Title: Draw yourself as a vehicle of some sort.

Actually I didn't draw this. I wish I had done though it's ace. In fact this whole thread is a bit of an excuse to post it.

Interesting hybrid...looks like a cross between a quinquereme and a carrack.

In fact, I just couldn't pass up the opportunity to use the word quinquereme, having been forced to learn it as a 10 year old...and subsequently having no use for the knowledge.

I'd never heard the word before.

Are there any other words which contain two qu? I can't think of any, but then I wouldn't put it past me missing some obvious ones.

Queequeg was a harpooner on the Pequod.  (never thought I'd type that sentence.)

Is a ship a vehicle ? I thought that was generally reserved for land based transportation, although my dictionary is vague on the matter.

Wouldn't a quinquereme have 5 banks of oars   ?

Is an internet forum a vehicle for posting Moby Dick references?

That site is just plain wrong. The Romans stole all their ship designs from the Carthagininans, and as such the quinquereme was designed by Carthage. They dominated the Med just before the time of Hannibal and Scipio.

Actually Reg, It seems that there is no firm agreement on the quinquereme. The references below could put you in the right, or neither of us. Shall we call it a win-win ?

http://www.economicexpert.com/a/Quinquereme.htm    (Neither of us correct)

http://www.geocities.com/Area51/Shire/6423/Ships/essay.html  (mentions 5 per oar, but "many banks")

Actually, the Carthaginians pinched it from Dionysius, tyrant of Greek Sicily who was the first to be credited with a quinquereme (or πεντήρης as he'd have called it, being Greek) but as nev says it's not clear what a quinquereme was or whether the Roman one was a derivation of Graeco-Carthaginian design.

EDIT: And Skippy the Bush Kangaroo was one of the greatest kids' tv series ever. FACT!

The Slave Traders have a famous grave dedicated to another Scipio Africanus.

here's the inscription....

I who was Born a PAGAN and a SLAVE
Now sweetly sleep a CHRISTIAN in my Grave
What tho' my hue was dark my SAVIOR'S sight
Shall Change this darkness into radiant Light
Such grace to me my Lord on earth has given
To recommend me to my Lord in heaven
Whose glorious second coming here I wait
With saints and Angels him to celebrate

A vague relation to this thread, down to the Roman theme.

But in the roman days they had a weapon known as 'incendiary pigs'. These weapons where literally pigs which where covered in tar, lit and then sent running (in much pain) towards the enemy front lines to cause havoc.

They were mostly used to scare the elephants away. If you could make an elephant charge back towards it's own army you're on to a winner.

Aside from Ben's marvellous opener I really am upset about the lack of artwork in this thread.

I want to see at least 6 assorted TEF drawn vehicles by the end of lunch.
