Title: Swindon Town V Walsall Official Matchday Thread
Post by: herthab on Saturday, April 17, 2010, 05:46:18
Time for the latest in the recent run of 'Must Win, Most Important Game Of The Season.'

Last time out, Walsall scored 3 away from home yet still ended up losing at Huddersfield. It's not going to be easy.

If Billy and Charlie find their scoring boots we'll win. If, like Colchester and Exeter, they don't, we won't.

3-1 Swindon, with SSP scoring Walsall's late consolation.

Any win will do....1-0 own goal, three points would really put us in the mix.
It really is the big one today.

Stating the obvious but must win today.

I'd start with 3 up top, so we do get an early goal.

I've got a feeling we'll win this, but it'll be a lot closer than it should be. If we better Colchesters result today I think thats our playoff spot pretty much secure! Charlton and Leeds have tough games today as well so 3 points could also put us right back into the automatic promotion mix.

If we better Col U's result we have a confirmed play-off place. We'd be more than 9 points ahead with 3 to play and Saints won't be able to catch us either.

I'd like to see Big Kev back in the team today - think he's better going forward than Darby, so we'd be more of an attacking threat. Think it'll be a close game but as long as we take the lead, we should be fine...

Title: Re: Swindon Town V Walsall Official Matchday Thread
Post by: Jean-Francois is God on Saturday, April 17, 2010, 09:05:51
I am going to go for a 2-1 Town win, Austin to put us 1 up before Walsall get back on level terms.  Chasing the game Wilson throw's Pericard on and he grabs the winner after unleashing a 25 yard howitzer in front of the Town End.

And yes, I would also start King Kev instead of Darby, who has done nothing wrong but personally I think Kev is better going forward.

Danny Wilson's Danny Wilson.

I think the frustration of the last two games where we've done everything but score (94th minute o.g equaliser v Exeter notwithstanding) will be released today. On the other hand, I don't see Walsall coming for a draw as they can't go up or down and they gave it a right good go at Udders the other night.

With these things in mind I am predicting a totally mental game.

6-3 Town

Austin 2, Paynter 2, Douglas, Sheehan

As has been mentioned elsewhere, Amankwa needs to start ahead of Darby (who has been excellent but does not bomb forward like big Kev and that is what we need today)

I have never seen us win 6-3. I've seen a 5-3 and a 6-4. When did we last win 6-3, if ever?

Reg? Dave?

Couldn't ask for better opposition than a side in mid-table.

Hard fought game but Swindon coming out comfortable winners.

Gillingham not to lose against Leeds is also a confident prediction.

Any win today is a good result - 3 points is all that matters.
We could do with Norwich beating Charlton, or at least holding them to a draw. Our best hope of Leeds dropping points is likely to be in their last 3 games. I expect them to win today but you never know, the pikies are ok at home so could take something.

As we know, as soon as we go behind we dont win, now would be a great time to change that! Espescially with Leeds and Charlton losing!

Yeah we had a chance last weekend and on Monday and we are doing it again today.

And why is it that we can never win when we go behind?? Something is obviously wrong because that is just ridiculous, Don't we have a Plan B?

We have to win one game season going one goal down, 2700 seconds to go.

O,K lads do you really want it, do you want to achieve something in your professional careers, you are going to have to live with the next forty-five minutes for the rest of your lives.  If anyone doesn't believe we are going to win 3:1, I will sub you right now.  This is the time to be counted, the next forty-five minutes may define the entire season.  No get out  there and win this game.

And history has shown that the play offs is more often than not about the team playing with momentum, not necessarily the best side (Palace, Burnley, Brighton) I agree its been an awesome season and the boys have done us proud but on the last 3 results I wouldnt be too confident of us getting through the semi final.  Just ask our chums at Reading last year about losing form before the play offs.

Dont read into it that Im pissed off with the season though, far from it - Im paranoid that we wont get the rub of the green in the play offs mind

Why would you play a narrow 4-3-3 and hoofball when we weren't winning anything in the air? We can't play long ball and shouldn't try to. The subs never should have been made IMO, not sure if Ferry was carrying a knock but he should have kept the team the same. We are still in with a great chance of Auto, a better chance than we we had this time yesterday! and FFS, when was the last time we had something good to play for going into the last three games, its been an incredible season and could still get alot better. The table will change next week and the week after, and if we are in with a shout going to Millwall then we have a chance!

Cheer the fuck up, yes it's frustrating, but every side gets nervous, goes long too early and makes mistakes when there is alot at stake, which is why the other sides lost today and which is why the other sides will drop points in the last 3 games, just like we will.

Annoying not to win but a draw was a fair result. Can't complain with the season we're having, too much doom and gloom on the texts into radio Swindon after the game.

Wilson made the correct changes, it's just a shame that Frank Nouble and Vincent Pericard are two of the most clueless players I have seen for us since Fola Onibuje in 2006. Not sure who was worse.

Title: Re: Swindon Town V Walsall Official Matchday Thread
Post by: Iffy's Onion Bhaji on Saturday, April 17, 2010, 16:41:36
I've no complaints about that. We didn't deserve to win that game. We were awful in general from start to finish with a few spells in there that were half decent but nothing more. What's with the fucking hoofing today? The only player who wanted the ball on the floor was JD. He was getting the ball down but no one else seemed to be doing anything with it.

We gave them a crap goal. A really crap goal from nothing. It wasn't even like the Exeter goal. It was just shit from us. Pure shit. Cuthbert shouldn't have passed it to Lucas in the first place and why Lucas decided to pass it back is beyond me. Should have hoofed it out but instead Cuthbert treads on the ball and it's 1-0.

