Fred,

There is no replay...Extra time and pens if needed.

Has to be decided on the night. I just hope we've had some penalty training after last season's mare at Barnet.

From the OWS - The game is on, with the following comment

"there is no doubt whatsoever about the game going ahead tonight despite some light rain in Wiltshire on Tuesday lunchtime"

If that was light rain according to Town I'd hate to see a downpour!!

I would advise anyone travelling distance to check, we've just had one of those globally warmed flash floods, I was on my way to CG to get a ticket   Amazing how in 10-15 mins floods develop.

It will need drying weather now.....any more rain and I think it might go.

We've just employed that canoe slalom medallist to ferry things across the car park at our place.

I'm sure it'll be fine although you'll have to be a salmon to get up to the back of the DRS stand I expect.

Just out of interest, with all the work done on the pitch in pre season, do you think they improved the drainage (sp?) system? If they have they may be right on the game going ahead no matter what...depends on what they have done to the pitch mind.

There is something elemental about being out in a thunder storm...I quickly took down my brolly, hid from any trees, and thought if I'd done anything particularly sinful recently.

Just got back, was an exelent game with both teams passing well,QPR are a class outfit, both Town goals were top notch,Paynter was the bollox but my man of the match was Jack Smith, didnt put a foot wrong....Mcmanee was very good and i really think we are on the march in this league,i for one am a very happy bunny and my prediction of town winning the league isnt looking so daft after all....all credit to Malpass because this team is looking really confident...yes we let in three but this QPRteam are slick and will finish top three easy...only down side was the result because i cant remember the last time ive felt so happy after our first two matches.

i was impressed with both teams. Smith and Mcnamee looked good. QPR will scare a lot of teams in the championship this season with the pace of their front 3. Parrejo and Ledesma played well but did the piss me off with the time wasting and the diving. U don't need to that.

Title: Re: Official Swindon Town Vs Queens Park Rangers Mathday Thread
Post by: Batch on Tuesday, August 12, 2008, 21:19:07
I assume QPR had a strong but not quite full strength team out?

They were slightly the better side, but we gave it a good go and particularly in the first half looked damn good going forward. Paynter had another good game, great header. And Cox was as always a threat. McNamee was dangerous in the first half, they cut a lot of that out in the second by making sure they had 2 on him in the danger areas.

Where I think QPR were superior was in the central midfield. Our pairing worked bloody hard and were not really out of it, but QPR definitely had the edge.

Kasal was a little off the pace positionally again, but he has the ingredients to be a good asset once he settles into the pace of the English game and his weaknesses are worked on.

Jack Smith was also my man of the match. He had an excellent game. Hasney was also superb tonight!

Morrison had a reasonable game too, I was a bit worried after his shakey pre-season but that was encouraging.

Their #20 was a good player but an absolute little prick too.

Lastly Oxo is not as good as Bovril. Fact.

Woohooooo! Im glad other people noticed Jack Smith, My MOM too!  I thought he was absolutely excellent tonight.  Calm, composed, linked up very well with JP and made some excellent challenges and passes.  Totally deserves the shirt and my god he has worked hard for it as is far better than he was previously. Also thought Nalis was very good.

Casal was off the boil but he deserves more time to settle in so Ill leave it at that.

QPR were a very good side, well organised and very sharp.  Id be amazed if they aren't up there come end of the season.

Very entertaining game and least we can concentrate on the league now.

Agree with whats been posted - QPR looked a really good team and was a quality game of football with both teams playing good, slick passing football.

I'm absolutely positive that if we play like that at Cheltenham then we'll roll them over.  My only worry is that we might come unstuck playing that way when the weather and pitches start deteriorating - hopefully we'll have won the league by then though!!  :D

Good game, I hate it so much when we lose a lead though, whoever we are playing.....we just went to sleep for a few minutes after coming out for half time.

Macnamee, Cox and Paynter all looked great, and Jack Smith was fantastic. I was really impressed with some periods of slick one touch passing....i noticed that against Tranmere as well.

