Steve Harper is a qualified professional referee as well.

Just thought I 'd throw that fact in there

Steve Harper's career is ridiculous. He averages something like 8 games a season for Newcastle since he became a pro in 1993.

I'm sure the people with Geordie tendencies would love him here but he'd be a complete waste of our wage structure in my opinion. Same with David James and any other high profile OAP looking for a final pay day.

So what sort of keeper do people genuinely want to go for:

1. Smith-esque - solid enough, experienced, without feasibly challenging Foderingham.

2. Promsing youngster - would seem pointless given Foderingham's age and lack of an experienced keeper to learn from

3. Genuine competition - i.e. McCormick standard (but not necessarily him, given all that...)

I'd chose option 1 every time but not on James/Harper wages. In fact, Smith would have done just fine. If Fods gets a prolonged injury, in comes someone in his mould on loan...

4. Bedwell, we had a few good young keepers the past couple of years. Mark Scott isnt to bad, but wasn't given a chance.

Smith was given plenty of chances....did ok but no more.

OPEN YOUR EYES FOLKS....Harper wouldn't come here on Premiership wages....he would come here as cover with a view to continuing his coaching and managerial badges.

Oh and 19 years in the Prem means any good young keepers signed would get TOP  coaching.

We have a goalkeeper coach so why should we get a 37 year old goalkeeper to do a job that's already being adequately done? The guy at Newcastle would still command a decent wage whether it's "Premier League" or not.

Although a potential risk, I'm happy to have Foderingham to be our cemented No.1 with Bedwell/Lanzano on the bench. The loan market is there if need be.

Because this coach would be better than Lanzano and Bedwell?....and he would be on wages within the wage structure for sure.

Di Canio will be loyal to Domenico Dorado.

Steve Harper is better than Lanzano and Bedwell but they are contracted Swindon players. As long as Lanzano is still picking up wages, I think they should keep things as they are. Having four pro keepers is a tad excessive when we expect Foderingham to start.

Agreed....but my feeling is if Fods gets injured then Bedwell and Lanzano isnt up to it on a long run of games...maybe one or two and the odd cover for cup.

We defo need a good number two....though to be honest i would be amazed if Harper joined us.

Many of us liked Smith as backup.....the man who matters didn't.

I think Lanzano will be released with a pay off as he isn't even Blue Square level.

I personally feel we will have Bedwell on the bench and as Rich states dip into the loan market if anything happens to Wes. Paolo won't put another coach on the wage bill especially if its doubling up on goalkeeping coaches.