As soon as it's 1-0 you never fancy us but Walsall looked like they were on holiday already. The sad reality was that we did as well. Nice poachers goal from Charlie and you think we are back in it and should go on to win but Charlie comes off and it goes to pot. No one took the game by the scruff of the neck. Nouble and Pericard were poor and Timlin had 10 good minutes before he decided he'd join in the show and become shite as well.

I guess the positive points are we have still closed the gap to Leeds abelt only by a point and we have now confirmed a play-off place which is good. But there was a missed chance and if we perform like that in the play-offs we have no hope at all. I fucking hope we win our last 3 and Charlton beat Leeds. We'd go up then but I just can't see it after today.

The club is moving forward in every way, not going up will not be a disaster.  Everything is in place for continued success.  The playoffs was the objective all along.  Three games without a win when it should have been two or three wins is not going to halt the progress of this football club.

We've had a couple of disappointing performances this week from a team that has run itself ragged through March pulling off a string of great performances against the odds. We've played 5 games in the last 15 days, surely its to be expected that players are going to be a bit tired and jaded?

We're still in with a chance of automatic promotion and are almost nailed on for a play off position. I would have bitten someones hand off for the guarantee of a playoff spot at Christmas, let alone after last years finish and losing Cox's goals in the summer.

It's worth considering that our form has suffered a bit of blip over 3 games. We have three league games left to turn it back round before the play-offs.

Nouble is a bit shit though.

To be honest arriba, we don't watch the other teams - the chances the other contenders have etc

What we do know is that we conceded a lot goals late on at one point so that could validate your point but we also know that Leeds United had a significant lead at the top - so we're not the only one who have potentially fucked up.

We've flirted in and around the Play-Offs most of the season whereas only entered the top 2 for one week. With that in mind I would say we are exactly where we deserve to be. If we don't go up, it's not a fuck up.

Don't think anyone expected to be in the position we are in at the start of the season, so a big up to all the players and management. If it's play offs then so be it, it's a bit of a bonus, but then it could be auto, still three games to go, exciting ain't it?

i dont give a shit about all this "we're lucky to have a club,we should be mid table" bollocks.
we have had a fucking golden chance of promotion,if we blow it then its our fault.
so many opportunities have not been taken.
time to show if they have the bollocks or not to get out of this division.

To be fair chaps i cant see much bollocks in this post...theres five sentences and all are correct.
The fact is arribba words it differently than the other 8000 there today.
I agree with all five sentences to be honest.....the first line being a little hard.

No. I don't care what enyone says, there is no way this season can be described as a fuck up if we don't go up. That's just a stupid statement which could apply to every club which just misses out on promotion. I'm not arguing about it though. I'm off out for a beer 8)

"if we dont go up this season it will be a massive fuck up"

1) Start of the season - you look at the teams in this league - Norwich, Leeds, Charlton, Southampton, Millwall, Huddersfield. Its the strongest League One, possible ever. Most people, myself included, thought it would a mid-table season, with perhaps an outside chance of pushing for 6th place and sneaking in. We have been there pretty much all fucking season. Thats already exceeded all pre-season expectations regardless of what happens now.

2) Ignoring that, your "so many opportunitys have not been taken" - yeah we havn't had great results in the last couple of weeks. But I guess you have forgotten about the opportunities that we have taken, e.g. 2 wins against Leeds, 2 wins against Southampton etc.

3) Then your "we have had a fucking golden chance of promotion,if we blow it then its our fault" comments. Surely that applys even more to Leeds, Millwall and Charlton - due to the fact they are all in the same postion, with even more expectation, stronger sqauds, bigger budgets etc?

If we dont go up this season, it WON'T be a massive fuck up. It will be because a better team than us has got 2nd spot, and a better team than us have won the playoffs.

Opportunity missed rather than two points dropped today. We looked tired, devoid of ideas, hesitant and devoid of the football we had been playing. 1-1 was probably a fair result.

Its so frustrating. It must be the pressure getting to us. Its not unique, looks like Leeds, Millwall and possibly Charlton are suffering too.

On the plus side we are a point closer to Millwall and Leeds. On the downside we need Leeds to lose another to be in with a shout. And that is assuming we can win if they do.

Chances for promotion to the championship don't come by too often. We need to sort out our stagefright before the playoffs.

none of us expected us to be up there this season.but and its a big fucking but,we have had a great chance of going up, and i stand by what i said above, it will be a fuck up if we blow it.
it's only down to the others around us fucking up that we're still up there.
if the others aint been losing, i think people would be more harsh on what we've been doing.
2 points from the last 3 games is a poor return.even 4 points from that 9 would have us right there.

We're all gutted that 2nd is now unlikely but I think some have forgotten what we are - a collection of last seasons (near relegation) squad, free rejects from other clubs and loan players. Wilson has done wonders to get us to where we are now on such a small budget, but we've shown in the last 3 games that we haven't got quite enough strength and quality when it really matters.

Let's enjoy the play-off's and hopefully a nice day out at Wembley.

If Leeds United don't go up it's a 'massive fuck up' because they had a significant lead between them and the Play-Offs. Plus they're a massive club at this level.

If Charlton Athletic don't go up it's 'massive fuck up' because they too are a massive club at this level plus they also had a decent run of form that dipped dramatically.

You could even call Huddersfield Town's potential failure to go up a 'massive fuck up' because they invested quite a bit pre-season.

Then there's Franchise whose owner has massive expectations but they've failed and face budget cuts - 'massive fuck up'.