Im still worried about Casal though. Other than a couple of decent slide tackles, i though he looked out of place and position, and made several wrong choices.

And one more thing....i was sat in Don Rogers in front of three cocky cockney QPR fans who decided to get tickets for our stand. If you are going to sit with the home fans, dont start slagging off our players, cheering your goals and calling our fans cunts. This happened, and one bloke near me turned around and looked at them when we scored....and they decided to kick off and start grabbing his shoulder and arguing and saying the classic London cliches such as "You mugging me off", and "Jog on you caaant". Absolute twats.

Quite a mixed bag I thought tonight, we looked great going forward at times, with some really slick passing and good movement from the front two, but at times defensively we looked weak I think. QPR attacked with so much pace and in numbers and thats when they created their best chances, although they failed to take them.

Smith was great going forward but, but need a little bit more help when defending. Their second goal came about as a result of someone not picking up or closing down on the edge of our box, and he had so much time and space.

Casal has the raw attributes to be a good player, but gets himself into dodgy positions. Alot of the time he has the pace to get himself out of trouble but I think he'll improve with time.

The front two were magic, Cox was my motm for his work outside the box. When the broke towards the end, Cox sprinted 80 yards to make the challenge and his work rate was immense.

We look good, really good, but we looked good at home last year aswell, the real test is how we play in the first couple of away games.

aljofree = liability.

he moans like fuck at the rest of the defence, when nine times out of ten he is the cause of the problem.

casal wandered around a bit too much, Brez flapped at stuff alot but i guess the weather didnt help, smith had a good game, paynters header was magical, i do believe it was his zola-esque flick on from a corner at the townend that gave most of the stadium wood.

..........................................................................................

aljofree was poo! the defence holds a fairly high line, playing their strikers offside, which would work perfectly every time, except aljofree is 5 yards behind everyone else, playing them all onside.

he regularly loses the man he's sposed to be marking, he does nothing but shout at other players when he's the one at fault, his head drops when we concede and doesnt try to gee up the players, i defended him most of last season, but fuck me, he was poor today.

morrison i thought played well, he had a good game.

Most clubs probably never charged £10.00 which goes to show that if clubs give incentives etc that the fans will come! Plus QPR bought a few as well! Good night all around.

First time i'd seen MacNamee play, very impressive. His willingness to go at the full back and the quality of his delivery.... he's going to get hatfuls of assists this season.

I thought Yinka was quite defensively naive at times, that'll come with experience, but against a good attacking side like QPR, we should have gone with Amankwaah on the right and Smith on the left.

Everyone else played well. Knowing that QPR are likely to be there or thereabouts at the end of the season, fills me with confidence that could well have a side capable of being there or thereabouts ourselves. Loving the new, sexy passing style, well done MM

What an enjoyable evening that was! There was one move in the second half, didn;t amount to anything, but the one touch football was sublime. I feel so postive after tonight's performance, maybe more so than Saturday because we looked outclassed earl on and came back to give them a real game.

I got stuck coming up the M4 and thought I might miss the game, I'm glad I didn't.

They deservedly went one up and to be honest, could and should have been four up when we equalised against the run of play. After that though, while they managed to create a contant stream of chances, we played some really good stuff.

Brez: kicking was a bit ropey, but looked solid. Held ball well in wet conditions.

Smith: thought he was immense tonight. I criticised him Saturday but fair play, good all round performance

Morrison: did well. They had a lot of chances but he played ok.

Hasney: STOP HOOFING IT. Please. His positional sense is good, but he's a bit slow and gets exposed without Jerel behind him. Superb in the air.

Cassell: I think someone mentioned he was naive. Perhaps, but his speed was incredible and on one occassion he tracked back to defend a breakaway. Raw, but bags of potential. Lot more to come from him I feel...

JP: did ok. I feel he gives his opponent a lot of space by dropping off, but he did ok. Nothing special. Solid. Not a lot more to say about him really.

