Title: Carlisle v Swindon pre match chat and matchday thread
Post by: 4D on Wednesday, February 5, 2020, 16:39:19
Their last home league defeat was when Plymuff beat em 3-0 in January. Surely we should emulate that?

Carlisle 0-4 Swindon Att: 5,488 (731 of us)

Their form has improved a little but their defence has been like a leaky sieve all season.  With our current best XI being available, we look like we have a real opportunity to get a positive result in this one.  We have also not feared long away trips on weekends in recent times, so I think we'll get a 2-1 win.

Will take a point, although I think we can take 3.

Hope and Yates to score against their old club.

Carlisle should setup in a way that we could take advantage of.

Should be goals.

1-2 with 632 travelling. Hope and Yates to get pelters all game!

I'm probably going so undoubtedly a defeat, although taking note of my recent inability to pick a winner for love nor money I may have a bet on a Carlisle win to try and offset things.

With the team we have assembled now we should be winning games like this. The weather is bound to be crap and the pitch will probably be shite, but I reckon we will come out on top, grinding out a 2-0 win, with 700 odd town fans to witness the spectacle.

We could do with keeping a few more clean sheets as we did in the November and December 8 wins in row.

Maybe if Zeki Fryers is fully fit that might be the difference resuming the partnership with Baudry.

In the context of looking at getting 26 points from our remaining 15 games, making 85 total ( I think 84 or 85 will be enough for top 3)  I look at these two away games, tomorrow and Tuesday, and think a return of two or more points from the two games combined would be fine. To suggest tomorrow is a “must win” is hyperbole.
On paper tomorrow looks the easier of the two, but things often pan out differently. As others have pointed out, the weather forecast suggests that conditions will be tricky tomorrow. Wellens also indicated that with a bigger squad /more options he could rotate players - it may be some are rested with Tuesday in mind if RW feels Tuesday’s is the tougher opponent.
I think we will win tomorrow, but would take a draw.

Oh thats move earlier in the day than the BBC were suggesting, so many games over the last couple of seasons have been ruined by strong wind (no not Flash's arse with 4D!) its a proper match leveller.

Yep, so we are undoubtedly gonna lose! May actually be sitting on my tod as whilst going with FiL his Carlisle supporting mate is also coming with us so he will have to decide which end he wants to sit in, and I imagine the view will be much better for the home fans rather than hanging off the end oif the pitch with the away lot!

Its Horlocks local game only about 40 to 50 miles up the road isnt it?

Bout 60 miles up the road, although it will be the train taking the strain tomorrow. Morecambe is closer and if we stay in this godforsaken league next season Barrow would be even better!

Tongue in cheek, I am sure he didn't attend Morecambe away the other season? Could do with with Flash's arse up there to counteract the storm  :)

Went to Morecambe in the PdC season when we won (may even be the last time I have seen us win!), not made Morecambe for the last couple of years as its always fallen on dates when we are away, hopefully make it this year albeit its a twat on public transport!

As already said by many, it's clearly not a must-win game but Carlisle are precisely the type of opponent we did well against in 2019 and need to resume beating away in order to maintain the gap to 4th place.

Wind and pitch may fuck us but I'm still confident.

1-2  Yates & Doughty.

Many saying something doesn't make it so, any more than saying we did well v Carlisle in 2019 does when we lost 2-1 at Brunton. In my book losing 2-1 means we didn't do well.

We seem to play quite well in inclement conditions (Crawley away, Crewe and Exeter at home), so the wind shouldn't be a factor. What we can't cope with is ploughed field pitches and set pieces against teams of giants.

Carlisle manager Beech getting the excuses in early -

“They’re League One players on League One budgets.”

“I know managers will play it down but they have got a massive budget, because I do know of some of the players they’ve recruited – I did have a little knock on the door myself and didn’t get them.”

“The pressure is really on them to make sure they can back up their investment and get promoted. On us is the challenge to say ok, we’re taking on the best in the league".

“They’re backed up with a right-footed left-back [Rob Hunt] and [Paul] Caddis with his experience. People would think, ‘We can get at him, run at him, he’s getting old’ but it doesn’t work like that, they use their bodies well, get help off the linesmen and referees, talk them in, almost referee the games – young referees get sucked into the way they go about that, they’re very clever".