Tranmere Rovers are still rueing their fuck up from last season where they missed out on the Play-Offs on the final day and sacked their decent manager for John Barnes. MASSIVE fuck up!

Southend United have gone from Play-Off challengers to relegation fodder in a year... Yup, M-F-U!

Bristol Rovers are horrifically inconsistant, they could/should have competed for a Play-Off place.

I could go on but I hope you get my point. The joy of this sport is how unpredictable it can be, when it goes against you it's frustrating as hell - but when it goes in your favour? Lovely.

Not strictly true....we were inconsistent that season, but you may recall, Grunt Sniff missing a last minute pen at MKD, for a 2-1 win which would have taken us a point from the PO's with 7 games to go.  Once again however we tailed off.

It's not uncommon for this to happen, as it's hard to win matches under pressure, the secret is to have points in the bag, like Norwich, when they had a small blip recently, or for that matter Leeds.

But you could argue that if all those late goals hadn't gone in then we would be up. What's gone is gone. Irrelevant.

Its just a bit disappointing that we have secured 2/9 points while this close to the autos. A real missed opportunity given other teams around us have equally poor form. I'm sure all the fans of the teams that miss out on second will say the same.

I don't see how the season is anything less but a success though. Its not like we were top all season and threw it away.

My thoughts are it was crap today, no passion, no real effort and bloody clueless at times. Some players seemed to think the season finished at Elland Road, they got to come back down and start fighting.  Our play was so predictable again, no real width and no pace!  It is ironical that Darby was voted mom because I feel the thing that is missing now is Manky's raids down the wing setting things up in the box for us.  Just as well it wasn't Sheehan who made that almighty fuck-up for their goal, computers would be in melt-down now!!  Oh and Greer did his best to give one away in the second half!!

Title: Re: Swindon Town V Walsall Official Matchday Thread
Post by: jonny72 on Saturday, April 17, 2010, 18:10:23
The frustrating thing is that we have dominated the last 3 matches yet somehow only got 2 points. In each of those 3 games we've had more of the possession, more shots on target, more shots off target (except vs Walsall) and more corners than the opposition. I'm just not sure whether this is good or bad.

My only real criticism today was the substitutions. I'm guessing Ferry was injured and if not, Wilson must have been watching a different game to me. Taking Austin off when you're planning to play 3 up front and put the ball in the box is never a good idea as he's the most likely to pick up a loose ball.

When we put the 3rd striker on, why was Ward taken off rather than a defender? Its pointless playing 3 up front and taking off one of the wide players that you need to put the ball in to the box. A single point from today is unlikely to make much difference at the end of the season, Wilson should have said fuck it and gone for all 3 - especially as it would have broken the record of not coming from behind this season.

I wouldn't be too critical of Nouble or Pericard either. Whilst they did nothing and were generally crap for me it was mainly due to the tactics we were playing. Neither were supplied with the balls they needed to do anything. We didn't even look like scoring again once the changes were made, which is pretty bad.

Let's enjoy the play-off's and hopefully a nice day out at Wembley.

The voice of reason, we have these loan players at the moment:

Ward
Darby
Sheahan
Ferry
Nouble

Almost half our outfield is on loan.  Will even two of these loan players be with us next year.  We need more non-loan players as starters. Ward and Ferry are obvious priorities, but we may not sign either of them.

The mentality we have is understandable, we don't have a board that is going to sell the best players at the earliest opportunity and will not suddenly slash the playing budget.  We have had to endure that for too many years.

So what's next?  Whether or not we gain promotion, there is going to be rebuilding, but look at where we are and where we have come from.  Before the new board and Danny arrived who could we sign, who would join Swindon, not for example Wycombe star Kevin Betsy if rumours were true.  Next season, with or without promotion  especially with more and more financial difficulties all over the divisions, players will want to sign for Swindon.  Danny and the board have broken us out of the cycle of not attracting good players to Swindon Town.

Let's look at the rest, we need a left back if Sheahan doesn't sign, we need a midfielder or two who can score.  We have prospered with Paynter, a player kept out by Revell earlier in the season, who could have been on his way to Div II from Southend.  We got Charlie (for now anyway) from non-league obviously, a once in a life time find, which only happened because Bournemouth couldn't sign him.  This isn't exactly how Southampton, Leeds, Charlton, Norwich etc. have operated.  How we got a shout of auto is incredible, since when has Div I had four former Premier League league teams in it.  Leeds United are shitting themselves following our results.

Its only just started, Swindon Town is a team that is still being put together.  The most critical part of our progress was not getting relegated last season.

I think there's a lot of talking at cross purposes at the moment.  I think it's completely feasible to simultaneously

(a) recognise the massive steps forward taken both on and off the pitch this season and the great achievement that a near certain play off place represents; and
(b) feel a sense of real disappointment that form has slipped in recent games.

In the immediate aftermath of a disappointing home draw, I really don't think it's unreasonable to want to let off steam about a missed chance (or three).  We could all be completely level headed and see the big picture all of the time...but then we wouldn't be football fans.

It looks like we're all cocking up at the moment but weirdly we're better off than we were yesterday. I'm still hopeful. Today was shit, next week I think we'll do well Wycombe will be up for it which may mean they will attack us unlike Exeter or Walsall.

It's very easy to forget that we are dealing with human beings here. This is a damned good set of lads that Danny has assembled and I am pretty sure that they have given their absolute level best every game they have played (maybe not Hutchinson but he's history now)

It's hard for a career couch potato like myself to imagine the sheer physical exertion these boys put in every single  game and the effort that has gone into every game. And then you have the mental pressure as well which must be enormous. Then you consider things like 9 months ago Charlie Austin was playing for Poole Town part time, this is Danny Ward's first taste of first team football and Simon Ferry has been out injured for two years, TWO YEARS FOR FFS!!

