I've just bought a Kia Pro Ceed. Took it for a test drive this morning and pick it up on Thursday. It's not a prestige marque,  but it's a lovely little car with an impressive spec.

Got 5K to spend on a used family car...

Current options of examples I've found include:

2011 Octavia S 1.4ts
2010 Hyundai I30 1.6
2010 Kia Cee'd 1.6
2009 Focus 1.6 Zetec
2008 Mazda 3 1.6 Sport

All petrol with around 55k on the clock. Expected more options really, not a major car geek but felt there would be more choice somehow!

Opinions welcome on this most exciting selection of vehicles (or any other suggestions).

I'm also looking for a family petrol car, slightly higher budget. Part of the issue seems to be the rise (and now fall) of the diesel. Loads of them around but the government have a hard on for them. The likely outcome of that outside London is unclear.

Mind you Oxford were wobbling on about possibly banning petrol cars as well from some roads from 2020!

Anyway started out at 6-7K budget before a PPI claim came in, I looked at the C'eed, seems OK but the engine is a bit weedy in torque terms.

Focus 1.6 seems reliable if not that frugal in MPG. Recently looking at the 2013/14 1.0 ecoboost engine but that has a tendency to ingest its coolant resulting in total engine replacement!

Octavia 1.4 - is that the twincharge? A few common faults on this (oil consumption) and the standard 1.4 (EA111) had a few cam chain failures. Google it.

Can't comment on the others.  And have no further suggestions (Civic, Mondeo and Auris were on my list, but Modeo petrol hard to find non eco-boost, Auris didn't seem as good as Mazda 3 (was looking at 2.0) and Civic still an option but not preferred).

Thankfully in no rush so may leave until Jan Feb time. My current favorite is the 138 BHP Octavia 1.4 tsi , but that's why I'm saving-its unlikely to be giving much change out of 10K so well outside budget Sad

Yep avoid the ecoboost focus Batch, my mates car died due to that fault. The engine was replaced but he got shot of it soon after

Yup! There is a facebook group with about 300 people on it with mostly 30-50K engines, 2013/14 plates. Fords "service" has been disgusting.

I'm sure you knew all this..

Cheers Batch...silly question but how would I know if the Octavia is Twincharged?  Doesnt say so in the engine spec...

Edit; just read the dodgy twincharged version is 158 BHP? If so this one isn't!

I think it is the 158. I moved on to the newer engine so didn't do too much research.

Not sure of that particular model but quite a few of my colleagues drive Skoda's. These fellas know their cars and they are the most popular brand in our car park by quite a margin. Make of that what you will.