You lot leave our Chrissy alone you bullys, he's doing 'quite alright' thank you very much.  :D
Anyway on to tomorrow, i noticed a message up above stating the weather and the terrible pitch. Apparently the weather is going to be a bit blustery but otherwise fine and dry, he also mentioned the 'possible' terrible pitch. Come on folks we are not Newport or Tranmere, we are Carlisle and our pitch is one of the finest in the land, infact it's as good as most premiershit pitches.
On to the game, it will be interesting to see Halam back, he will probably get a mixed reaction from our lot, he kind of split the support base right down the middle, some loved him and some thought he was very average and a bit lazy/disinterested. I liked Halam always tried his best, and always 'put in a shift' as the say, and as I got to know him personally, then you couldn't wish for a nicer guy, although after 5 years here then I did think it was time for him to move on.
Yates is the one we fear, an absolute pest to opposition defenders, and Mr Webster and Mr Haydon are going to have to be at their best to snuff him out.
As far as our team is concerned...Beech has moulded them into a reasonable outfit, he seems to have plugged the holes in defence, stopped the fannying around at the back, made them fitter and stronger and given them a 'never say die attitude', what more could you ask for as a fan?
Not sure whether were good enough to take you lot on, but then we never expected to win 4-0 at your spot not that long ago  :D.
I'll be happy with a draw, good luck after tomorrow of course.

Yea thanks, terrible time for the folks who lived around the ground, would you believe that some folk only moved back in to their homes recently, there were 2,000 homes affected?? It was completely heartbreaking to see everybody possessions simply dumped on to the streets, it was like (I imagine) a bombed town.

74/75 it was, Chelsea away won 2-0, Middlesbro away won 2-1, Spurs at Home won 1-0   ahhhhhhhhhhh happy days.  :pint:  :D
Didn't last long of course and I doubt it will ever happen again, but the football world stood up and took notice of us for once.

As a matter of interest I was working next door in the Rugby Club at the time of the floods, (I was club manager there) and I was first in when the water subsided, it had been 8 feet deep, everything had been destroyed, computers, furniture, carpets, bars the lot everything went into skips, and the weirdest thing............the Xmas trees still had ALL their decorations on and looked like they hadn't been touched, really weird.  :hmmm:

Memory's playing tricks, I think, Jimmy. I think you must be thinking of 83/84 (season of our lowest ever League position as Reg likes to regularly remind us), when we drew 1-1 at Carlisle and won the replay 3-1.

Lost 2-1 at home to Blackburn in the next round.......goalscorer - Jimmy Quinn ☺

I went to the "flooded" game. Sheesh how you ever got that game on i have no idea. Went to bed the night before with photos of half the pitch under water. Left home at 6am on a wing and a prayer. Pulled into Carlisle at 12.15 and still didnt know if on or off. Got to the ground and well.. That below ground level car park was up to the pavement (about 6 foot of water) Game on and the pitch was actually pretty good. Cracking night out after and the 8.30 train back home Sunday. I like going to Carlisle.

Well they have ....sort of???
There has been extra floodbanks built which can contain 'one river'. Unfortunately Carlisle is built on 3 rivers, The Eden, The Caldew and the Pettril, but it will take just one of those to burst its banks and then flow into the others causing a domino affect, so all the more likely it can and probably will happen again, sadly.

That's always the worry and god knows how they sell those houses

Most of the houses have been sold, some have been 'turned upside down' so to speak, bedrooms on the ground floor and kitchen and living rooms in the old bedrooms upstairs, which limits the damage if it floods again. There is also a lot of 'student lets' because landlords have got them cheap.

You've got no Hope, we've got one he's called Ha-llam,
You've got no Hope, that why you'll score no goals,
He is strong, when playing off the shoul-der,
He'll raise us up, towards the Premier League.

Can we have chants along the lines of “You’ve got no Hope”?

Thank you.

This is all your fault.

Pretty fair comments really - I've said all season that we look like a L1 side and it can't come cheap. And Caddis and Grant (and others I'm sure) are masters in the dark art of shithousery.

I assume the curse of the ex-player works for us as well as against us so...

0-2 Hope, Yates (Doyle's long barren run to continue  ;))

Does sound a bit like it. That said, how many times over the years have we been on the receiving end of teams like we’re supposed to be as described by their manager?
Never give a sucker an even break...

Always good to hear the views of opposing fans as long as they are not absolute idiots like PNEThor who had some form of serious mental issue.

