Title: Swindon vs Woking Official Matchday Thread
Post by: reeves4england on Saturday, November 7, 2009, 12:30:44
Possibly the latest start to an OMDT ever?

I expect us to win today. In previous years non-league opposition has scared the crap out of me, as we lose far too often, but I don't think Wilson will let them get away with going out there with the wrong attitude. A nice early goal would be ideal.

Yes it is rather late isnt it? I think a scrappy 1-0 will do

Think we'll win by 2 or 3, but for selfish reasons wouldn't mind a draw, as it's only a short drive for me for the replay.

Talking of Norwich, they are in control v Paulton, which is a shame

I am going for a 1-1 draw with Woking scoring early, but as stated above....any win will do at this stage after the banana skin of Histon last season and a few home losses to non-league teams in the past such as Dagenham at Home in 84, Stevenage at Home in 98, Tooting and Mitcham in 76 Away and Histon away last year.

No Lucas? Is he injured or totally rested?

Also, what position does Matty Barnes play? Would be interesting to see him and Thompson get some time on the pitch if, say, we managed to get 3 goals up

Same for me. Norwich is cheaper and should be a better game. I know they reduced the prices today but I reckon it still costs a bit more than my season ticket does per game, so bollocks to that - they should have even cheaper prices for season ticket holders.

Given that our players are clearly numbered and have their names on the back of their shirts, it would be nice for the commentator to mention some names once in a while.

"Swindon break, Swindon coming forward, shot from Swindon..."

I think you'd be surprised at just how big some penguins can get.

Similarly, it is very surprising how big an Ostrich actually is. I mean I know they are the biggest birds on Earth and that but they really are very fucking mahoosive and quite a bit scary. You'd need a ladder to fuck an ostrich as well.

Doctor Dave had slept with one of his patients and felt guilty all day long. No matter how much he tried to forget about it, he couldn't. The guilt and sense of betrayal were overwhelming.

But every now and then he'd hear an internal reassuring voice in his head that said: "Dave, don't worry about it. You aren't the first medical practitioner to sleep with one of their patients and you won't be the last. And you're single. Just let it go."

But invariably another voice in his head would bring him back to reality.

Whispering......

Dave........

Dave........

..........you're a vet.

Woking commentators on BBC Radio Surrey seemed surprised we were playing down the clock towards the end.  I can only assume they're fairly new to football.  Innovative tactic, that, when you're defending a 1-0 lead at home in the Cup.

Not a generous win, but fuck it.  We're in Round 2 of the FA Cup.  Job done.

Only positive is that we won and go through. Other than that it was a terrible game of football and more negative tactics at home even against this piss poor team. They were actually awful. Of course they are a non-league team but it took us a set-piece goal to beat them. Only good spell was just after half time but we didn't maintain that standard enough.

Woking were terrible and we should have won by more. If we'd bothered a bit more we could have scored a few more but ah well, we were never once in danger of losing and a good boost for Paynter and the back four. Thought Cuthbert and Greer did a good job at the back. We weren't great, but we didn't have to be.

That's quite a big positive...we know we're not great at home, and these games are seldom easy.

A good draw v a league side and we can keep our once a decade record intact.

Let's be honest it was never going to be a classic and some of the mongs sat around me today were fooking plain irratating.

I thought there keeper made some pretty decent saves for them but Woking were woeful in the final third which was lucky for us.

Amankwaah & Timlin were pure shite today and both were guilty of giving the ball away and puttimng pressure on us.

Paynter & Cuthbert were my MOM today but JPM deserves recognition for  another solid performance. Credit to Smithy too he did well and looks a lot more confident now we have a new coach.

At least we're in the hat for the 2nd round and that's what counts.

I thought we did more than enough to win, should have been a lot easier though.  Woking were pretty poor, although I felt their back four and keeper were good.  The no. 11 should be able to find a career in panto somewhere!!  What happened to the incisive play from last week, early crosses for the strikers to feed off?  Macca should have been supplying them, but he was poor again today.  Was in the members' suite today and a couple of us were ranting about Hutchinson after the game.  Didn't realise that the players come up there to grab something to eat, first player up was Hutchinson who sat down at a table right behind us.  When he got up to go a young lady went with him, she must have heard all our rants and wishing he would fuck off back to Celtic!!

A crap game but we're through and in the hat. Woking were crap apart from the first 20. Their set pieces were pure comedy.  As stated elsewhere their no 11 was priceless.  As for us, Smith came and caught everything - what a change from when he was trying to punch everything. Unlike others I thuoght Manky did well. Kennedy was OK. The middle 2 were very good. JPM was a bit patchy but more good than bad. Ferry drifted in and out of the game but looks a good prospect. Timlin was pure shit. He has sod all presence in the centre and his clearances towards the end showed pure panic. Macca didn't do much. Tope I feel sorry for. He took a load of stick from the fans around me. I don't think he had a good game but he's a young lad starting out. Paynter for me was MOM by a country mile.
All in all a crap afternoon but a job done. Now Scum away - put them in their place on their turf.

That lino flagging to disallow Billy's goal was almost as funny as Woking's no 11 Sam-Yorke.

Phil King said after the match that the flag had been raised for offside (as you guessed Nemo) with Tope being on the goal line....but as any Town fan could have confirmed, even if not at the match, Tope was most unlikely to be interfering with play  (even if he does interfere marginally more often than Hutch).