McNamee: awesome. Again, man of the match. Great skill, although the right back wised up to his flick inside after about an hour. Good crossing, just so exciting. For a small man who waddles when he walks, he's a superb player -  I wonder how long we can keep him?

Timlin: not so good tonight. Looked like he wanted to get rid of the ball as soon as he had it - nerves maybe? - and looked a bit lost. Some neat touches, but not as good as Saturday. Still did ok though, didn;t have a bad game.

Nalis: again, we looked a bit light in the middle, but did ok. His lack of pace was exposed a bit! Needs a few games still to reach full fitness.

Cox: took goal well and worked hard, didn't have as much space as Saturay, but did well.

Paynter: paynter and cox didn't link as well tonight but he was a constant threat I thought. Great goal, too.

QPR
They looked superb in the first half hour, their class really showed. But in the second half their brightest players, that right winger for example, drifted out of the game a bit. Perajo was very disappointing. Didn't look interested, went down too easily. Good deliveries though. My mate, QPR fan, was really surprised by how well we played...

Nice to see Dave Byrne clapping our fans at the end of the game. Both fans made it a good atmosphere.

I was fortunate enough to be in hospitality tonight and it is a lot better - looks a lot fresher. Saw Mark Devlin, too, and he looked very well, as did his son, Stan.

All in all good game, good atmosphere, a cracking night under the lights. Roll on Cheltenham... lets see how we get on away from home.

I think we could be in for a good season...

We played well everyone had a good game apart from Casal who was pretty pants and if we're being honest at fault for 2 of the goals.

He reminds me of a young Ifil. Fast, strong but wanders far too much. I'll give him a few more games before I make up mind up on him but dont think he adds anything to the team that Jamie Vincent wouldnt.

Rest of the back like were pretty good and Morrison didnt look out of place at all.

Midfielder were good but had a much harder game tonight. QPR didnt give us as much time and freedom on the ball as Tranmere did.

Front two worked hard and particularly in the first half were very clinical. We had about 3 attempts at goal in the first half scored twice and the keeper pulled off a good save.

QPR looked a very good side though and always had goals in them in the second half. Once they got to 3-2 they took their foot off the gas very much as we did Saturday we came close to punishing them but didnt.

Just got back (well about half an hour ago, but I needed a beer first)...really pleased with the performance.

Passing football, rehersed corner and free kick routines (not that they all came off, but we'd been practicing!!).  McNamee tearing it up, McGovern looked decent on the other wing, Paynter played well with Cox who was chasing everything down.  Timlin did well before tiring and Nalis was top notch (maybe my motm).  I thought Smith did well, one moment in particular sticks in the mind, when following a corner for us the ball was hoofed clear by QPR to him.  Instead of just aimlessly hoofing the ball back in he waited and tried to play in Cox down the right.  Marvellous...a Town player thinking!  Aljofree and Morrison were both fine at the back and Casal was no worse than Comminges when he first played for us.  Brez was my only real concern...made some good saves, but didn't command his area, left balls he should've come for...as the keeper it's up to him to sort these things out.

Off the field and on the field we are moving in the right direction.

QPR were the better side and deserved to win, but we were not outclassed.  I assume the QPR no. 3 is not a regular for them though...he was shite.

And when was the last time we had a wide player to take people on the McNamee does?  Walters?  Summerbee?

Feels damn fine to be a Town fan right now...we must play with the same adventure and spirit on Saturday...if we do Cheltenham have no chance.

Yay!

QPR relied heavily on that number 20 on the right hand side. They were a good side though and I can see why people are tipping them for promotion. They cut through us far too easily IMO, some players seemed scared to tackle in the first half. Nevertheless, great to see Cox and Paynter continue the scoring and also McNamee showing what he's capable of. I thought McGovern also had a good game.

Casal is not the finished article by any means, and people have been spot on in saying he's been naive. Keep in mind he was up against a very talented player last night, but the ball got to him far too often. As time goes on he will get better, no doubt in my mind about that.

