You're not usually on here until 1am  :)

Truth is, I usually end up staying up late editing work as well as working on other projects (not enough hours in the day ey?), so find myself catching up on the TEF spoutings later on. Was planned to be on a location recce this morning but it shitted (no pun) it down and got rescheduled, so I find myself embroiled in the daily TEFferings here.

I appreciate your investment in my movements (both bowel and online) though  ;)

Concerned that Caddis may be a spent force at L1 level, hoping that Donohue signs so Hunt can get back over to the right if needed.

Some players are just slow starters to get fit in the league. Joe Devera was another.

I think he'll be fine. He was one of the stand outs for me in the latter stages of last season

Title: Re: Scott Twine

Caddis looked unfit against Coventry, its still early in pre season (some teams arent back yet even) he is still solid.

I prefer Hunt at RB and would prefer Donohue at LB but I don't think Caddis will let us down when picked.

His dad was only born in the 60s so it could even be his grandad? although they are more of a cricketing family.

Twine does have the build of a modern cricketer to be fair. More an extra cover or third man type fielder. Possibly a seamer too.

I heard yesterday on Facebook that Conroy’s injury status is a lot worse than the club are letting on, I hope this is not the case as another long-term injury lay off could be bad news for his future.

Facebook you say.... must be true.

I do think they said it was a couple of weeks before he started training (so no change to if match play).

But lately it's been a 'don't know when he's back' so may need another defender as Broadbent also crocked.

regardless, Conroy isn't going to be playing in September at least

Some of it is true some of it is not, same on here I am sure.

My biggest issue with people saying they saw it on FB is that FB is a platform not a source. It’s like saying “I saw it on a website”. What’s the source? Who said it? The club? That wankfest of a fan group? The mental Cheltenham fan?

Far to analytical for me, all just places where people talk rubbish about football, end of story.

Just read back and I was a little harsh. I despise Facebook, for a variety of personal and professional reasons.

We all obsess about titbits we read everywhere, and I’d be a hypocrite to slag you off for that.

Fingers crossed on this occasion what you read isn’t true.

My Dad taught at Moredon School, where Ernie Hunt had been a pupil.  When Ernie was transferred to Coventry City, a school trip was organised - Ernie would give a guided tour round Coventry’s ground, and then we all had seats in the Directors’ Box to watch the game (can’t remember who the opposition was).  Ernie capped our day off nicely by getting sent off!  Ah, memories!!

Apparently, Ernie Hunt's dad was also called Ernie, and he called his son Roger. Mind you playing a Roger Hunt in school's football is not to be sniffed at either. Is Rob Hunt a relative ? Bet the old kit man calls him Ernie, or Roger.

Post by: theakston2k on Monday, August 24, 2020, 09:41:03
I’m not best pleased with the club’s decision to only offer a mail order service so close to the start of the season, IMO they should have opened the club shop by now, or at least offered a click and collect service for those who can’t abide their neighbours.
Who really cares? More important things to worry about than opening the club shop to cater for 4 or 5 people a day with nothing better do. It's not like opening it is going to see thousands rush to visit!

Great memories for you Geoff.  I played for a Borough League side against STFC under- eighteen team in about 1958 I suppose. We were thrashed of course but highly honoured!  Did you ref in that period or a bit later?  I played for Sanford YC in the Wiltshire League in 1963, and we were runners-up to Bemerton.

I would imagine there would be a few more than 5 customers in a day, I am sure there are quite a lot of fans who would be in to buy shirts and sort out season tickets etc, and there is always 'more important things to worry about' in both football and in life, but this does mean that life does not go on and that people cannot voice an opinion.

You have voiced your opinion. Theakston disagreed and voiced his. That's how a forum works mate.

The staff have been furloughed for god knows how long so have months of catching up to do including probably restocking the shop. They are probably still on restricted hours/part time and any opening of the club shop would have to bring in more income than it costs to open (remember there would need COVID risk assessments, changes made etc) so for a few people whats the point? If you can buy it online then whats the problem?  Alternatively I'm sure people can live without some merch for a little while longer.
As for your little tantrum at the end, I don't think you've figured out how a forum works. You don't open a thread about something and then restrict all your posts about any topic to that thread...

To be honest anyone with the username 'STFCNo1Fan' comes across as a bit of twat and you aren't doing much to reduce that opinion. Do you actually believe you are the number 1 fan?

the meaning of Twine of course being that; Twine is a strong thread, light string or cord composed of two or more thinner strands twisted, and then twisted together (plied).