Title: Re: Swindon vs Woking Official Matchday Thread
Post by: Bennett on Sunday, November 8, 2009, 10:00:07
danny wilson said the lino thought there was an infringement on the keeper, to which the ref said nah i had a perfect view- it's a goal

ferry showed some nice touches but doing the running and work for two seems a bit unfair on the lad. i hope timlin gives him his wages as fuck knows he didn't earn them yesterday.

annyoingly we played quick long ball to two isolated strikers and then seemed surprised when the second balls dropped to the woking midfield.

when tope did get in down the channels (in the first half, before being replaced by someone even less effective) he had BP in the middle to aim at or our midfield just inside their half

very poor show but as has been pointed out, we're through to the next round!

Up until about 5 or 6 years ago, when the BBC were making a big thing of their coverage of the cup, they had some decent all time stats on the cup and in terms of % of games played to wins ratio. STFC used to come in 9 on this list.  Basically it meant historically we were good for winning 2 or 3 games, before going out.

Apart from the odd blip, right up til the mid 90's, we would get the occasional decent result or performance....since then though our record has been quite disgraceful, and daresay we'd no longer feature in that top ten.

I think your all being a tad harsh on us considering you are league 1 and we are conf south. Our players worked very hard, but as the case has been through the whole of this season so far we cant score, and in yesterdays case get a shot on target. As far as your goal was concerned I felt one of your players was interfering with play whilst in an offside position. After talking to our keeper after the game he said he was blocked from seeing the ball properly http://www.wokingfc.co.uk/gallery/images/woking_2009_10/swindon_1_-_woking_0/swi34.jpg (http://www.wokingfc.co.uk/gallery/images/woking_2009_10/swindon_1_-_woking_0/swi34.jpg)

I'll give Woking some respect. Great support. They also played some neat triangles in the 1st half and kept the ball very well. They worked hard, and kept themselves in the game right to the end. But it ends there.

The number 11 was the worst player Ive ever seen at the County Ground for a competitive match. He dribbled the ball out of play with his first touches, there wasnt even a Town player that near him! The number 10 was also woeful. The 2 free kicks were an absolute joke, especially the one that bounced off the Town End roof. Mouthy Nicolau was an average player for Woking and even got subbed, just another player with no consistancy and no humility. The linesman is a total twat, they had two defenders on the line, and it was a corner so the ball travelled backwards anyway. Shocking.

For us I thought Paynter, Ferry, McGovern, Cuthbert and Smith had good games. They approached it in exactly the right way and worked hard. Greer didnt have a bad game, but seemed strangely off the pace (has he got a flu or something). Timlin's confidence looks shot to pieces and he lacked composure throughout the match. But the biggest dissapointment for me was Amankwaah and McNamee. Amankwaah wasnt bad, but he didnt show any endeavour, despite being up against the poorest player on the pitch. He needs to put this Harris thing behind him and get his confidence back. At his best he is a match winner, its not often you say that about a right back. McNamee didnt seem interested at all. I think Mark Marshall would have done better. Probably saving himself for the visit of Norwich on tuesday which is totally unnacceptable. If O'brien is fit then I hope he comes into the team, because some of our players are picking and choosing their games.

Half our team played well and it was only just enough. Same old problem, the team seems unprepared for playing with a 1-0 lead.

I'll give Woking some respect too.

Worse performances have earned 0-0's.  Worner in goal looked sound as did the defence as a whole including their Hutchinson.  Arter, and Thomas when he came on, showed some enthusiasm and bite and Anane on the right showed good skills early on.

Although Smith in goal had to show good alertness on a few occasions he didn't really have a save to make.  Woking were very unthreatening up front however and are one of the few teams not to have scored against us in the last 10 minutes all season.

The Woking Fans were a disgrace too.  Really proud about the way our fans observed the full 90 minutes silence for Remembrance day.

Cuthbert is our best player now isn't he?

And incidentally, the squawking noise has been a feature of Town games both home and away for several seasons now.

It's normally in the TE though, probably the first time a few have heard it.

I didn't think Amankwaah was that bad?? Nor Greer either, they weren't at their best but as said before, we didn't need to be close to our best really as Woking were poor.

amankwaa kept playing clipped balls over the top which their defenders dealt with every time.apart from short passes an 8 year old could have made ,he lost the ball time after time.
very poor performance from him.

When he gets going he really does ravage defenses (Amankwaah).

We were only just good enough.

I think Charlton's exit to NV shows what a fine line there can be in the cup, even if you are half decent.

The linesman is a total twat, they had two defenders on the line, and it was a corner so the ball travelled backwards anyway. Shocking.

The free-kick wasn't give offside straight from the corner, that's kinda obvious that the lino wouldn't be that stupid. The offside was given when the player was in front of the keeper as the ball was headed. We will have highlights tomorrow so might be easier to tell what actually happened.

Yes but even then there was no other contact from any player so the ball was played from the corner and therefore the player in question (Billy) simply cannot be offside regardless of whether he was infront of the keeper or not.

Saw the goal highlight, wasn't at the match. Topi was offside when the ball was headed by Billy. He was standing very close to their keeper and rushed out after the header. Whether or not he was 'interfering' is subjective I suppose. I'm glad it went in our favour.

Anyone not intefering with play when they are on the pitch should be subbed.

Yep. And every Wokinng attack seemed to end in either a tackle or a routine catch for Phil Smith. If we'd actually played well we would have slaughtered them!

At about 3 minutes in I thought the Woking commentator was going to cream himself when Anande was dribbling his way through!