I was pleased overall though, can't remember the last time a Swindon side actually played decent football, Jack Smith showed again that he is probably the most under-rated player in the squad. Funny how even on the adver forum, the anti Malpas stuff seems non existent.. Let's hope that keeps up! Heard some QPR fans after the game saying that we wouldn't look out of place in the Championship, which was nice to hear. I also took the fact they spent most of the second half timewasting (!!) as a compliment.

Onwards and upwards.

How annoying was the time wasting?  Argh!  Personally I thought QPR should have been out of sight by half time, but we did well to be leading at half time, stuck on in there.

Start of the second half was a disaster, in the first half QPR kept having a spare man on Jack Smith's side and that's what caused their 2nd goal early on in the 2nd half.  What annoyed me was the style of QPR's goals, it was like they were always first to react, gutted.

Having said that another good footballing performance by Town, MM's changes are begining to pay dividends, 5 goals in 2 matches nice return.  Just need to get our defence sorted.

And Juddie think it's a bit harsh saying Brez's kicking was "ropey"  he only fluffed one kick which is about 3 below the amount Camp fluffed.  Conditions were bad and despite that one along the floor his kicking was v.good.

QPR fan here...
it was a superb match last night, both teams contributed to a great game of football.
Been reading through your comments about us- mostly positive.  I do agree with the diving comment- to be fair to Parejo, it was his first start, so he'll get used to english football.  Also, barnsley had a man sent off on sat for a shocking tackle on him, so he was always going to be a bit wary tonight. We have a new fans favourite in our no.20 Ledesma- he looks pure class.  1st half we should have been 3 or 4 up, but after our 2nd half goals, you lot were definitely on top. Mcnamee caused us problems all night, and Billy Paynter always impresses me, he caused problems for us when he was at Port Vale.  If you keep your players fit, and maybe bring in 1 or 2 more, then you have every chance of promotion this season.

Someone also commented on our no.3- damion stewart- he's not a 'regular' but with fitz hall out tonight, he had to start- he is crap!

I thought Q.P.R. overall deserved the win, i was surprised that we went into the interval with a 2-1 lead as they could have been out of sight by then.

Ledesma looks different gwavy, although he was given far too much space out on the right by Cassell. Parejo also played well when he decided to stay on his feet (i guess he's not use to the U.K weather yet!?)

McNamee had ANOTHER good game and i also though Morrison did well (must keep hold of him and not sell him on at the first sign of a bid!)

I'll probably get some stick off my old man on Thursday when i go round my mum and dads as he's a Q.P.R fan......he'll be giving it the "der der der der HOOPS!" like he usually does.

best game at county ground for a while, cracking entertainment. QPR looked very good, but we held our own, would have loved to have had kanyuka and ifil at the back.

malpas is doing no wrong in my eyes, think back to 12 months ago. jesus christ thank god for fitton and malpas.

at half time nick watkins was behind the burger bars in the drs making sure everything ran smoothly. considering the stand is busier than last year, got served and back to my seat well before the teams came back out. and the samosas are lush. oxo shits on bovril.

Hmm I thought Brez was at fault for one of their goals where he seemed to drop it at the far post and he looked shaky at times not communicating with the defence, at the moment he is not looking the fanstatic keeper he thinks he is, he was also dodgy on crosses at times coming for them and not getting them....he needs to improve

Morrison mostly looked fine but unfortunetly lost the ball through being a bit sloppy and it lead to goal No 3 for them...but he certainly looks a good prospect

Mcnamee was good but he needs to learn how to play when he is either being marked tightly or have 2 players on him, at time I thought he gave up 2 easily he needs to attempt the run so it leaves space for other to move into with the opposition worrying about him.

Overall I thought we played well though and certainly worried QPR which must give us confidence, I think the next 3 or 4 games will give us an idea of what sort of season we can have as we have mixed bag of opposition, hopefully we can sort our away form this season and then get up the table.