Should be a decent game, you have made a few signings in the window and got rid of a few too like the massively under performing Carroll who looked half decent with us but a walking red card.

A few good memories of games with your lads over the years, had a few visits up to the Northern outpost, was up there ironically for the first game at the CG this season, bad timing!

The special train in 84 was a great day out, leaving Swindon at 7 and arriving in Carlisle at 2 and having a massive police escort to the ground, about 1,000 of us in the rain for a hard fought 1-1 draw and then beating you in the replay as you were doing well in Div 2 back then and us in Div 4 but we were at our lowest ebb and on the brink of our upturn then under Macari a couple of seasons after.

Glad the pitch is sorted as we have faced a fair few teams with shocking pitches, although your comment about having one of the finest pitches in the land, you haven't seen the County Ground pitch then ;)

Anyway please post your thoughts after the game and ignore any insulting remarks you may get, its great to hear the views of us and your team afterwards, so few fans do that now, it used to be common, now its just insult after insult, honest fans of other teams always welcome!

Roadworks near the ground which is causing traffic issues so best parking in Botcherby I think it's called otherwise it'll be a nightmare after the game!

Pre match waitin' for the wind in the William Rufus.
Sunny and ok in the Border City at the moment.

I guess border reiving will become all the rage around here again when the Scots go their own way.
So, first prize of an ill gotten heifer to anyone who can name the two former Town managers who also played for Carlisle.

They've like a good siege or two over the years here.
Hopefully the locals will be suitably impressed when their football team finds itself surrounded by Anthony Grant later on.

Hope the trains will still be working this evening and safe journey to those heading home in their horseless carriages.
In the meantime there is drinking to be done.

According to Wellens in the week we have special dispensation to not have to include one.

Title: Re: Carlisle v Swindon pre match chat and matchday thread
Post by: Peter Venkman on Saturday, February 8, 2020, 14:25:46
From the FL.

Quote
English Football League clubs will have to name at least one "club-developed" player in their matchday squads from the start of the 2018-19 season. A club-developed player is defined as one who has been registered to the club for at least a year before the end of his under-19 season.

Wellens said the FL have allowed us not to have to comply with that for whatever reason he said about our selling of young players.

We certainly have no player in that squad that qualifies as that.

Title: Re: Carlisle v Swindon pre match chat and matchday thread
Post by: Peter Venkman on Saturday, February 8, 2020, 14:33:33
I see Carlisles "best form" striker Kayode on loan to them from Rotherham since deadline day is not fit to play today. Scored 2 in 3 games.

From their forum.

Quote
Not much chance of us out scoring them with that line up, set up to contain them. Shame really as we have looked good going forward recently.

Swindon have a Benda in the nets so should have two limp wrists so possibly not a good shot-stopper!

I know the last was a joke post, but how wrong is he?!

I know we have dispensation but I thought that was on the premise of only naming 6 and not 7...otherwise defeats the object. We already have an unfair advantage, what with a purpose built wind tunnel, a,sugar daddy owner and now this 😉

The dispensation is the reason we don't have to name 1 DP in the squad, without dispensation then we would have to leave a space free on the bench.

The ref is giving them almost everything, Doughty can't tackle to save his life.

DJ, Yates, Doyle, Grant, Benda, Caddis, Hunt, REG all having good games, Doughty very hit and miss should be better with the wind. Hope a passenger for 99% of the game so far, missed a good chance where he tried to be too flash with his shot instead of doing the easy thing. Fryers made one good interception but every pass has been wayward so far.

Can someone just turn the fucking wind machine off that must be in the Irish Sea?

Pretty much every game since September has been played in either a gale or with the rain pelting down.

Horrible game of football, neither team did much of note, a couple of chances each that were not taken.  Stick the point in the bag and take it home.

‘Swindon are a brutal team in fairness, I didn't expect them to be so physical. They're your typical horrible southern team, full of those dirty, niggly little kicks on our players. Streamed it and haven't read back yet.

Overall, two points dropped but we nearly lost the point at the death.

Passing was too elaborate at times.

Both goals were soft....Brenda has to play the whistle for me...too weak.

Didn't play well enough in the second and a draw was a fair result but they were there for the taking.

Not too grumpy at an away point.

Draw away and win at home and we is up....a title would be a cherry.