I reckon that right now, the players are as gutted as we are that we haven't fully capitalised on the other teams around us losing. There have been times in seasons past when I would not have thought that.

I am not making excuses for anyone but I think sometimes you have to take a step back and try to appreciate the massive effort that has been put in this season.

If certain people think it's a 'massive fuck up' if we don't go up then that's up to them. I'm not even going to try to to argue with them. If some one believes the Earth is flat, you're not going to convince them otherwise. However this season pans out, I will be proud of The Club and the players and the management and it's a long, long time since I've been able to say that. This Club is on an upward curve again, make no mistake.

Am I pissed off and frustrated right now though? You better fucking believe it!

I agree about Big Kev. He gives us better attacking options than Darby. Ward and Sheehan don't work effectively as a pair down the left and having Big Kev gives us an option down the right. I don't like the idea of JPM in the middle but then again last season I didn't like the idea of JPM full stop.
This may sound wrong but I may be inclined to start Perricard and put Charlie on the bench. He looked fucked today and did a hell of a lot of play acting resulting in a justified yellow card.

First thing would be a few days rest, five games in fifteen days whatever it is, with basically the same team.  Then I would think on Saturday, who could I give a breather.  Manky could come in at RFB.  I like the combination with JPM.  We are not scoring like we were, Manky makes for a more attacking line up with his forays upfield.  I would like to rest the one of the main strikers for a week, but that would be very difficult.  Perhaps, Marshall deserves a start for Ward.  In any event the opposition seems to had us sussed in the last few games.  It is time to start Pericard, if he isn't bothered, bring Charlie on.

I said the same to my mate, next week may well be better for us as Wycombe need to win as well so hopefully the game will be streched and open as they need a win more than us which could play into our hands. I am more worried about Brentford than Wycombe and Millwall.

we got to second,it was ours to lose, and lose it we did.that if we dont go up is a fuck up.
just because others have fucked up too, doesn't mean we aint done so.

luckily it's still on and we could get promoted.and despite saying it will be a fuck up if we dont,it will have been a decent season if we fail.
i never expected us to challenge, but when you do, it can only make you disapointed to blow it.
the next couple of weeks are going to be very interesting, and it's impossible to call.
i just hope it's us who's happy come the end of it

In any event the opposition seems to had us sussed in the last few games.

The same thing has happened in other games this season. The real concern is that Wilson doesn't seem to have plan B for when this happens, we just keep on playing the same game and getting nowhere. For that reason I'd like to see us try something different next week, maybe a 4-5-1 with Austin or Paynter up front (or even Nouble), Ward in an attacking midfield role just behind the sole striker and Marshall on the left. I reckon Ward had one of his best games playing that position against Norwich and it would be worth trying it again. Just something different from the 4-4-2 we always play.

Definitely Austin's goal, not sure he knew too much about it but he got the last touch. Pretty certain the card was for a foul on the keeper as well rather than diving.

Wilson's lack of a Plan B really does worry me! I'm going to be a nervous wreck if we end up in the play-offs, If we go behind i will fear for the worst, Teams' do have us sussed so we need to do new things and not continue to play the same way because it's not working.

I think Wilson has a plan B, although its no more than hoof it to the big black striker who is next to useless more often that not.

Also why do we keep hoofing it? We can't play that way, We are much better keeping the ball down so i don't understand hoofing it forward which we seem to be doing quite a lot lately.

Wilson needs to get a decent Plan B sorted for when we concede goals.

Fucking feel like cutting my wrists after reading a lot of that!

We are still in it due to other teams inability to win so gotta be happy surely.

The wankers that Booed today at the end don't deserve a sucessfull team to support.  2 points off 2nd and they boo, how can that possibly help the team for the next few games?  Absolute Fuckwits!

Maybe we should ask Malpas to come back so that at least there is a reason for everyone to be slitting their wrists!

Everyone laughs at WACCOE for going into meltdown, but threads like this are not much different to be honest.

Reality check anyone?

Nice

It was for leaving his foot in after the keeper collected the ball. Def Austin who scored, but i was sure  it went in off his arm, was convinced it would be disallowed. Thought walsall had done their homework well, the reason we hoofed it a lot, was because the always had 2 and sometimes 3 pressing when Cuthbert, Greer, or Lucas had the ball, hence we didn't have time to play out from the back like we normally do. Definately the worst i have seen us play this season, but people booing ought to piss off and watch sky from their armchairs.

Some people need a reality check in the DRS like the twat who gave ferry the wanker sign vs Exeter & others who booed the team off at half time today vs Walsall.
Yes we've dropped points in last 3 games, but we are still clearly in the playoffs positions, creating lots of chances & not having much luck in front of goal. I understand football is a passionate sport where people release their frustrations after a hard week at work & if you pay your money you entitled to your opinion BUT WHAT PURPOSE DOES BOOING THE TEAM DO ... WE ARE CHALLENGING FOR PROMOTION, NOT FIGHTING RELEGATION.

Well, you obviously live in a very 'black and white' world arriba and you don't seem to be able to take into account that, as I pointed out a few posts back, that we are dealing with human beings here. i.e young lads like Charlie Austin who was working on a building site a few months back. Danny Ward who had not played first team football before this season. Simon Ferry had not played for two years prior to coming to Swindon (TWO FUCKING YEARS - THINK ABOUT THAT).