So the thinner strands of random items are twisted together to make a strong thread!!

If the government are going to allow a percentage of fans into the grounds for the start of the season, I hope they make the decision soon as there is not much time left for the club to make the necessary arrangements.

The Government may well allow an capacity of say 20% or 25%, why do you think this is so outrageous?

I’m more getting at you posting on a variety of subjects all in the same thread.
There are numerous threads on here that discuss all of the things you are mentioning yet you stick them all in a thread that’s titled ‘Scott Twine’

Would it resolve aged members' angstiness if a mod simply retitled this thread "The Collected Thoughts of STFCNo1Fan"? That way, his initiation into the TEF might be treated a little more kindly.

On reflection, he might be onto something with thread classification by author. Like a bookshop, if we knew which thread contained all the ravings of each TEFer, it would save a lot of time and argument filtering past the known nutjobs.

Pff, old people.  ::)

I'm going to be radical and bring this back on topic.

I've just seen the highlights of Melksham game on melksham's you tube channel https://t.co/ahNs0UmKeA?amp=1.

Twine was the only player that seemed to be an attacking threat for us, involved in almost every attack.  He scored, hit the bar with a screamer, set up both offside goals etc.

It's highlights so no idea if he tracked back or misplaced loads of passes but for earlier posters to say he did nothing in that game is harsh.  Also who cares if your only attacking threat does nothing else other than attack and score goals.

He may not be ready for a regular league 1 start but seems a much improved player to me and has definitely worked hard on his shooting over the last 6 months.  He's earned a place in the squad for sure.

Good work Kev...on the one hand you're quite an annoying prick. On the the other, I like you...a lot...I have time for you (don't mean that to sound patronising)...life's strange innit?

That's appreciated. I'm aware of how annoying I can be, my family ensure me of it regularly :D

But thanks and not patronising at all. As they say, 'nowt so queer as folk'  :)

It was interesting to put a face to the oft prolix posts

Always worth remembering that any face you see online is not necessarily the one that you might see in real life ;) I've a portfolio full of potential Russian and American wives but none of them look like their pictures  :eekout:

My first eternalism having my poetry quoted by Benny Sponge  :)

For anyone who wants to watch it, the full and without technical issues version can be viewed on the book of Faces.

I'm last on the bill but there really are some great performers on it. Possibly something a bit different how some of you might spend a rainy Friday evening. Enjoy

If you look on the TEF, I actually wrote the first draft on the TEF  :D It was after JQ was feeling a bit pissed off and I wrote a reflective response...in the form of said poem. So in some way EB, I was but it was also a wider reflection. Especially regarding the government's "new normal" and creating "bubbles", meaning that cliques could be a lot more exclusive and enhanced by the 'you can't sit with us' types.

I then took that, looking from the outside (ironically) of the whole "clique theory" to bring it round that we're all in a clique of sorts, even if we don't realise it :)

you can't knock him atm. purely looking at him from goals scored which as a striker always helps! i dont think he should be in our 11 or even on the bench based on previous but he is proving hard to ignore and maybe he can prove everyone wrong. there is nothing better than seeing a home grown player turn good and would absolutely love it if it happened for him.

At a league 2 or national league club on loan, he’s going to be 7th or 8th choice here. Needs to prove himself somewhere better than Chippenham first.

If you get goals, even in largely pointless friendlies, you should get an opportunity in the first team.

Friendlies are difficult to gage because the line ups and quality vary so much.

However, you can only score against the teams you are playing. As Twine has continually found the back of the net he should certainly be in contention. I means what’s the worst that could happen? He’s not up it to?!

Agreed.  The interesting point is that 2 players who are largely written off by a number of supporters have scored a few goals.  i have no views on Twine or Hope (i have only seen the latter play twice) but i think that they should be given a 'fair crack of the whip'.

To be fair both have been playing in the second string team. DJ, Smith and Payne are clearly first choice of the players we have at present. In Hope’s case he has been injured in preseason and he achieved more in the month or 2 he was here than Twine has in 5 years so would put him and J Smith ahead in the pecking order. I just don’t see where Twine is going to get the minutes to either show he is good enough or develop.

The quality of the opposition you are scoring against might be more relevant than whether you are doing it for the firsts or the seconds.

