I am looking to buy a couple of new tyres and have read good things about Vredestein Ultrac Vorti. Need them on a 225/40/18 but can't find them anywhere unless you have them delivered. Hoping someone can suggest a local fitter. Title: Re: Cars Post by: Samdy Gray on Tuesday, September 2, 2014, 08:41:50 What the hell are you driving to need tyres that wide and low?!

Mine is recommended 98ron, so use vpower or momentum99, which helps. It will run on normal unleaded but the additives in super help the engine. Title: Re: Cars Post by: 4D on Thursday, March 12, 2015, 21:39:11 Turbo MCS

http://www.topgear.com/car-news/big-reads/ford-focus-rs-vs-rivals The past 5-10 years has seen Ford really take the car market by storm. I've considered a lot of options recently and personal leasing seems to be a good way to go. Just need to get my head around "not owning" the car. ;D Title: Re: Cars Post by: Chubbs on Thursday, February 18, 2016, 13:58:05 I went direct with ford, very straight forward, walked in to have a browse and walked out withing an hour or so buying a car. Its almost too easy.
Title: Re: Cars Post by: Samdy Gray on Thursday, February 18, 2016, 13:59:04 You'll always get people saying that buying a 3-5 year old car and running it into the ground is more cost effective.
I considered that, but would've still needed to finance it. For the same monthly outlay, I can drive a brand new car, no MOT or tax to pay for and haven't got to worry about mechanical problems because of the warranty. I even get free roadside assistance. Title: Re: Cars Post by: Bewster on Thursday, February 18, 2016, 14:19:15 I considered that, but would've still needed to finance it. For the same monthly outlay, I can drive a brand new car, no MOT or tax to pay for and haven't got to worry about mechanical problems because of the warranty. This is what sold it to me - which means that hopefully you'll never get any big maintenance/repair bills. As we have two cars we have just bought a new family car replacing the old CRV we've had for 10 years and hopefully we'll lease the other one. PCP on used cars just doesn't add up as you are financing the whole finance part at a higher interest rate after putting down a more significant initial payment. New car deals at garages seem to offer better terms. Title: Re: Cars Post by: Chubbs on Thursday, February 18, 2016, 15:22:32 Dont get a ford. :-)

I nip home and low and behold its dead as a dodo. Its not 2 years old yet. My other car is a Focus and the build/paint quality is appalling in comparison to the Honda. I have mate in the car business who once told me that each individual layer of the paint Volvo use is thicker than all the coats of paint Ford put on. It shows. However the Focus drives superbly, it is just let down in other areas. Title: Re: Cars Post by: Sippo on Thursday, February 18, 2016, 16:40:04 Fords are famous for their rust. Take as you find innit. See a lot of prestige cars on the hard shoulder. Big money beemers and mercs seem as likely to break down as a 6 grand dacia Title: Re: Cars Post by: theakston2k on Thursday, February 18, 2016, 17:05:24 I've driven two Fords, a Mondeo and a Focus and on both the alternator failed so not a fan. That said they were work pool cars so probably had a rough life, I'm not a fan of Fords in general though.
When I got my car I maxed the deposit on my RR (30% I think it was) and got a good deal on the finance that way including the servicing so other than the cost of the car and tyres I've spent nothing which has worked for me. Having the piece of mind that a warranty provides can't be understated. That said I'm probably not the best to listen to for advice as I'm about to do something very stupid and upgrade to a Sport SVR as with the fuel prices at a reasonable level now seems as good a time for a petrol V8 as there ever will be. It's been in the shop since then and now has: T5.1 facelift including mirrors Body coloured bumpers Pop top roof with built in bed, colour matched on outside Windows installed in middle third Window in talegate All rear windows blacked out new clutch new DMF Timing belt full service Oil Sound-proofing Heat insulation Full carpet in back Just need to save up now to put the rear seats/bed and split charge system/solar panels, fridge, sink etc. Reckon it's going to cost another £4k or so but I'm moving soon so can bang the cost on the mortgage. I quite fancy getting a double cab Hilux or similar, room for the kids and space to chuck the camping gear and bikes on the back. Title: Re: Cars Post by: Batch on Monday, May 23, 2016, 12:34:43 I don't get it. Drive to hotel. Unpack. Job done.