As far as you are concerned, those boys have fucked up. I could argue with you about this until one of us dies of old age. Judging by your posts (this is all I can do as I've never met you in the flesh) you seem to be quite an unforgiving person who views things in a very harsh, black and white way. I'm not like that. Batch said we "looked tired, devoid of ideas, hesitant and devoid of the football we had been playing". I think that's a pretty good summary of today's game - we just didn't know what to do. Walsall had a plan and executed it well, but we never made it difficult for them.

BUT the table looks like this:

Norwich 89
Leeds 80
Millwall 79
Swindon 78
Charlton 77
Hudds 74

Now, anybody who seriously think we can't make the top two needs to sleep off their anger and come back tomorrow having had a good old think about things. Leeds have three potentially tough games, Millwall have been as devoid of ideas as we were today, and Charlton are still a point behind. Wycombe will want to beat us next week, and that could give us the chance to get in behind them and cause problems, which is what we've been missing over the past two or three games.

Don't give up now. We were poor today but that doesn't mean we won't regain form soon. It's still there for the taking, so try to look forward to the next three games, rather than back over a frustrating week.

You're right Reevesy..there's a massive amount of frustration around at the moment and everyone has different ways of showing it which leads to the occasional forum 'ding dong do' but it's only because we all care so much. Reading the posts you could be forgiven for thinking we were 8 points behind second or something but there's only two points in it. DW was right (as he is, more often than not) when he said it's going to go to the last game. As you say, let's look forward, not back. 8)

Its not like it is the first time this has happened, we should have a plan to counter it and we don't. Wilson should be making changes to the tactics from the touchline or making substitutions. With Walsall pushing up so much to counter our passing game there were gaps at the back we could have exploited with the right tactics, or even something radical like putting Nouble on in the 1st half to give us some pace up front for balls over the top.

But no, Wilson just stands there and does fuck all. When he does make changes, it's for the worse.

I think we can get back to winning ways next week which hopefully will give us a new lease of life , I can see the next 2 games for all involved panning out like this

Leeds - Franchise draw
Millwall - Orient home win
Wycombe - Swindon away win
Exeter - Charlton draw

Charlton - Leeds Home win
Tranmere - Millwall draw
Swindon - Brentford Home win as long as we score first

This would leave us needing a draw last day, still all to play for it is no point dwelling on missed opprotunities the players just need to start believing again and we might just start getting the rub of the green again which seems to have deserted us the last week. I was frustrated as hell coming away from today but since calming down I still think we can do it.

Austin's goal .... walsall fans thought it was handball according to my neighbour who was in the away end. Will take it though to make up for the shambolic goal we gave away.

Ward does appear to have gone off the boil recently, not getting another crosses in for Paynter / Austin. 2nd half going narrow didnt work, not enough width ...JPM was playing in central position, although Darby attacking play/overlaps were better today.

The last few games have shown we clearly were not under the radar and others have certainly noticed us and done their homework. Wilson must realise teams are banking up against us, from the off, and unless we tweak the system we're going to be continually frustrated.

At half time today I said to my mate I would have gone 3-5-2 after the restart, taking off Darby and Ward for Amankwaah and LJF (Sheehan and Amankwaah as wingbacks). Alas, nothing happened and as always when we are chasing the game, we revert to the shittest, most desperate tactics out there - long ball hoofs with no success.

I do hope Wilson realises this in the last 3 games and adapts our play to what we're up against. If not, I believe the season will fizzle out and we'll be none the wiser to where we stand in the play-offs.

I agree and I'm not complaining about the season as a whole either.

He has been phenomenal in the transfer market and has built an excellent team of 11 players that play great passing football. I can't think of anyone that I would prefer to have as manager and I'll say the same even if we don't go up - Wilson is by far the most valuable asset the club has at present.

But that doesn't mean he is perfect - his team selections, tactics and substitutions have all got regular criticism from plenty of people (me included). On the one hand it concerns me a fair bit given his experience but on the other he hasn't been here that long and most likely needs longer to get everything to where he wants it to be.

I thought we played OK today. Plenty of chances and loads of posession, but fuck all to show for it.

Up until Austin scored, I was all for taking him off as he looked fucked or injured. After he scored though, he was the last player I'd have taken off as he was suddenly full of confidence again.

Nouble was fucking embarrassing. Again. Pericard at least puts himself about.

I'd still play an injured or out of form Paynter/Austin combo over any of the alternative strikers we currently have on the books.

Agree with the comments about Amankwah being a better attacking option over Darby, but Darby hasn't let us down since he arrived. He gets forward plenty of times and is an intelligent player both in defence and attack, but Amankwah scares the fucking shit out of teams with both his pace and audacity going forward, so would get the nod from against Wycombe.

Still plenty to play for, even at this late stage with the teams around us fucking up worse than us.

It's a fucking pisser that we havent capitalised on a gilt-edged chance to clinch 2nd spot in recent weeks. Everyone is pissed off about it; players, fans, management and owners. That's a fucking 100% no-brain given.

*cough*

Anyway:

Bit calmer now as is always the case, and I have to give credit to Walsall. Easily the better side in the first half, Gray and Jones (who I rate highly at this level) were causing problems and Nicholls looked a threat. Deeney disappointed a tad but I won't judge over 90 minutes.

I have no idea why we started hoofing it, especially down the throat of a, what, 6'7" defender? I'd like to see JPM in the middle with Douglas I think, we seem to be having trouble breaking teams down at times, hence the endless passing. It looks pretty but a lot of the time we get nowhere, need to work on being more progressive when we've got possession. Wilson has said as much, lets see it put into practice.

Still, it says a lot that a Walsall fan on another forum said we're one of the better sides he's seen, and most Town fans are annoyed with the performance.

