It is extremely worrying. However, I do not think there is a direct link between the words of mad politicians and the actions of mad individuals.  Individuals have to take responsibility for themselves - especially in the US context where people choose to own guns.  (Yes, there should be changes in gun laws, and for Farage to start talking about loosening the gun laws here is irresponsible lunacy.)  What these politicians of the right are doing is making the language of hatred and violence (including state-sponsored violence) just humdrum everyday normality.  And that provides the context in which the horror of the weekend takes place.....and ordinary people become less and less shocked each time it happens.

The other way to look at it is that there are still the same amount of wankers and wankiness going on, yet due to social media and everyone having a 4k camera on them we see it on a day to day basis more than we used to.

Might not be a direct link but in exactly the way you describe, the words/actions of the press and politicans act as enablers and motivators for the extreme views which then become extreme actions. Trump's staff spent a good portion of the weekend deleting the many tweets from his Twitter feed in which he had described Hispanic immigrants as "invaders".

Clearly individuals are responsible for their own actions, and there are always going to be people who are unbalanced.

What has happened recently is that some of the guard rails have been removed - Trump hasn't created any more killers than any other President before him, but he has enabled those who have these types of thoughts to feel free to espouse them.  View some comments on places like Breitbart, and while many are law abiding right leaning individuals, you'll have plenty with a lot of sympathy for the El Paso killer, in so far as as "understanding his frustrations".  Plenty of talk about how it's a Civil War, time to take a stand etc.  Add in some readers being more persuadable and readily accessible tools of killing, bingo.

It has always happened, there is no golden age, humans weaknesses are hardly new, we are just making it easier for them.  The 2nd Amendment discussion over here is very odd to an outsider, but you have to understand the history to have any chance of changing it.  Time has moved on, what were "Arms" in the 18th Century were unlikely to cause this type of devastation (the second mass shooting was less than a minute, in 1700's he'd have got one round off and been shot while reloading).  BUT, you are not going to suddenly convince a Nation that s built on populous being able to overthrow unruly masters that it is time to come willingly.

This isn't just about what's going on in the USA, take a look at Africa, Asia and the ME.

I think there's a lot to be said for this. Especially the lower level wankerism that wouldn't make the national news. I live in a small, quiet seaside town (no longer Brighton as my username might suggest). In 3 years I might have seen a bit of litter and some bad driving but that's about it as far as anti-social behaviour is concerned. However, spend a week looking at the posts on the local facebook page and you'd think I lived in Syria. Everyone has the ability to instantly distribute and/or access comment, images and video highlighting all of the negative aspects of society.

Just been to one of the town's buffet restaurants. Were seated near some chavs who got plate after plate of food and each time they went up they didn't eat hardly any of it. Our local reduces prices after 6pm. The staff say they are fed up with people (mostly olds) lingering at 5.30pm ready to pounce. Trouble is they say they pester the staff beforehand saying "I want two of them, one of those, three of them". Fuck me you can't put an order in!

It's as ridiculous to blame an entire generation of people for the perceived failings of some members of that generation as it is to blame an entire racial group. Just as ridiculous is the notion that someone merits respect or deference purely due to having lived longer than someone else. Respect is earned by an individual, but treating others with respect, whatever their age, should be a given. That flips both ways.

Indeed, as an example the house I was bought up in Oxfordshire, my old man bought it off his employer in the early 70's for £4k, using an interest free mortgage obtained from the local council which was from recollection about £8 a month repayment! When we sold in in 2001 it went for about £160k and is now if Zoopla are to be believed worth about £330k!
