Eastville
Ashton Gate

Let's make it four times four today.

I did not know this:

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Bristol_Rovers_F.C. (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Bristol_Rovers_F.C.)
The club was founded in 1883 as Black Arabs F.C....

There's some guff in the wikipedia article about 'playing in black kits' but I think the real roots of the name derive from Bristol's long history of racial tolerance.

And 0-0 for the score. We haven't had a 0-0 in ages.

Thats what frustrating as it seems he can't handle pressure etc.

When hes good, hes really good but when hes not it always costs us dearly.

I think I just want him to be good all the time as some of the stick I've heard him get is uncalled for!

Swindon makes a substitution, with Lloyd Macklin coming on for Simon Ferry.
What's that about? Has he had a bad game, or is all the trouble coming down the wings rather than the middle?

Exactly. And every time we have lost this season we have come back strongly. We lost at Gillingham then went unbetaen for 11 games. We lost 2 in a row then went on to win the next 4. There's reasons to be cheerful. Don't forget we're only 3 points off the top 6 with 2 games in hand. I wonder if this will be enough for Bart to make an appearance though?

I think this summary is spot on really: http://www.swindontownfc.co.uk/page/MatchReport/0,,10341~48612,00.html

First half we created all the chances and looked reasonably good going forward. JFL gave a goal away, and a minute later he made it easy for them to cross for the 2nd. Then just before half time he gave away a needless free-kick, the whole defence fell asleep and we were 3 down.

In the 2nd half we made a go of it for 10 minutes, didn't score and gave up. I have no idea why Austin went off, he was winning headers and pulling defenders about. Ward came on and didn't do a lot, but there was no real service from the midfield all 2nd half as they looked like they just wanted to go home.

We created just as many chances as Rovers and they didn't look a particularly good side. We just let them in three times with defending that Charlie Austin might not even be used to facing, and they weren't going to waste those chances

Hardly a disaster then. At least it wasn't as dire as Gillingham.

No, not a disaster. But it does feel like a waste of an afternoon when three basic errors cost you a derby game, and when the players seem to give up after about 50 minutes.

Bady day at the office all round.

Lescinel was an absolte joke for the first 2 goals- and was rightly taken off at half time.

We need to go in for a fullback in January- 2 players we let go in Vincent and Smith are both twice the player Lescinel is.

Title: Re: SWINDON TOWN VS BRISTOL ROVERS OFFICIAL MATCH DAY THREAD
Post by: jonny72 on Saturday, December 12, 2009, 19:17:49
I didn't have a good view of the goals, but I'm pretty certain someone (other than JFL) gave the ball away in our own half leading to the goals. Either way I'm not sure singling JFL out is fair, there was some shocking defending in the second half and I'm amazed it didn't lead to more goals.

Douglas made an attempt for twat of the year, stood just outside our own penalty area with a defender behind him, the ball comes to him and he decides to flick it over his head (in to a more dangerous area not knowing what was there) to lose the defender. Amankwaah had plenty of moments as well in the second half. As did Greer.

Going in 3 down at half time was harsh to say the least, on another day we'd have been 2-0 up. I'd single Paynter out for fucking up a brilliant chance when he hit the post, with what was a totally free shot from the edge of the area. It should have been in the net. There were other good chances in the first half as well.

Rovers really weren't that good, other than a couple of their strikers (or midfielders) who ripped our defence to shreds on a number of occasions. If we'd have played the full 90 minutes at something near to our best we would have turned them over. So its not all doom and gloom as some are making out, just a bad day at the office.

Why do we need another left back? We've already got JFL, Kennedy and Sheehan. Another would be pointless.

A solid left sided midfielder, similar to JPM, is what we really need - we look a far better team playing with wide midfielders rather than wingers.

JFL was extremely poor today and rightly subbed but jonny is right to say he was far from the only one at fault. Both moves started in the middle of the pitch and we didn't seem to challenge at all today. As has often been said we miss Douglas when he's not playing and he didn't seem to be today even if he was physically present. But it would be unfair to single anyone out - whole team had a bad day at the office. And yeah like so many others have said in the grand scheme of things and taken into perspective of our overall form/placing, it's just that - one bad game. But it is disappointing nonetheless, partly because I've got to go into work with grinning yokels in Brizzle on Monday, but also what Spence said earlier. Today was a game to really set down a marker to say whether we were really going to challenge this season. And we didn't, we just went missing.