Which means he’s basically been scoring against under 23 and non league teams. I just think he needs a loan at a decent level, he’s down the pecking order and being in and out of match day squads isn’t going show whether he can cut it or help him develop IMO.

I don't fundamentally disagree with that at all.  That said, a minor observation might be that I don't recall others banging in multiple goals in same the matches and against the same opposition (I don't have the results/scorers to hand and my be wrong on that).

I am sure that the management team have got this covered and it will be interesting to see what happens.

Let's go back to the 80's abolish the under 23's stick with a youth team, reinstate the football combination league where you get reserve games almost every week against good opposition then whoever is in or out of form can swap accordingly

It would also mean that fans have a chance to watch and assess the players on the fringes of the first team.

I went to many games in the late 70's against the likes of Arsenal,Chelsea, Spurs, West Ham etc who always had named players either out of form or coming back from injury

Dossevi looked a world beater in friendlies, transpired he didn’t even know the offside rule. I ignore scorers and largely results in friendlies as the seasoned pro’s pace themselves and don’t go full pelt so aren’t really indicative.

All good points. Not sure everyone on this forum takes the same view on friendlies.  I seem to recall there was a great deal of euphoria after the match up between champions of leagues one and two.

Should Twine start - no.  Should he get a chance as a sub - probably yes.  However, Hope should be in the frame for a starting spot whilst he is still with the club.

Imagine the uproar if we didn’t sign him after his scoring exploits in pre season though.

Surely in that situation you take the gamble.

But the first XI was clearly the team that played City, so who do you drop from that as they all did well according to Wellens. Sounds like J Smith is the one knocking on the door from what Wellens said on TTOT. Twine isn’t a new player, he’s a known quantity and in the 5 years since his debut Twine has done the square root of fuck all, he needs to go somewhere on loan and get a run of games to see if he can cut it and I can’t see him getting that here.

We don't have an under 23s, so nothing to abolish :)

As a side note can I register my disgust that this thread has been hijacked and is now being used to discuss Scott Twine. It's like spitting on the memory of No1Fan when his account is still warm. Have you people no respect?

I haven’t suggested we drop anyone for Twine. You’ve taken the point to the extreme.

I think a lot of us, like you still do - thought Twine was done here. He might well have been if it wasn’t for the amount of attacking players we lost.

Either way but all accounts he’s had a decent pre-season. That should at least make Wellens think twice about him, maybe a place in the squad. Maybe a start on the cup games we aren’t taking as seriously as the league.

No one is suggesting we give him the #9 shirt and build the entire team around him are they? Just that he may have done enough in pre-season to give Wellens something to think about.

Take that up with them on Twitter then. Rather than strongly disagreeing with someone’s opinion on Twitter in the relevant TEF thread were people don’t hold the over the top opinion you are disagreeing with.

I have seen people on Twitter suggesting the earth is flat & this corona virus is a hoax. Which isn’t really relevant to any earth or corona related discussion on his forum, if no one this site has the same opinion as ‘someone on Twitter’

Yep, lad can only keep on keeping on. This is his real apprenticeship and it seems he's making sure it counts when it matters.

Talking of Twine based songs, if he did make a return and happened to score then we should use the Kiwi tune by Dave Dobbyn & The Herbs - Slice of Heaven. Instead of singing  "slice of heaven" we should sing "splice of heaven".

Plus it's a fuckin awesome tune, especially for sports. Quite relevant lyrics for the boy Scott too. Maybe something like this...

"Her love shines over my horizon, she's a slice of heaven (slice of heaven).
Warm moonlight over my horizon, she's a slice of heaven..."

change to

"Our love shines over his horizon, Twine's a splice of heaven (splice of heaven).
We'll moonrake over your horizon, Twine's a splice of heaven..."

Nicely taken goal hit with some power, now do it consistantly and we will see what happens.

As for Cambridge, OMG their finishing was absolutely dreadful, they should have won that by 3 or 4 clear goals.

Twine also voted MoM for that game with 85% of the votes online.

Quote from: Newport Fans
Twine for me, and not just for the winning goal. Demonstrated decent passing abilities, and nice to see a player running at the opposition with the ball, Although he may have overdone it a little at times and got dispossessed refreshing to see such positivity.

Close run for me between Shephard and Twine but Twine gets it for the goal and always looking to make things happen.