Austin, needless goading of the away fans, would much have preferred him to grab the ball and run back to the half way line. Still, he's living a bit of a dream at the minute (probably a poor excuse though considering how riled up Town fans got after Wordsworth's celebration against Colchester last week)

Nouble and Pericard really don't inspire me. Frank doesn't want to be here and Pericard shows the odd touch but is largely lethargic and frustrating.

My line-up for Wycombe:

-------------------Lucas--------------------

Manky-----Cuthbert------Greer------Sheehan

Marshall---Douglas---------JPM----------Ward

-------------Austin----Paynter---------------

Just feel we need freshening up a bit. I'd even consider JFL in for Sheehan. Or you could go Ferry, Douglas and Easton in a central 3, with JPM and Ward supporting Paynter/Austin.

We've got a few options, i'd like to see us use them.

Ok then, dickwad.

Very surprised Amankwaah didn't start instead of Darby today.

FFS Swindon don't fuck up again!

We are obviously bottlers!!

I cannot believe we are bottling it again, God help us in the play-offs!! If they can't handle the pressure then we have no fucking chance!

Yeah we had a chance last weekend and on Monday and we are doing it again today.

And why is it that we can never win when we go behind?? Something is obviously wrong because that is just ridiculous, Don't we have a Plan B?

This is Exeter all over again isn't it!  :smack:

This really is our last chance, Let's hope they fucking take it!!

Leeds' fans are probably pissing themselves, Their losing but know that when we go behind we just don't win!

He didn't bring him on until very late in the game against Exeter.

What??? Very baffling.

:(

We should be going for it!

Not going to happen is it  :(

Yep  :(

But we had a great chance of auto but have fucked up in the last 3 games.

Yep it is a fucking joke!

Other teams won't keep fucking up, We won't get auto, Play-offs it is.

Why can't we win a game after going behind, WTF is going on?

I'm realistic, We won't get auto.

What worries me in the play-offs is what happens if we go behind in the semi final 1st leg?

There's a difference between negativity and being realistic, Do you think we will get auto? Come on.

Let's just hope if we don't get auto we win the play-offs but who thinks we could win them?

Wilson's lack of a Plan B really does worry me! I'm going to be a nervous wreck if we end up in the play-offs, If we go behind i will fear for the worst, Teams' do have us sussed so we need to do new things and not continue to play the same way because it's not working.

You're an Oxford fan, aren't you? You weren't even at the fucking game.

I think most of us expected Big Kev to start yesterday to give us more attacking options? We know that Vincents a solid defender but a slow one, he wouldn't have been able to keep up with Kev.

Also I am worried/pissed off/frustrated by our inability to come back from a goal down and win. I think you'd be stupid not to be. Even more so for a team at the right end of the table. Why can't we do it? As soon as Walsall scored I knew the best we could do is draw and that's shocking. Both for my lack of belief and the fact that its true

We do have a plan b but it isn't a good one. As show by Pericard and Noubles combined goal total being less than Ben Hutchinsons.

The last two home gams have been a disapointment. No two ways about it...

In the last two games we went 1-0 down he made changes and we got draws. Not saying they are great points as they clearly are not but to say the changes are for the worse is utter bollocks.

We were at 1-1 yesterday before the changes. I think they took away our momentum yesterday.

However, like you said they worked against Exeter and even more so against Norwich a few weeks back.

The players were nervous yesterday in front of an even more nervous crowd.

Hopefully the two away games will let them play with a bit less stage fright, so that if we have to play in the play off's we at least take a little bit of form into them.

I think Pericard needs to start a game to let him settle a bit - he is obviously a bit rusty.

Always think i can think abit more rational the day after.
We havnt played bad the last three matches, but we have lacked that little extra you need in these kind of battles.
In the last thros of yesterdays match we still had five players on the halfway line and we dont seem to have a gunho approach when needed,of course this style of play has seen us have a brilliant season but its just so frustrating as we really did have that second place in our grasp.
Of course a win next week puts us in the frame again but i think our chance of auto has gone.
The football has been a delight which prompted me to get a a ticket for next season...and we still have a good chance of playing in the Championship.

*cough*

Anyway:

Bit calmer now as is always the case, and I have to give credit to Walsall.

This is a pretty fair point, I know we all care far more about our performance but credit where it's due.  Walsall pressed the life out of us, looked sharper into the tackle and obviously had a bit more energy as they flung themselves into blocking tackles from start to finish.  Early on, they could have been 2-3 goals up and were racking up a corner count that was starting to get embarrasing.  After a while we got right into it and some of the passing and interplay with JPM, Dougie, Paynter and Austin was great to watch - it just kept breaking down at the vital moment or we didn't get a decent bounce in the penalty area.  Their 2 centre backs were on top of most things lumped in high so it was frustrating when we chose that option.  The nerves were definately jangling - not only because of a load of marginal back passes and defensive fannying around but the amount of touches players like Wardy seem to need - loads of attempted crosses were blocked or went too near the keeper.  Thought subbing Charlie was a bloody good move - he'd been getting a few sly kicks from their defence, had done a few comic late dives and had got booked. The biggest problem with both Pericard and Nouble was the lack of directness - they seemed happy to lay it off rather than drive straight at their defence and get them back peddling - this could be total lack of confidence, match play or ability, I haven't seen them play enough. All in all we still had enough chances in the second half to have got at least 1 more goal and they also missed a sitter when their attacker was clan through and dragged it past the far post.  Good to meet a few of the South Oxforshire Reds and Yeovil

Were getting the same treatment we got at the end of the League 2 seasons. Lots of teams comming down and getting 9 men back in their own box in the hope of a point. Only this time its working.