Possibly, although look on the bright side, a win today and on Tuesday would have had them right up our arse with a game in hand... it at least keeps them back a bit. Plymuff's defeat also means we can't drop put of the top 3 on Tuesday.

I'm not too worried. We may well lose/draw on Tuesday and possibly lose top spot, but I fully expect us to beat Scunny and Grimsby at home, and we'll pull away from the rest from March. This is our year.

Annoying that result would look a whole lot better if Exeter hadn't (again) scored a late winner, but on balance it's a point away from home and 1/3 of a Williams Win. Win our home games and pick up points away and we're up. That'll do me. Bear in mind the chasing pack will drop points too, as Plymouth, Northampton and Cheltenham did today.

Sounds like a point was all we deserved.

Would have been a good set of results without the 97th min Crewe winner.  As it was still not too bad.  I think that at the end of season that will be 1 point won rather than 2 points dropped.

Get through Northampton (i.e. win or draw) and we are looking good.  And a loss not a disaster.

We are 6-4 to win league but 1-6 to get promotion which seems about right.  Easy to see how one or even two teams might overhaul us but not three.

Obviously not there yet but plenty of reasons to be confident.

Brief thoughts of yesterday as a first time seeing them play in the flesh this season. Probably first time been excited to go to a game since the Di Canio season, after reading good reviews on here, can only assume we had a stinker!

Benda is good with his feet and bright for a keeper (something their keeper was sorely lacking), might have been a foul as couldn't see but play to the whistle, one good save.

Fryers/REG - Fryers passing was crap but possibly just rusty, REG is a proper player, great on the ball (albeit gets your heart rate up when he is dicking their centre forward) and can defend, reckon he will go somewhere in the game and I can say down the pub that I saw his first pro goal. Incidentally the Carlisle fans I travelled back with were most impressed with the quality of our centre halves rather than anyone else.

Hunt/Caddis thought both played well, Caddis (who looks about 50) especially was well up for it second half,  assume we had identified their left back as a weak link as most things went that way.

Midfield, what the bloody hell was going on there. Grant didn't really catch the eye but was efficient, Doughty cannot tackle and whilst he tried some clever balls they didn't pay off, DJ his fucking huge (had always assumed he was  typical little tricky player) great skill but needs to learn that dribbling around their whole team whilst going across the pitch doesn't achieve a great deal (seems to be our version of Sterling in a way) whilst Hope lived up to his Carlisle nickname of Hallam no Hope, after about an hour I had to resort to my phone to see who was our other midfielder was he had been so anonymous.

Up front you can tell Doyle and Yates have class, but with no service and no support they had no hope and just dropped deeper and deeper looking for the ball. I assume we have been much better in this department as on yesterday cannot see how they could have 10 goals between them, let alone 30+

It was fairly obvious from early in the second half that the system wasn't working as there was a massive gap between the midfield and strikers and Carlisle were just mopping everything up in that area, don't recall us ever winning a second ball, Wellens possibly needs to take some of the blame for not changing it but hey ho. He can talk about us creating chances, but we only troubled their keeper once and that from a shot outside the area.

Carlisle were apathetic, long balls (mainly straight to Benda, their keeper must have kicked 5-6 goal kicks straight to Benda first half, I know its windy but not rocket science) no.7 looked quite handy but that was about it. Going up the Carlisle fan we went with (used to be a regular doesnt bother now) said the fans are sick of shit football (reinforced by the fact we met three of his mates in the pub before the game, all old regulars and none came to the game with us choosing instead to go out on the lash in town), they were very quiet and bizarrely seemed to ignore Hope until he got hooked then made a big deal of booing him.

All a bit meh really, but a point is a point. If they could turn up at Morecambe that would be nice.

I know it’s early days, but I can’t see any benefit of having Hope over Woolery. I know he’s scored twice but does very little else. Woolery, whilst frustrating, puts a shift in, decent in the air, is involved somewhere along the line in a lot of our goals and scares defences shitless with his pace.

Tuesday needs an extra body in midfield - Lyden for Hope - and Broadbent is a must against another mega hoofing side.

Same for me, Hope has not impressed me in any game so far even though he has scored 2 goals. Yates is better wide left IMO and only looks comfortable there.

DJ probably has to play and I know he has his haters but even Woolery offers more than Hope for me.

Its still early though and he could come good, a it like Bennett last season when his first 3 games he was useless but improved no end afterwards.