Has anyone else noticed what we're doing when teams double up on McNamee? Last night, when facing two markers, Nalis came over to him, took the ball off him as well as one of the defenders marking him then passed it back to him so he had more space. We did it against Tranmere as well.

We certainly showed glimpses of genuine passing quality - one touch, pass, move stuff which I haven't seen in a long time.

More pluses than negatives... Thought Brezovan was our poorest player if I had to choose. QPR were very, very good going forward - but allowed us, somehow, to score 2 goals in the 1st half.

I have no complaints about our midfield or attack... it's certainly encouraging stuff.

I don't get this Brezovan bashing going on today.  Don't think he was at fault for the goals, think the defence should have reacted quicker to the loose ball.  Yeah he made a mistake with one kick but recovered well by saving at the attackers feet.  Some of his handling was top notch, in difficult conditions.  The same can't be said of the championship keeper Camp, awful kicking, and dropped catches on a couple of occasions.

I can. His positioning was good but there seemed to be very little communication between him and the defenders... I'm not saying drop him - I'm saying work on it... because we will get caught out during the season if it's not sorted.

Paynters goal was brilliant.

Only shame was our start to the second half, just never picked him up. Bit better defensively and we could have turned them over.

Still, they were a good team and it was a great game.

Was it paynter who had that great effort in the first half that Camp tipped over the bar?  He went quiet in places but Paynter had another good game.  As did Cox.

Great game. Agree with most of what has been said already. QPR deserved their win, but we can take a lot of positives from that, mainly our quality attacking play and determination.

Casal needs to be reminded he's a left back. Malpas just make him stand next to vincent in training and learn. AT TIMES YOU NEED TO DEFEND 1ST , PLAY FOOTBALL 2ND.  And stop leaving the best player on the pitch in so much space. (probably the best we'll face all season unless we get one of the real big boys in the FA cup)

That said he did do some good things as well. He really is Quick and a genuine athlete and does not lack footballing ability. His tackling was alright as well. But he realy really needs to work on his positioning and marking and fast.  We'll end up getting murdered away from home with him going AWOL like that at times. I can see why we signed him though, because if you could add a bit of vincent-like discipline and positional sense to his game I think he'd look a really good player.

Didnt think much of Aljofree last night either. Blackstock is a good player but he really struggled at times for me. Thought Morrison was the better of our centre backs.

Oh, quick shout out to Lofty from Eastenders who was in the Executive Box last night!  I thought he was a gooner, maybe his son supports QPR, although they were having a laugh when town went 2-1 up!

Thought Morrison was the better of our centre backs.

I agree - Aljofree wasn't terrible or anything, but Morrison did a decent job.

Casal was drifting was from Ledesma far too much. A few fans behind me were slagging off Nalis most of the 2nd half which I thought was harsh - not his greatest game but when you consider who we've had in that position and how they've played.....

It was by no means a perfect display but it would have been good enough to beat many teams in our division.

Title: Re: Official Swindon Town Vs Queens Park Rangers Mathday Thread
Post by: janaage on Wednesday, August 13, 2008, 08:38:35
Aljofree was wrong side of the man on occasions which allowed QPR to really penetrate our defence.  Morrison made a couple of errors, one of which led to one of their goals.  He'll learn from that though and get better and better.  In the air I thought both centre halves looked good though, won a lot of ball.

Nalis and Timlin both didn't look as good as they did on Saturday but when you consider the standard of midfield they were playing against last night I think that's to be expected.  They'll look much better on Saturday.

fair enough Jan, I'll relent on Brez. I thought he was generally superb, as did my QPR mate, but one kick almost led to a goal, which obviously stuck in my mind.

I'm surprised by the stick Casel's getting. Ok, he was fairly naive at times, but he won't face a better player all season and from what my mate was saying, their no.20 was superb against Barnsley. Casel only joined us last thursday. I think given time he is going to be an exceptional player. He has pace in abundance and once he has a bit of confidence, I think he'l be good for us, much like Comminges grew in stature. And if that means no more Vincent then that's fine by me, his predictable long balls are as boring as Aljofree's mindless hoofs. Aljofree is a good player IMO, just needs to sort his distribution.

