have given him MOTM. I thought Flint was immense, whilst Williams worked his backside off and deserves a goal soon. McEveley didn't have a great game, hopefully it's just a one-off.

Bring on Stoke Reserves.

Another valuable 3 points, and what may turn out to be an early season 6 pointer. Their resilience when down to ten says to me that they won't be far off at the end of the season.

Fantastic first half from RdV, showing technique and confidence that we haven't seen from him before. Maybe it won't be so straightforward for Roberts to get in after all. He does on the left what Ritchie does on the right, in that he can go inside or to the byline. Otsemoboor was stumped. If he can improve his final ball then he will become even more of a threat. He tailed off second half, but overall, a good game.

Miller: my MoM. Everything he did worked. He uses the ball well, simple, uncomplicated, just keeps things ticking. His positioning is good, and he's constantly are aware of what is around him, organising those around him. He closed them down well, put in some great tackles (some of which was wrongly blown up by the ref) and generally marshalled things. A central midfielder in a Di Canio side ever be the fulcrum of the side - our creative play is down either side. If its tenacious battlers with a good level of composure that we are after, Miller is an astute signing.

Williams and Collins: played closer together today than on Tuesday and showed the early signs of an understanding. Here's hoping. Both have a good touch and good pace - especially Williams. Williams won everything in the air. The goals will come - very happy with them both.

Back four was solid, Ritchie his usual threat....onwards and upwards.

I think its good when many fans are saying different players were MoM's RdV, Ritchie, Flint, Miller, Williams etc

That shows it was a good overall performance even if the amount of goals in the win wasb't as good as some wanted, a win is a win and another clean sheet....excellent.

Haha! To be honest, reducing them to 10 every week "just for being Franchise" wouldn't be such a bad idea. They have no right to be playing in the FL.

At the end of the day, if you raise an arm to an opponents face you risk being sent off. Ferry didn't make a big deal of it by going down or anything - the linesman saw what Lewington did and gave what all/most officials will give.

The first half was a total shitting on summed up by Raffa taking the piss out of their no 17 who must have been twice his size. a lucky goal but we were compeltely different class to them for the first 45. The second half, however, was a different matter. They had a lot more possession but didn't do too much with it. we made a few errors but they didn't seize on them. Fl.int had a  cracking second half more so when Ibere came on for them. Their number 5 was a cheating cunt who every rtime he challenged in the air pushed his man away. The ref was a bit of a cock but the lino on the DRS side 1st half had a shocker.
MOM for me was DeVita but Miller, Ritchie and Flint weren't far away. McEveley has definitely had better days in a Town shirt but he'll be better next game.

Three points against Franchise is always welcome, and Lewington getting sent off tops the day off. If you give an elbow on a player, you deserve to go. He just didn't need to get involved. 4 off in 4 games takes some doing.

Other than that it seemed the ref came in the Franchise team coach.

First half we pissed all over them and it seemed it was a matter of time before we did. Due to the fact we went in 1-0 up, I think the players thought they could 'coast' through the game as they were down to 10.

Anyway, 4 clean sheets in 4 games is not to be sniffed at, with Big Wes now only conceded 1 goal in 18 League games at the CG.

MoM - Miller.

Happy with the performance and 7 points out of 10, no goals conceded and in the 2nd round of the cup to come...an impressive start to the season!

Hope we keep up the good work, O*ford ticket in my pocket and looking forward to Tuesday!

Just got back.

We were the much better side and fully deserved the win. First half some of our football was brilliant, and we should have had more than 1 by half time. De Vita had a brilliant first half, he tore their right back a new arsehole.

It did look like a sending off to me, it looked like he threw his elbow at Ferry. It changed the game a bit but we still looked fairly comfortable. I can't remember Wes having to make a proper save all game.

I thought Miller and Ferry were great in the middle and we looked as solid as usual at the back. Williams is looking very good, he wins most things in the air and has a great turn of pace, only bad luck has stopped him getting a goal so far.

A great three points and the signs are very positive for the rest of season.

Should be a good test on Tuesday without any pressure on us, bring it on!

Best part of the ginger ninja getting sent off was that it wasn't actually in play, ref had blown for a foul and Ferry tried to get the ball to take the kick, throw your arm out and expect to be sent off.  Interesting one or two are making Miller mom, I commented on the way out you hardly notice Miller during the game - which must mean he is doing his job well, although it was Flint mom for me.  And I won't even start about the fucking drum . . . .
Oh and the guy sitting a few rows behind me who claimed that it was Taylor (Oldham) who was sent off just didn't have a fucking clue!!!

Agree with the above. Not surprised Their discipline is so bad with Robinson in charge. He spent big parts of the game trying to wind up Paolo and was more interested in arguing with the 4th official and our bench than the game. Thought we played really well first half and looked comfortable for most of the 2nd but would of been nice to finish them off with a 2nd to save a nervy last few minutes. Great three points and capped off with another clean sheet.

Watched an interesting interview with Karl Robinson on the MK OS last night. He came accross very well I thought and made some good points. He was nothing but complimentary about Swindon in general and Di Canio in particular. When asked about the (as it was then) 3 sendings off, he left a good 3 or 4 second pause before replying ..."well we didn't lose any (of those 3 games) did we?"...so basically he was saying he didn't have any problem with a player being sent off as long as they got something out of the game. That was all he said, no..."we've got to be more disciplined"..or anything like that, no contrition whatsoever.

They're fucking themselves badly though. It's ridiculous to (seemingly) ignore it as Robinson is (seemingly doing) or for their fans to dream up conspiracy theories (STFC fans are pretty adept at that as well in fairness) but they really need to look at themselves if they want to be serious promotion contenders.

