See I'm not a fan of commercialised cider. I like the good cloudy stuff. Might cost a bit more but def worth it!

I had a spell of drinking cider back in the summer into early autumn..Thatcher's Gold and Magner's draught....tended to get excessively pissed, so went back to ale late autumn early winter.

Thatcher's Gold is very decent....Magner's draught ludicrously expensive, but does slip down easily.

My kid who likes his cider, speaks highly of Black Rat, which is sometimes available in the Wheatsheaf.

Its marketed by the Moles brewery of Melksham...although I believe its made by Thatcher's.  I daresay one of our wurzel cousins will know a bit more about it.

I had the home made calvados on a visit to Normandy - absolutely fucking lethal. We were toasting the French, they were toasting us and it was going down in one. I was so pissed I ended up crapping on the hotel bedroom floor. Not a nice way to start the morning after.

Ordered a mkixed crate in the end from westons containing:

1880 (500ml)
Cider with Raspberry (500ml)
Stowford Export (660ml)
Old Rosie Scrumpy (660ml)

Be intersting to try the raspberry one.

1880 deserves respect. Stowford is a good drinking cider. Old Rosie isn't bad either. Good shout but be careful with the 1880.

Somerfield are doing four bottles of Ale for four quid...and 20% off,so three bottles of Ale for £3.20.....i shall pop in and get a dozen newbies for xmas,as for cider ive tried many but i still love Woodpecker.

Leefer, no ,no ,no. Woodpecker is for the girls. I won't touch Blackthorn either as they used to sponsor the Slave Traders. Cornish Rattler is worth a try as is Morrisons Vintage Cider - 4 bottles for a fiver. Woodpecker, no, no, on. Thats like having a korma - no.

I did think of using the emoticon....thing about something like Woodpecker it's probably quite pleasant to drink if you don't want to get hammered....and there's nowt wrong with that.

BTW CS I wouldn't drink Blackthorn because of the Shitty connection..

I always buy my cider locally at Bridge (Farm East Chinnock, Yeovil, Somerset BA22 9EA
Tel: 01935 862387) between Crewkerne and Yeovil, proper cloudy stuff sold by the gallon, £4.50-£5 a gallon 7% and yummy too, 1 gallon is about an evenings worth of cider for me. Love it but it just doesnt touch me any more, I dont even get slightly pissed on 8 pints any more, I think I am immune to its effects now but I still love it.

But we are very lucky here in South Somerset if you like Cider as most farms sell it locally for less than £1 a pint on average.

JJ does point out that 4 quarts of Somersets finest sets him back 4.50 to 5.  Which is a bit cheaper than 8 pints of some cack like Carling, which would be closer to 24.

Obviously the Apple in Bristol - also known as the Cider Barge - is obviously good for cider. I've heard that the nearby Orchard is too.

So is http://thegoodbeerblog.blogspot.com/2008/08/review-royal-oak.html (http://thegoodbeerblog.blogspot.com/2008/08/review-royal-oak.html) The Royal Oak in Bath. They've got four ciders - usually including two rough farmhouse ones along with the perry and a fizzy one.

The Gluepot in Swindon always has three or four good ciders on - including Weston's Old Rosie.

Cheddar Valley is bad enough ! Although personally I've always enjoyed it and just got stupidly mellow on it I've never seen another drink do so much damage to my drinking mates as much as this ! From projectile vomiting to wanting to fight and indeed fighting the whole world it really is a devils brew. The neon orange squash colour should give it away really but there you go.
May have to avoid the 'Natch' in this case ?