All I will say is that Norwich, Leeds and Charlton have had this pretty much all season. The pressure on their players is also much greater because their fans expect to go up, unlike ours who seem to be dreaming of Wembley.

Not one of Scott Cuthberts better games, but the bloke is still a class act. Nouble is a complete waste of time. Why he is so highly rated I have no idea, just another athlete who is never going to cut it because as a footballer he is average at best.

We were by far the better team at Colchester and against Exeter. But I didnt think we did enough yesterday. Amankwaah should have come on mid way through the second half.

If we cant come from behind to win a game does anyone think we really deserve to go up?

We're all gutted that we've dropped 7 points in the past 3 games but some of the fans in the Don Rogers Stand are complete bellends.

Booing the team at half time, what the fuck is that about?

Football is a funny old game as Greevesy would say and things could all change again next week.

Anything can happen and it probably will. If we beat Wycombe, we are at the very worse still only 2 points off automatic. Leeds then have a very hard away game at Charlton while we entertain Brentford at home.

Believe people.

Think the problem with not being able to come from behind and win is that we do not really have anyone on the bench who can change a game. Nouble looks awful- as does Pericard.

Paynter already seems to have his mind elsewhere- especially for the last 2/3 games.

Still onwards and upwards- lets have 3 points at Wycombe next week. They will have to come out and try and win the game so hopefully we will be able to play some of our football.

In the words of Peter Griffin, this really grinds my gears....There actually is no pleasing some people! The bloke that sits behind me says the exact same thing to what you just wrote. Pisses me off. Another one of his favourites is 'get it in the blaady box!' when at times we only have one man to aim at against 4 of theirs........I'd much rather we kept possession, whether that means going back to defence and startin again, than just lump it in hope it falls to our player.

Another thing about yesterday was that there was not enough movement from our boys. Again, i put this down to them being jaded. We've played the pass and move/triangles so well all season, but i can't remember seeing much of this yesterday. Although it was nice to see Darby get forward a lot more. He's pretty good at it, so should be encouraged to do it more often.

I've read this forum as a guest for as long as I can remember, but for some reason have now felt the need to add my two penneth.  At the start of the season, we'd have jumped at the chance of being in the position we're in, but I can't help but agree with several other people who think if we don't go up it will be a missed opportunity.  If we remain in league 1 next season, it's inevitable that players will move on and then we're back to the rebuilding of the team, which could make it difficult to get promotion next season.  Out of the top 8 teams, we've picked up the least number of points from the last 3 games, which is not good at this stage in the season and the pressure does look like it's starting to tell.  Unfortunately both Billy and Charlie are struggling to find the net and we're too reliant on them.  In previous years, we've had regular scorers from midfield and defence, but they're few and far between in the current team.  We've got nothing in reserver, as Nouble and Pericard are both shite as far as I'm concerned and I don't understand why Wilson is wanting to extend Nouble's load until the end of the season.  He's got no strength and is bullied off the ball with ease.  He doesn't pay attention to what's happening around him and on more than on occasion yesterday, when a free kick or throw was directed at him, he wasn't even looking.  Pericard has a bit more strength but not a lot else.  Sheehan was poor yesterday and I don't understand why Amankwaah wasn't brought on, he injected a bit of pace going forward on Monday, so why not again yesterday?  If we do fail to go up, it will be largely to blame on the last minute equalisers we conceded, which cost us 10 points in total.  4 of those points dropped were against Charlton, which would leave them 7 points behind us instead of 1.  If you deduct the 2 points for last minute equalisers we scored, we would have 8 more points than we have and be sitting easily in 2nd place!  i know that's football, but can't help but wonder  if only?  Anyway, I think Leeds will hang on to 2nd an we will have the excitement of the play-offs.   If we can go back to how we were playing we 're capable of beating any of them, but on the last few games performancess we'll struggle.  Haven't felt so tense about the end of a season for a long time.  Surely we deserve some luck?

Some of you seem to thing we have a divine right to be better than everybody else, and in 30 pages and 444 posts, only two people have given the opposition any credit. Maybe they'd done their homework, prepared a game plan and executed it well?

be fair, we have played and can play better than that. That's the point most of us are making I think.

Good post, how many 1:1s at the C.G. have there been with Walsall?  We have not been good enough lately and with five games in quick succession what's so surprising about a jaded performance.  Also, other teams seem to getting wise to us.  The objective all season has been to reach the play-offs, barring a slim mathematical chance we are in the play-offs.  As said earlier in the thread, we are too reliant on Paynter and Austin for goalscoring, two players that may not be at the C.G. next season if rumours have substance.  We are too dependent on loan players.  We need goals from more players, more from set-pieces and certainly more from midfield.  The job of rebuilding is still a work in progress, irrespective of which division we are playing next season.  All along, the policy from the chairman and manager is that they will only sign a player when the right player is available.  They will not repeat the mistakes that put us in Div II and then nearly put us back in Div II.  We have only had a few months of the team in its present form, and with the stability now in this club the playing side will struggle.  I wouldn't be surprised if Norwich, Leeds and Huddersfield are promoted with Huddersfield immediately returning to Div I after just one season.   We were heading for the toilet with Malpas at the helm less than a year and a half ago.

Indeed we have and can. I wasn't criticising our performance - how can I when I didn't go or listen to the commentary - more picking up on the ridiculous over-reaction of a significant number of people on this thread. I'm as disappointed as the next man, but FFS we're fourth and still in with a shout. Thank Leeds mega-meltdown since the end of January for that, otherwise they and Norwich would have been out of sight for the auto spots.