The defeat was made harder to handle by having a right pair of goons stood behind me throughout the entire first half, who spent their time complaining that their accumulators weren't doing well and saying we should replace Greer (who can't pass) with Steve Fucking Elliott. Pair of bellends.

Still, Brighton next week. Think we'll get over today and be back on form by then.

You see I disagree with that totally. I think we've deserved the wins we have got. We've certainly been the better team in most of them like we were last week and against Huddersfield. I'd also say we were unlucky not to win a few of the draws we got earlier on in the season as well. We certainly could have had 2 or 3 more wins. The games we have lost are the ones we haven't really played great in.

I never thought we had that much of a chance of promotion with all the big teams in the division this season (Norwich, Southampton, Charlton, Leeds) if they sorted their shit out and it looks like they all have now (especially Southampton who are climbing the table fast).

Our current league position doesn't lie though, we're easily top 10 the way we're playing so far this season.

Getting back to today's game, what the fuck was with the attendance? 7,613 of which about 1,200 were us (I think that is what the announcer said). That is a seriously shit crowd, isn't it? Didn't we get about 12,000 for the home game last season?

put your money where your mouth is davo!

personally, I think we've been worth our top 6 spot, after all, we may have been lucky on some occassions, but unlucky during others, like all the games we drew.

We'll lose the odd game and today was one of em. Think we'll win next week, so let's move on.

Next.

Who knew, but Bart is right. Jean-Francois is a liability with balls over the top (See Gillingham and Carlisle, where although Anyinsah didn't score,  he beat LJF with ease) and was arguably at fault for all three goals today (although as Jonny pointed out, I think, Amankwaah gave the ball away for the second and for the third everyone was dozing). I think I'd be happy with Sheehan in his place, but for my money, left midfield is an area that needs attention, not sure O'Brien can give us what we need.

i dont think todays defeat is any real surprise at all.we have been pretty average but ground out points so far with a big chunk of luck.these things level out over time, and we wont be anywhere near the play offs come may.
unless money is invested in the team(unlikely)

Todays match was hopefully just an annoying blip. Its a pisser to get dicked by the gas, but its only one match in a long, long season. A lot of top-half Prem clubs suffer shit performances and results like we had today, but the good ones bounce back and end up doing well.

We need to stop feeling sorry for ourselves and concentrate on picking up points over the Chistmas break, starting with Brighton next saturday.

Blip or not, our players on the whole were a disgrace, and the fact they're being let off so lightly, after a game of such importance really fucks me off.

Agreed. Losing 3-0 after our run would be annoying if it were anywhere else. But 3-0 at Rovers makes it much fucking worse.

Most of the season the defence have been pretty solid. But there have been occasions where they are collectively woeful. Just odd days thankfully.

I said I'd be very happy if we were in touch of the playoffs come Christmas. Win next week and I'll be very happy! Charlton on Boxing Day will be tough. So I think a win Saturday is a must.

Still think we are a little short of firepower to maintain a proper playoff challenge. But its thus far a damned site better than last year. Progress.

We were lucky at Wrexham, but thats about it.

I was in the corporate seats in amongst the Rovers fans today and it sounds stupid, but we were by far the better footballing side at the start of the game, had most of the posession, passed it nicely. Greer played a beautiful 40 yars crossfield ball to Sheehan, which drew gasps from them. But we failed to defend 2 crosses from the right and thats it, game over. We couldnt cope with their right hand side all game, and that is definately something for Shirtliff and the lads to work on.

They did have more desire than us, and obviously deserved to win the game. But I think these things happen when you try and play football, like we are. A Sturrock side would have got embroiled in a war yesterday and probably lost 1-0. Its a bad defeat, but you dont get any more points for losing close games. Their tactics were spot on, probably helped by the fact they sent 3 scouts to watch us last week, and went home with pages and pages of notes.

Its a set back, especially for Lescinel. It seemed like Wilson was really getting every player to play for their shirt and its dissapointing that Lecs switched off today because he has been improving a lot. With Charlie Austin slotting into the side it looked as if we were completing the jigsaw, but weve got question marks over that left back slot as well now.

I was in the home end yesterday and I put a stupid amount of money on a Swindon win, so Ive got more reason to be done in than most. But I rekon dont panic, we are improving and we will bounce back, weve got strong characters in that dressing room now. Its still going to be an exciting season, weve still got a team to be proud of. YOU REDS!

We thrashed Woking really if you watch the highlights, had about 20 shots on goal. Just wasteful.

Weve got a good team. I think Lescinel gets one last chance, if he has another game like that there are question marks whether he is really a first choice starter. We need striker reinforcements, but Swindon are getting there.