Title: Re: Cars Post by: horlock07 on Monday, May 23, 2016, 12:43:49 I don't get it. Drive to hotel. Unpack. Job done. That's it, its a lovely idea but £10-15k (plus c.£500 a year maintaining it) buys a lot of nights in hotels/weeks in holiday cottages. I used to work in the trade years ago and it shocked me how much people would spend year on year maintaining the things, don't get me wrong my mate has a lovely T4 and we had a great weekend in Belgium watching the Tour of Flanders earlier this year (it was a little like Max and Paddy!) plus it was dead handy to move stuff when we moved house. Title: Re: Cars Post by: Samdy Gray on Monday, May 23, 2016, 14:04:42 I don't get it. Drive to hotel. Unpack. Job done. Different strokes for different folks. There's nothing better than a decent French campsite, and there are 100's of them. I've recently bought a transit van, and fully intend chucking an airbed, sleeping bag, and calor grill in the back, and heading over there 3 or 4 times this year.going anywhere nice? we are doing a week in Tenerife over half term, can't wait.. Title: Re: Cars Post by: RobertT on Monday, May 23, 2016, 16:02:59 I don't get it. Drive to hotel. Unpack. Job done. I believe I have turned myself into a snob. I can't stand the thought of a holiday involving me staying in facilities worse than my own home. I even turn my nose up at B&B's without en-suite (in this day and age!), in fact, B&B's for a holiday repulse me now. It even annoys me that 2 star is an option on expedia. I like camping, I like going mountain biking, I want a vehicle that I can fit my whole family and kit in and just piss off somewhere at a moment's notice.
On top of all that, the wish to own a camper van was one of the last coherent things my old man said to me before he died and I'm using some of the inheritance he left me to complete his dream and make new memories with my own son. On the list in no particular order: Kia C'eed, Suzuki Swift, Seat Ibiza, Fiesta, Mazda 2 (or 3), Toyota Yaris (or Auris), Honda Jazz. Maybe even a Focus or Astra. Any others/avoids/recommended from that list. Reckon we are looking at 2008/2009 for most of the low mileage example of those. Bit pot luck whether we get a good one or not I suppose (low owners/fsh and hope for best). Fiat Punto's are also not too bad if you're not going that far. You can get them with "City Mode" which makes the steering ridiculously light. In fact I think that comes as standard. Not the best of starts though, totally soaked drivers side footwells the first time it rained. Title: Re: Cars Post by: Simon Pieman on Friday, June 24, 2016, 16:58:50 So after a lot of twatting about on the phone back and forth and the dealer saying they would arrange this and that etc but didn't deliver on their promises, so
I just paid for a fresh MOT test and to check on non-mot items and got better news than expected. One new exhaust section and a driveshaft gaiter later and it's through the MOT. I'll be asking the dealer to foot the bill but it'll probably be a small claims court job but clearly if it failed the MOT it wasn't roadworthy. Don't buy a car from here if you want any sort of after sales service or to actually buy a car which is roadworthy http://www.highburymotors.co.uk/ Title: Re: Cars Post by: Chubbs on Friday, June 24, 2016, 20:05:11 Spent a week on a farm in north Devon in the beemer. I think I have found my favourite road in the UK. The a39 (Atlantic Highway). When clear of cars it is the most fun I have ever had driving. Again the 4WD was fantastic on the corners. Current options of examples I've found include: 2011 Octavia S 1.4ts 2010 Hyundai I30 1.6 2010 Kia Cee'd 1.6 2009 Focus 1.6 Zetec 2008 Mazda 3 1.6 Sport All petrol with around 55k on the clock. Expected more options really, not a major car geek but felt there would be more choice somehow! Opinions welcome on this most exciting selection of vehicles (or any other suggestions). Title: Re: Cars Post by: Batch on Tuesday, October 24, 2017, 07:25:52 I'm also looking for a family petrol car, slightly higher budget. Part of the issue seems to be the rise (and now fall) of the diesel. Loads of them around but the government have a hard on for them. The likely outcome of that outside London is unclear.