Far too early to say hes not good enough but hes way behind the players we had already at the club.

I'd also say the same about Hope. But it's early days.

Just hope - no pun intended - that Wellens doesn’t feel he has to play him because he wanted to sign him and he cost money.

I thought that too, I hope hes not stubborn about it, every player must earn his place.

As always some comments from Carlisle fans about the game.

Quote
That's a foul on Anderton as the corner came over for their goal.
Also it was a two-footed tackle (studs showing) on McKirdy which first injured him - we didn't even get a free-kick.
Then you have a fairly blatant hand ball which should have seen us have a penalty.
They say decisions go for you when you're top of the league - and today they're correct.

Swindon are a brutal team in fairness, I didn't expect them to be so physical. They're your typical horrible southern team, full of those dirty, niggly little kicks on our players. Saying that though, we've defended quite well - and despite them kicking McKirdy out of the game we haven't let them bully us.

Beech just said Mckirdys shin is a mess from that first tackle ...not even a free kick

I agree Swindon are physical but it’s a game when you need to be-wind blowing in all directions and you need to get stuck in.

both sides seem content with a point

Solid result in the context of the season

Watched the game on the EFL link and to be honest no difference between the sides! but Carlisle are trying to play football on the deck and seem quite comfortable at it HAIL Beech !! THE REVOLUTION IS STARTING!!

Two poor sides. But a points a point.

I’ve never seen as much kicking the ball in the air - and on a windy day!

Considering the horrible windy conditions I thought we were excellent. They started on top first 20 minutes but from then on I thought we competed really well and matched them in every area.

I actually enjoyed the game and what pleased me most was the effort we put in.

For all the chat about Yates, I thought he was rubbish. Goes without saying that Hope was poor too-good trade to exit him

Yates is far better down the middle in my opinion then out wide where he played today. He played his best football for us in the centre forward role..

I mentioned that to the guy beside me, he was on the wing today...never noticed him first half hardly.
Interesting Beech said he'd had to have words with Gethin Jones as he wasn't at it enough and Hope was his man.....but up till 3 weeks they were sharing a car as mates he said.

I thought we did well considering the tough conditions. We stood off them too much in the first 20 minutes but in the second half I thought we looked the better team. One of the reasons we were poor to start with is because we went direct to Alessandra which is not his game, the more we fed him on the floor the better we played.

After a dodgy first 20 minutes or so we did really well in difficult conditions. great fighting spirit in the second half and almost nicked it at the end. Centre backs did well and M Jones played a few telling passes as he played further forward, linking up well with Guy. Patrick did well second half.

Amazed than there were no bookings despite a number of cynical fouls by Swindon ( including two by Hope in a short space of time before he was subbed )

They seem to think we are dirty and cynical in the main, ok then, they obviously havent seen Newport or Lincoln last season!

And if that was them playing some of their best football of the season, wow poor bastards have seen some shit this season.

That was up with probably our worst 3 or 4 performances of the season, we should have buried them when we were on top TBH we always sit back too much when we go a goal up, which frustrates me a lot.

Agree about Hope.
The team needs to be setup to get the best out of Doyle.
Not sure that it's quite there at the moment.
Might be because we seem to have gone a bit more direct in recent games, so lost a bit of control in midfield as a result, but I'd put that down to having to adjust to the conditions more than anything.

Grant brushed past me as the delay repay train was pulling into Euston last night.
He looks a lot smaller in err real life than he does on the pitch if that makes any sense.

Yeah I have stood next to Grant and he looks just normal in size, but on the pitch he looks like a beast, could be thats because of the propensity of players now being very slight and thin athletes, whereas Grant is a solid unit of muscle.

Would that be the Anderton who in the second half when a couple of throws were given by their corner flag ended up taking near the half way line whilst having little love chats with the linesman.

Strangely quiet on their player booting Yates in the head as well.

Btw in terms of officials buggering up, FWIW, that late corner that benda dropped was never a corner. My FiL was stood in the paddock on that side in line with the goal line (it was near the toilet and after 4 pre match points he had 3 visits in the first half alone), it never went out by a Mike and should have been a throw at most.

This should possibly go in the winds me up thread.

Why were we wearing our away shirts, the fact that it was shirts only suggests to me it was not altogether planned, was it because their keeper was in orange?