Im the positive and excited about Swindon I have been for 2 years.

When Sheenan played LB yesterday he looked more solid, it is clear o'brien is shocking, that chance he missed was dreadful. It was a bad performece but hopefully just a blip, we cant play well every game. A home game next week which should win to get ourselfes back on track.

I dont think we can get promoted this year or reach the play-offs (bar some inspired signings in Jan) but a good mid table finish this year is a good stepping stone for next year when the league could also be a bit weaker with Leeds, Charlton etc going up.

Hmmm, looks like Wilson will have to play Sheehan left back, with O'Brien left wing next week and I fear the worse for O'Brien. Its a massive game for him, and he needs a good opening 15 minutes. Hopefully the crowd will go easy on him.

Having watched the goals again, blaming JFL for them is going way over the top.

For the first, their man got behind him and the ball was played over the top. Why hadn't the rest of the defence pushed up for offside and why was Greer five yards in front of JFL when the ball was played through?

For the second, he was out of position and could have done more to block the cross. But when the cross went over Cuthbert and Greer should have been covering the man and taking care of the cross and they didn't. Bizarelly, Greer actually stopped on the six yard box for some reason.

For the third, Greer should have taken care of the free kick and cleared it and he didn't.

the fact he can't seem to do this, pass, tackle, cross or track back make him a pretty useless individual.

I really don't understand our fans sometimes,we are so close to having a top 6 team yet some people just seem to want to moan like fuck about everything and scrutinise everything.

I personally think we are 2/3 good players of planting ourselves firmly in the top6 and based on what wilson has done so far i trust him to get us those players if not then we get a improved finish on last season still.

I left with about 10 minutes left to play yesterday, the players had given up so I thought I'd follow their example.

LJF is a crap defender. No matter what anyone thinks of his ability on the ball, or his overlapping, or his crossing. The main purpose of a left back is to defend and he does this badly.

Really disapointed with yesterday, we played the better football but were carved open too easily. I also don't know why Austin was subbed.

Sheehan needs to be in the back four next week.

Even when we win, sometimes I like to point out negatives and positives to give an all round perspective. Unfortunately it probably makes it sound like I want perfection in every game.

We will be in the playoffs or thereabouts come the end of the season. The fact we've been planted in the top ten for ages shows the achievements of Wilson. Malpas fucking destroyed this team and despite myself and many others thinking things would improve, they never did. Contrast that dire football to what we have now and too many negative thoughts just make it seem like we're fans with ideas above our station (which is probably not an unfair assessment in some respects).

Yesterday's result and performance sounded bad, but we've been shit on occassion this season and it hasn't continued. I think Reg must get his rocks off by being a doom merchant. When was the last time he got our season prospects correct?

Don't know about you, but I like to look at the bigger picture, and try and figure out what this means to us.

In this case, is our early season something of genuine promise, or should we be more restrained in our enthusiasm...so for me the acid test comes in how we shape up away at top ten teams and how we do v Leeds and Charlton.

Just because we got the biggest stuffing at Wovers since I first went to Eastville over 43 years ago, doesn't necessarily mean the wheels have fallen off, but it doesn't exactly make me feel like dancing in the streets.

I agree with this point and quoting it because what was said not because you said it but Jamie Vincent did the defending part well but offered nothing going forward and generally got pelted for it each week from our fans.

I have a feeling Sheehan is only playing left wing because we didnt sign Hal Robson-Kanu. If we had, it would be those two on the left.

I didn't actually listen, so I guess I should have said 'reads bad'. Even if we were good in other areas, defensively we were poor and it was our undoing. I expect there will be some lessons learned.

On that basis Reg leeds season does not look to good does it.Think they have only played 2 top 10 teams this year drawing against one.

I don't give a shit about Leeds, but do about STFC....however you dress it up losing 3-0 at Rovers isn't great.   Fair play for being in the  fraternity, but I'll stick with being pissed off with losing 3-0 to the Gasheads.

You are defying your own logic now Reg.

I think he looked like a player trying too hard to impress before he got injured.

However I am nearly positive with a run in the side and a bit of learning he will be an excellent player, just needs first team football.

Did you ever see him play away from home Batch?

He does seem to play better away from home. I dont know if thats linked to a poor debut at home to Leyton Orient or not.

if we are there or there abouts come the transfer window, i can see fitton being tempted to dip into his pockets

I'm not so sure. I think he may wait till the summer. I think we'll be top 10 this season so that's deffo progress on the last and then we can try and keep the core of this team together and spend a little in the summer to get those 2 or 3 players that we need to make up a good team for this level.