Oh, and fucking spot on Crozzer.

There isn't any maybe about it as me and others have already said. They came to disrupt our passing game by pushing up and closing players down quickly, it worked and we didn't have an answer (which was my main complaint).

I don't get all the people bitching about the complaints. No one is going WACCOE and demanding promotion, they're just pointing out that we could and probably should be in 2nd and they're disappointed. Making the playoffs isn't going to be a failure (it will be a massive achievement even if we don't go up) but it doesn't change the fact that having automatic promotion dangled in front of us and then (maybe) letting it go is going to be a downer.

Come the end of the season, no matter what division we'll be in next year, I reckon pretty much everyone will see this as a success and there won't be any complaints. I'm just happy that we're actually playing decent football that is worth paying to watch, compared to the complete and utter shit we had week in week out last season. But I'm still going to bitch about stuff if I feel the need.

i dont think people are demanding more, or expecting more than we are getting this season.
i'm not anyway.
we have threads taking the piss out of oxford after they dropped points.and numerous posts about leeds for the same reason.
then when some of us dare to say that we are in danger of cocking up, it is met with the type of critical posts that have been made over the last couple of days.
whatever happens now will not take away that this has been a great season for us.but dont confuse disapointment with expectation.

hopefully this debate will be for nothing as we'll go up(touches wood)

I think it's the way some of the posts are made - it's not "daring to say we might cock it up", it's the doom-laden "we've completely fucked up", "we're pathetic", calling the team "bottlers" etc (I'm paraphrasing, not trying to quote directly) posts which are so extreme they're always going to provoke a reaction. Some of the reactions are equally extreme and thus a cycle of nervous idiocy is born

I still think we'll be ok this season.  I think the biggest problem for us was when we were on sky.  Every manager that has a fixture against us will have a video of that so they can read our game and know how to stop us playing the way we like to.

I thought TIMMY!!! did ok when he came on.

Nerves are beginning to show though across most of the team, understandable really considering the prize at stake. And it's not just us. All the teams in the playoffs have been wobbling like fuck recently.

If we don't get 2nd and miss out on promotion via the playoffs, it won't be a disaster, or the end of the world.

Saturday was Malpasian (i.e. thoroughly unimaginative) and our most disappointing home match since Hartlepools in October. Walsall did execute their game plan well, and could have won the game 2-1 near the end with that shot going narrowly wide. Exeter's style of play was more "purist" however - at least they tried to play the ball out of defence, whereas Walsall just hoofed any ball out in the second half or blocked any shot. Effective though.

Nouble just needs a goal. Had he scored against Tranmere when we were 3-0 up and their keeper made a great save, he would be proving to be a good substitute to bring on. I want to see him run at defences more and scare them into making mistakes. Likewise Ward, he just needs a goal or a fantastic cross that leads to a goal and he'll be back to form. Had he scored when he hit the post on Monday, he would be his normal confident self.

I wish the CG could provide a galvanising atmosphere at this stage of the season. It has not topped the Leeds match for atmosphere, and that was back in January. If we do have to go up via the Play Offs, and we have to kick off at 12.15pm on Saturday 15th, as one of the fixtures for League One proposes, the atmosphere will be positively "meh". Why can't we have the Stratton Bank open and full for Brentford match like we did for that match against Mansfield in April 2007 when our fans were chanting from the Town End to the Stratton Bank and back again. Electric. And it might make the difference between a draw and a win, and 2 critical home points.

I still think we will finish 2nd, and if we miss out, we will get to Wembley and win there. Come on you Reds!

Nerves...plain and simple and if we dont get it sorted we will blow it.

Nobody played really well, Walsall came with a game plan of 'lets not lose' and executed it with a total fuck up from us to gift them the goal.

No Marshall on the bench.....still disappointed with that.

Did'nt like the booing at the end.....WTF???

Roll on Wycombe, they are under loads of pressure and will have a go and we will play better.

Whilst I dont think we played as well as we can on Saturday, credit must go to Walsall - they defended well, blocked pretty much everything (either defender or goalie), pressed hard behind the ball when we had it and looked dangerous on the counter attack. The question is though, after seeing both Exeter & Walsall play that way (OK different methods of counter attacking but both the same "defend first" principle), will any of our prospective play-off opponenents (if we dont grab 2nd place) play that way ? I suspect that Milwall, Leeds & probably Hudds will all be a bit more attacking than that, especially at their place, and probably here too unless they have a lead to defend.

The not winning after conceding first is starting to become a psychological block now, for the fans if not the players and this leads to frustrations in the stands. I saw more than 1 confrontation at half time in the DRS when fans challenged people who were booing. I suspect that many fans see this as our only chance to go up - if we miss out this year, will we be able to keep the key players & attract more/better ones ?

Meh. The few good bits mixed in with some absolute gash. As IBIMR said once, "the game just passed him by". Too lightweight, distribution not good enough and no composure.

Give him time and space on the ball and he's not a bad little player. That's the problem though, he needs time and space given to him. Not good enough for us, promotion or not

When Timlin came on at least he looked to inject a bit of pace and cause Walsall a few problems when they had the ball. We spent far too much of the game waiting for them to kick the ball back to us rather than trying to put pressure on them.

For me Timlin looked the only player really hungry Saturday, he was not nervous, came on with an urgency looking to make an impact and at least flung himself about into challenges.  If the rest of our players had shown a similar attitude we may have won the game.

Timlin had a good first 10 minutes when it looked like he could change things and was then back to his old self - shit passing, getting caught in possession and not being able to tackle a paper bag and the game completely bypassing him.
