Swindon's manager has made no secret of his desire to give Jon-Paul McGovern some competition on the right flank next season.
And so he has given two players, from either end of the football spectrum, the chance to impress during the next few weeks.
The Advertiser understands that Malpas made his move for the 21-year-old United player, who is out of contract at the Premier League champions, earlier this week but faces competition from another Football League side who have already offered him a contract.
Town's boss refused to name his target, but the Swindon Advertiser understands the player has made a handful of appearances for United in cup competitions, as well as gaining experience from two loan spells in the Championship in 2006/07, and time in League One last season.
"There's one or two players who we've been trying to encourage to come in and do a pre-season here," revealed Malpas.

"So they're going to decide in the next couple of days if that's what they want to do or if they want to go elsewhere.
"One has got an offer from another club and so he might take that up, but we're hopeful that he will come here for pre-season. He played at Manchester United. I saw him at the end of the season and he can play right back, right midfield and central midfield."
While Malpas has gone to the best side in the country for one of his targets, he has delved into non-league football for the second player, giving Eastleigh's Mark Marshall the chance to try and earn a County Ground contract.
The 21-year-old moved to Hampshire in January from Grays Athletic, and is contracted at the Blue Square South side until the end of the forthcoming season.
Jamaican-born, Marshall began his career with Yeovil and had trials with Reading last season.
His explosive pace, crossing ability and good set-piece delivery have made him a favourite with the Eastleigh fans, and Malpas said: "The other lad is an out-and-out wide right player.
"He's at Eastleigh - he's a young boy and is one for the future. I've got the nod for him so I've invited him to pre-season."