At the back to have four decent players vying for two players is very promising. Morrison looked really good last night.

Agree with Casal Juddie, I can't see why he gets stick, okay he's not a conventional full back but rarely does someone get past him.  Once he's used to MM's ways and his team mates I think he'll be better than Miguel.

And I know what you mean about Brez's one crap kick, other than that kick his really improved his distribution I think.

Title: Re: Official Swindon Town Vs Queens Park Rangers Mathday Thread

agree Jan, on reflection when passed the ball Brez's kicking is actually quite good. I remember shitting it when his misplaced kick almost led to a shot on goal last night, so that must be why it stuck in my mind.

And agree totally with Cassel. Very quick and I think he'll be mint.

All in all, if fans are still staying away after the last two games then more fool them. We're playing superb football and so far, so good.

Keep it chaps.

Some guy on 606 was saying how he never goes to Carling cup matches, I did have a wry smile, "you missed a cracker" was my thoughts on that.

Not going to Cheltenham, so looking forward to Colchester already, we do need to sort out the atmosphere though, asap.

Perhaps the Board could offer some season ticket holders a slight reduction to go back in the TE?  Something needs to be done, it's so quiet at the moment.

Dont get me wrong, I'm not saying Casal is shit.  I appreciate he hasnt had long to get to know the lads, and that their number 20 was ace.

Its just at times last night he was very very naive, ie not getting closer to 20 1st half, almost getting caught out on the edge of our box by trying to turn. Not really knowing when to stay in position and when to offer support to the midfield.

I do think that theres a very good league 1 player in there, I just hope it comes out sooner rather than later otherwise he is going to cost us some goals in the meantime.

And the atmoshprere in the town end last night wasnt too bad, mainly in the 1st half.  probablly not that loud to non town enders though as it really wasnt very full.  We tried though.

Could lack of atmosphere be the downfall of the season ticket offer?

As someone mention earlier Casal does look much like the Minge did in his first few games - out of position and out of sync with the rest of the defence. He needs to be taught and to get used to his centre back partners. But the advantage that Casal has is that is he six years younger than Comminges.

qpr had the best midfield we'll come up against all season; not surprised that timlin and nalis weren't at the top of their game.

casal gets too close to the centre-back at times, not helped by the fact macca isn't brilliant at tracking back - he's very exposed. not to mention he was up against the best player on the pitch in ledesma...

aljofree was pretty poor as well.

very impressed with us though.

Where you sat in front of me and Ralph?

Cracking game, I thought we played well, but just lacked that little bit more.

Aljofree stop booting it forward!

Ledesma was left on his own on the right a lot, should have been man marked really. Morrison was good, and Paynter worked his ass off i thought. Macca was quality.

The pasty and Oxo were still shit mind.

Last night had a better atmosphere with the DR stand being noisier, as the team get's better the atmosphere will improve imho

Brez's main problem at the moment is communication - him and the defence at times were on different wave lengths, and what about last night where the ball squeezed in past him at the far post and the cross he came out for that he should have caught but ended up in no mans land.....

Can anyone else remember Paul Bodin's first half a dozen games for Town after Macari signed him from Newport.

Fucking shocking he looked. When Ossie sold Phil King and told the Adver that he wasn't looking to replace him because Bodin was "technically the better player" we all laughed our heads off.

That's right Lumps.

However  there was also Kim Heiselberg.....

I think Casal has the physical attributes, including pace, which you can't coach. Lets hope that he will pick up the positional side quickly. If not I'm still happy with the stability offered by Vincent, at least until McNamee also steps up the defensive side of his game.

Oh yes the man who bought us a back four that included Drysdale and Mark Seagraves at a cost of getting on for half a million. Mind you that's nothing to the £600,000 (yes £600,000!) that Gorman spent on the other full back, the truly ordinary Mark Robinson.