No-one's argued any different. I'm well fucked off we lost yesterday for the reasons I posted yesterday in this thread, but it doesn't mean the season's a write-off. And I think most people feel the same

I have not even made a comment on yesterdays result as most normal people would obviously realise i am pissed off as much as the next person. What i have commented on is peoples opinions that we have been lucky and people who think that because we lose away to rovers that we can't possibly be challenging for the play offs.

I suggest instead of looking up stupid fucking smileys you try and find where i tried covering up yesterdays result.

I dunno i got a feeling he will.By january wilson would of no doubt told fitton who he is likely to be releasing in the summer so maybe fitton will spend some money knowing we have a batch of high earners fucking off in the summer

I'm more than happy with the season so far. Rome wasn't built in a day and nor will STFC. The left hand side is our weakest link but I feel sorry for JFL - in equal measure great and crap. Macca was pretty crap all season in front of him and the last thing you want from a developing player is to do the work of two. I'd happilly see Sheehan at LB over JFL but JFL is not the anti Christ.
There are some great building blocks in place for next season, which is a more realistic play off/ promotion proposition.
I'm happy with my lot and I'm really enjoying watching STFC again as are the people I go with. My glass is half full whereas at the start of last season it was absolutely empty.

Draw a line under this one.

Sheehan wasn't signed on loan just for the sake of it, it will be a surprise if Sheehan doesn't start at left back on Saturday, with JFL on the bench.  Expect Sheehan to be a permanent signing in January.

Why take Austin off?  No early goal, let's see what Ward can do and give Charlie a breather.  Wilson was thinking about the next game from about 4.15 p.m. yesterday afternoon.

It is annoying losing to Rovers, but there's always the return game to look forward to.  If we had drawn the last two we would have had one less point and less moaning.

Be interesting to see what the left side would be like with Sheehan at the back and Macklin in front of him.
he appears to have a big more a touch but considering how we forgot how to pass yesterday i don't think he'd have a lovely time..plus he's right footed and would be pretty easily found out

in short- i have no idea what the best left sided option is, i imagine wilson is enjoying my company in this boat

I am pissed off by losing to the gas.

Yes JLF LFJ LJF had a shit game.

Yes our defence seems to be letting in a few easy goals lately, but I wasnt expecting us to be challenging for the play-off spots before the season started so I will take the position we are in and hope we can keep the pressure on the top 6 what with having 2 games in hand of all of them bar Leeds.

You dont need to play well and win consistantly, you just need to win and if you win dirty or crappy then so be it, a win is a win.

This time 2 years ago I was fucking shitting myself that we wouldn't even have a football club to follow, the txt's from mates in the club saying about how perilously close we actually did come to folding, and then Fitton pulling out around the Forest Green FA Cup game.

I will take where we are right now thank you very much.

I just hope the players WANT to play for the club and can come back with a great win next week...onwards and upwards.

Had a nasty feeling about this match..

Didnt go due to drinking commitments at the Xmas do that saw Mrs Flash blow chunks over the front of the Premier Inn Stoke.

Listened to the first half in disbelief!

Onwards and Upwards.

Agree with that, JJ. Fucking good post.

We all moan like cunts from match to match, but we're in a much healthier position now as a club than we were a couple of years ago - which, in a weird way, allows us all to moan like cunts about the football, the results and the players.

I'm deffo happy with our progress considering the depths of the cunting great big black hole we've emerged from.

I dont think anyone is really, honestly that pissed off with our progress at the moment. The banter and debate is what being a fucking Town supporter is all about, surely? :D

Just a thought, but I wonder if a straight swap for Sheehan at left back and JFL in left midfield might work? JFL has all the right qualities going forward but defends like a cunt at times, wheras Sheehan looks solid at left back and has the experience in that position. If JFL does the good things in midfield without the responsibility of having to defend, it could work well.

I didn't actually listen, so I guess I should have said 'reads bad'. Even if we were good in other areas, defensively we were poor and it was our undoing. I expect there will be some lessons learned.

Dare I say, we may be missing McNamee, though hopefully Macklin will be back to form - I quite liked the look of his play before he got injured.

Si Pie.
Hope you didn't go to the weatherspoons mate only giving advice !. But ended up in this quiet little pub with fellow Gasheads. A bit dead really (CLICK BELOW)... Hope it works.
