So once again Power proves he isn’t afraid to splash the cash (contract wise) on young player with potential

So that’s at least 7 of last years starting line up here for this season then, with a keeper and a striker we’d actually have a half competitive starting XI already.

As it stands then we have
CB Dion Conroy
CB Mathieu Baudry
CB Tom Broadbent
RB Paul Caddis
LB Rob Hunt
LB Zeki Fryers
CM Michael Doughty
CM Jordan Lyden
CM Matty Palmer
LW Hallam Hope
RW Daillang Jaiyesimi

Probable renewals
CM Danny Rose
LW Ellis Iandolo
RW Lloyd Isgrove
LB Dion Donohue

Possible renewals
RW Kaiyne Woolery
CM Anthony Grant

If they all renew then we will be still in a fairly strong position albeit with us needing 2 keepers and probably a couple of strikers.

Just to put our positive position into context only 1 of our best starting XI last season was at the club the season before. (Doughty)

I'll take that, right now.  Means the recruitment can really focus in on certain positions.  Although a return for Benda would be great too.  Unless he's already in Blackpool with Grant, Isgrove and Messi.

Yup. Fair play to all for getting this done.

I imagine we needed to offer a three year deal to fend off other teams, he was highly sought after apparently.

Thrilled with this signing.

After seeing that 3yr deal go in for Jaiyesimi, for whatever reason (possibly long deal, investment and young player) I do think even more so that we will go after the Fake Ginger Pele from West Brom and chuck a 3yr jobby at him as well.

Is Morton a free agent? At 20 years old and an impressive first Football League loan spell under his belt I doubt he will be leaving on a perm unless it’s for a few quid.

A season long loan however  Hmmm

Watch it, you don’t go building a team for L1 just by buying good L2 players (according to some on here). Not a single chance he could make the (marginal) step up. None at all.

He has another year I think, but considering Baggies now sealing auto, he's likely not going to get a look in there. Indeed a season long would be the initial thought.

Only speculating but could there not be a potential case of Northampton thinking he would choose them (on SLL)? Like us a la Yates and we go in (a la Blackpool) and offer to sign him on a perm with not only security but guaranteed game time?

I think Baggies are offering an extension/contract renewal but that dynamic must've have changed a little with them now a Prem club again so that could be damage limitation so he doesn't go on a free next year, will help them squeeze a bit more out of him in terms of any potential transfer.

If he does sign an extension there then he will most likely be loaned out though and a L1 club would be the next natural step. At 20 he will certainly want regular game time. There would be no harm in us putting in a transfer bid either though, as at this moment in time he is never going to pull on a shirt for the WBA first team.

The below is from Brum Mail but there is very little substance except opening contract talks and FGP is open to another loan. I reckon he could be swayed with a perm move elsewhere. Especially at the right kind of project. https://www.birminghammail.co.uk/sport/football/transfer-news/west-brom-transfer-news-morton-18651987

I guess being a little miffed at players who had short-term success here, choosing a club in the same league as Town would bring an initial ceding of their ability. Think this is quite natural, many don't like rejection so a justification is used and many will be guilty of this. However it is true and fair to say that although those players did do it at L2 (I'm talking more Yates than Keshi), there is certainly no guarantee of them doing it again.

There is every chance of them kicking on too. As you allude to, the step up to L1 is not as big a gulf as L1 is to Champ and I would personally say they can be good mid-table L1 players. Nearly all of last season's squad would be capable of achieving mid-table L1.

Maybe though, just maybe if we set our aspirations in line with Wellens, we might just see that he is looking to assemble a squad capable of more than that? I believe he is with 3 year deals being banded around in a calculated fashion, it also nods to progression further up the division and the squad wanted is one that will be together for more than just one season. It's a very positive sign - especially in an environment such as this.

The transfer window is officially open now, I wonder if we will see any new signings as it swings open.

My guess is that Dion Donohue will be the first announced.

Now we need to find those 2 keepers and a couple of out and out strikers, probably 3 of these positions will be filled by loanees from higher tier clubs I would imagine.

Doubt it from what Wellens said a few weeks back. He said then (think it was BBC Wilts, may have been Rich's pod) that with Dion they'd get him in training for a few weeks in pre-season and see how he behaved himself before making a decision on signing him. Can't remember the exact wording but it was something along the lines of proving himself (in terms of behaviour rather than ability) and seemed to imply that any signing would be late in terms of pre-season or even at start of the season proper

He did indeed say that. Depends on demand though, if Donohue has multiple offers then that stance will have to change if Wellens wants him