Not wanting to jinx anything, but I reckon our disciplinary record has been pretty exemplary under PDC hasn't it? A red card for Risser at Northampton last season, Comazzi early on, other than that, pretty damned good I would say.

Yeah, if I was a Franchise fan (shudders) I would have been wanting him to at least pay lip service to wanting to improve their disciplinary record. The way I read it, he just seemed to be saying 'the end justifies the means'. Bit short sighted I would have thought.

We were excellent, never stopped working, Miller was class and my MOM.

Rafa's improving with every game this season, Ritchie was fantastic, Flint, Macca, Devera solid as usual, I rate Jay but he's not the best going forward. Love watching Ferry play, assured and uses the ball intelligently. Collins and especially Williams were a handful all game.

We made one of the favourites for this division look bang average. Fortress CG.. long may it continue.

It's not as if he had a Rose-like shocker, just mis-hit a couple of crosses. He was fine defensively.
He also lost a tooth half way through the 2nd half. Assume that he was in severe pain for 10 minutes as he became a little ropey but regained his composure towards the end of the game

Odd. ((The Moocamp) Seemed the #1 site to take the piss out of their no mark supporters in previous season.
------
Shame to have missed the game, but while they were weakened to come away from it as the only Football League team to not have conceded a goal this season says the spine of the team may well be up to league 1. Last season we didn't concede too many, but it was not a given we'd repeat that this season (early days, but Franchise are no mugs).

Looking forward to Stoke now.

OST - I kind of saw this coming if Collins and Williams didn't start finding the back of the net and getting goals to their name.

I don't honestly give a flying fuck if they don't score all season if we keep winning games, they keep playing well, working their bollocks off and we're getting the goals from the midfield.

Only thing I worry about though is spackers that like getting on there backs and a lack of goals denting their confidence.

Benson would have easily put away at least a couple of the missed chances, the result is nothing short of a disgrace. We should be top of the league this evening."

Very sorry Den, But I stand by my comments 100%.

We were great in the first half, but could not score, but for the lucky goal on half time.

And in the second half, we should have extended the lead to 4-0 or more.

If that is the best we can do, we can forget about promotion right now and I just cannot believe that PDC hid behind MK getting the man sent off!! His BBC interview refers.

We should have won easily, simple as that.

Fucking hell

OST - I kind of saw this coming if Collins and Williams didn't start finding the back of the net and getting goals to their name.

I don't honestly give a flying fuck if they don't score all season if we keep winning games, they keep playing well, working their bollocks off and we're getting the goals from the midfield.

Only thing I worry about though is spackers that like getting on there backs and a lack of goals denting their confidence.

From the other side of the coin, I did say to my dad on the way home yesterday, if Connell had missed chances like Williams had, rightly or wrongly he would have dropped him.  I hope we're not going to see that sort of thing happen with Williams, but for some reason I think there was a bit more than met the eye with the Connell situation.

In terms of the support, I sit in the Arkells and the drums have completely spoilt the atmosphere in the last 2 games.  Even when the Town End and DRS have been singing the incessant banging has overshadowed it.  If a drum is going to become the norm for away support, the club seriously needs to think about banning them.

I like drums...you cant beat them :-[

I think even if i were an MK fan yesterday i would have been tempted to murder the beating drummer.

My view is that connell was off loaded because he's not good enough for league one. Pure and simple.

At least we can look forward to some decent away support this year, without drums....Pompey especially should provide a good atmosphere....but then there is the bell...

This. Even sitting in the Town End with all the singing the bloody drums can still be heard. Looking forward to being an away fan next weekend just to not have to hear a drum!

I think we should start retaliating with obscure instruments. If your entire section of the TE could pitch up with Ukeleles, that would entertain me significantly.

I did notice yesterday that musical instruments are banned, unless you write to the club in advance for permission.

They should just ban them...end of.

The threat of vuvuzelas at the corresponding away fixture should do it.

Crawley and Franchise: two of the most plastic 'clubs' in existence.  The drumming should come as no surprise really.

And it looks like it happening again at Bradford, starts the first game & they are a goal down when he gets substituted, and the guy that comes on scores the equaliser. Has been sub for the next two games, which they have won comfortably.

From what I've seen of Williams he looks absolutely tremendous and it's only a matter of time before he starts scoring. I remember when we signed Shearer though and it took a little while for him to get  going. There were always one or two mongs who, after that, he was never good enough for. Some people just want shooting.

Read this in today's Football League paper, they interviewed  a home fan and an away fan after the game and this is from a franchise fan " An eventful game as expected and to our disbelief our forth straight red in four games with Dean Lewington sent off. Swindon played us off the park and deserved the win. If they play like they did in this game all season they will be champions. With promotion a clear goal this season something is going to have to change and fast to control the discipline and offer more threat as a team. Dons looked slightly out of their depth and it's clear the lack of first team players through suspension is taking it toll. Overall this game offered nothing but frustration but again Swindon deserved maximum credit for a phenomenal performance . Although their goal was more of a lucky cross that turned into a shot, so the Dons did well not to concede again and David Martin kept the Dons in the game truly "
Today's FL paper has a double page write up on our game along with articles on Caddis and Paolo's fall out and a double page on Simon Cox who mentions his time at Swindon.

Re comments on Thisis, anyone who doesn't appreciate the ability and work rate of Williams and Collins is clearly not used to watching or playing football.  They both drop deep to win balls and bring the wide men into play (this was one reason why De Vita played so well against Crawley).  They are also good at winning the flick-ons and they work well as a pair.  The goals will come, nothing to worry about.

True enough while the team is getting results....not so sure the lack of goals will be tolerated when we start conceding again though.

Lets hope they bang a few in soon.

In fact the attandance has been recorded as in excess of 18 in every national paper I've seen. The Adver said it was exactly 10k less at 8299, so someone has put an extra 1 at the front wherever the papers get this info.