Mind you Oxford were wobbling on about possibly banning petrol cars as well from some roads from 2020! Anyway started out at 6-7K budget before a PPI claim came in, I looked at the C'eed, seems OK but the engine is a bit weedy in torque terms. Focus 1.6 seems reliable if not that frugal in MPG. Recently looking at the 2013/14 1.0 ecoboost engine but that has a tendency to ingest its coolant resulting in total engine replacement! Octavia 1.4 - is that the twincharge? A few common faults on this (oil consumption) and the standard 1.4 (EA111) had a few cam chain failures. Google it. Can't comment on the others. And have no further suggestions (Civic, Mondeo and Auris were on my list, but Modeo petrol hard to find non eco-boost, Auris didn't seem as good as Mazda 3 (was looking at 2.0) and Civic still an option but not preferred). Thankfully in no rush so may leave until Jan Feb time. My current favorite is the 138 BHP Octavia 1.4 tsi , but that's why I'm saving-its unlikely to be giving much change out of 10K so well outside budget :( Title: Re: Cars Post by: Simon Pieman on Tuesday, October 24, 2017, 08:28:14 Yep avoid the ecoboost focus Batch, my mates car died due to that fault. Not the top spec I really wanted. On the mileage limit I set (40K) and with a scuff on the rear bumper. But full dealer history, otherwise well looked after and at 7.5k its 2-3.5k cheaper than the top spec garage prices. Er, not actually seen it yet, sent the AA to kick the tires :) Pick it up Sunday. Not the most interesting post in the world, but my first "new" car in just over 9 years so I'm excited :) Just need to get shot of Avensis. 10.5 years old, a few things up with it now and 155K on the clock. Think I'm flogging it to WBAC.com. Will get virtually nothing (may pay for £115 tax on Octavia) but I'd rather do that to shift it quickly. Most complaints (other than the odd fault here and there) I've found found are: - the base level speakers are a bit shit. - the headlights are a bit shit (saying that, unless they are two candles in a jam jar its hard to see how they can be worse than the Avensis). What you do recommend for: 7 seats (5+2 is ok) Room for 2 dogs and 2 kids Cheap to run Somewhat reliable Up to £5k Been looking at an S-Max or Galaxy. Also the Espace/Grand Espace. Probably as reliable as a chocolate teapot but there's just something about them I like. Alternatively, a crew van but most in that budget have sky high mileage and have seen better days. Title: Re: Cars Post by: swindonmaniac on Saturday, March 3, 2018, 17:23:21 Find the vw passat 2.0l diesel estate excellent value for money, + still only £30 a year to tax. Should be able to get one 8-9 years old for that sort of money (possibly later if you're lucky).
Probably find most have a fair bit of mileage on them, but as long as they have been serviced and maintained correctly should be ok. I was lucky, managed to get one just 3 years old, which meant it had been dealer maintained from new, and they don't fuck about, if it needs doing, it's done regardless of cost. Managed to get all paperwork with mine so I know exactly what has been done. Was able to then contact previous owner who confirmed vehicle was trouble free and he didn't really want to get rid of it but it was company policy as warranty was about to run out and the company always released vehicls once they got to that age. And before you ask, have now had it 18 months and only put a cambelt and water pump on, mileage today is 140k and still drives and looks like new. Only 5 seats though, but still room for 2 dogs in the boot. Put 2 golden retrievers in mine comfortably. With the help of bank of mum i picked up a MK5 VW Golf GT TDI. For a 10 year old car it has been looked after well. A few stone chips on the body work but the interior is immaculate. Driving it back from Newbury yesterday it was so smooth and reminded me why i loved my MK4 GTI so much. |
