Title: Southampton v Swindon Matchday Thread
Post by: sonicyouth on Tuesday, August 31, 2010, 11:59:51
Apparently a 7:45 kick-off though I thought this tinpotpaintpot cup had early kick-off times?

Nope - 7:45pm kick off!

Isn't the prize usually some B&Q or Wickes vouchers? We could finish re-paintnig the Arkells stand if we win! :-)

Some are 7pm but most are 7:45pm.

It will be a late one if extra time and pens are on.

And we'll be wearing out shiny new 3rd kit tonight too!  :-[

Wouldn't it be funny if someone forgot to tell David Lucas he's going to have to wear his "home" grey goalie shirt though instead of the normal away "black" one as they look awfully similar.

3rd Kit:                   http://www.swindontownfc.co.uk/javaImages/3d/fd/0,,10341~8781117,00.jpg (http://www.swindontownfc.co.uk/javaImages/3d/fd/0,,10341~8781117,00.jpg)

Oh, by the way I'm prediciting a hard fought battle in which we eventually triumph 3-1, and the STFC MOM will be...... Vincent Pericard!  Or maybe I'm just daydreaming again...

I'm not going. Saving up for Walsall, Dagenham and Yeovil.

A win would be welcome here, even if it is only the JPT. Would at least give our team some much-needed confidence going into a tricky Carlisle trip.

Will probably be lucky to have 150 there tonight and less than 5k crowd in total....that is unless the Saints fans are going out to vent their spleen at the board, in which case it may reach 7k.

Can't see us winning tonight unfortunatly.

Im guessing there is no need to do the away fan park and ride thing due to small crowd.

Theres quite a bit of parking around the ground. If you follow the road away from st.marys behind the northam, you will go past a pub. The Joshua Tree?, i think it is, and there is plenty down there, 5-10 minuite walk from the ground.

There used to be a direct train to Southampton every hour from Swindon station just a few years ago. It got scrapped, was never busy enough I guess and it took ages.

Bit of a roundabout route these days....the old M and SWR, used to go from Old Town, via Marlborough, Ludgershall to Andover.....more or less due south as the bird flies. back in time for a pint in the Wheatsheaf or Steam.

Boston > Journey

They played Journey at Charlton in the play offs at half time, and we didnt stop believing (I already had!!) and it was the best night in years. I fell in total love with that song.

It was also played at half time at Wembley and we didnt come back, thus I cant even listen to it anymore.

That Boston song reminds me of the air band in scubs!

We have quality players who seem to express themselfs better in the big games(Wembley aside)
Its just a matter of getting a formula of making sure the players seem to judge all games as big.

I actually think we'll win this game. Hopefully a win will give us confidence to get the 3 points on Saturday (and to keep Rose and Prutton on the bench!)

See  :D

I'm sure Vince will add to his tally against his former club on Saturday. Great result.

Incredible stuff, it may 'only' have been the JPT but that was against a strong Southampton team on their own patch. Shows that we do still have it in us to beat the best, just hope we kick on from here and do the same at Carlisle on Saturday, Wilson should definitely stick with the same team, sounds like Ferry made a massive difference and Big Vince is going to be unstoppable now!

While preferring to win than lose, some get as carried away in positivity to the mirrored extent that thisis mongs get carried away into negativity.

It was a cup game.....Soton having won the thing last season and managerless, were never likely to be that focused on this.....Saturday is when we need to do some business.

Just got back (live in Soton).

Ferry made the difference today, he ran around the whole pitch and put pressure on their players.  He needs to start along side either Dougie or Prutton.

Still think we look shakey in defence.  The two cb's had good games, but Amankwaah was a bit shakey.

Pericard did well upfront but i still think people will moan about him in the future.  His problem is that he wont chase after every ball.  When he scores no one cares.  However when hes on a goal-less drought, people pick up on his lack of work ethic.

Overall happy with the result and display.  Would like the same team on sat except replace Amankwaah with Caddis and Prutton for Dougie (unless Dougie is fit)

Prutton would spend half the time worrying about where douglas's shadow is and not really concentrating on the game!

Title: Re: Southampton v Swindon Matchday Thread
Post by: jb on Tuesday, August 31, 2010, 21:44:40
I don't think Prutton would be AS bad if he played with Ferry, he can then do what he's been trying to do all season and dictate the play.

Title: Re: Southampton v Swindon Matchday Thread
Post by: Don Rogers Shop on Tuesday, August 31, 2010, 21:47:31
That's true about Prutton i think half the problem with douglas and prutton is they are both very simalar players. I said when we signed him that he is a poor mans douglas and that hasn't changed imo. If they are not playing alongside eachother in a basic 2 in the middle i think he will be ok.

Title: Re: Southampton v Swindon Matchday Thread

yes he would because he would have no one to hide behind and would be totally exposed to all sorts.

You watch the character flaws stream to the surface then.

With Dougie playing so close to him thus far he has been able to deflect the blame.

He will not like it one iota having to stand on his own to feet and battle, rather than walking around preening himself thinking that we all have a hard on over him

Title: Re: Southampton v Swindon Matchday Thread
Post by: Bennett on Tuesday, August 31, 2010, 21:50:01
i think prutton does well when the game is stretched and there's space to move into, where as when there's 4 midfielders and then 4 defenders in front of him he looks a bit confused and tries stupidly over the top passes.

him and ferry could work but the only constant i'd have is ferry

agreed in sorts

All I know, and I know I have harped on about it, is that JD and Prutton are too similar players, both like to sit deep and try and control from that position. They will not and can never work together. The one constant from now has got to be Ferry, he gives us a bite and legs to go and make things happen and support.

Who knows, Frerry and Prutton may be a good combo, but at the moment, I would like to see what I know and trust will work, and thats a Douglas, Ferry partnership.

Prutton will have to come in, grab his chance, and change my mind.

second goal is a fucking beauty, the build up and finish is as good as anything from last season

Fantastic second goal, you just gotta check it out when the highlights appear.
Kev passed it through the legs of Saints player, down the line to JP, he backheeled it back to Kev who put a beautiful ball through to Charlie who ran on and then thumped in a beautiful finish. The whole move looked really classy, and wouldn't have been out of place in the Prem.

Big Vince played well, he held up the ball well and was very accurate with his passing AND HE SCORED ! Both goals were very well set up for him, and the finishes were relatively straightforward, but hey - he's off the mark, who knows what'll happen now !

The WHOLE team played really well, including the fringe players like Timms, Calum and even Will Evans, who didn't look out of place.

MoM was def Ferry - his energy, his insight, his battling determination and most of all, his creative FORWARD passing (Prutton, take note !) was a breath of fresh air - we've been missing this for a while and he MUST play on saturday.

All in all, very encouraging - now need to carry this through to their League performances !

Black kit looking pretty good.

Well chuffed for Vinnie P. Looking forward to seeing the goals. Almost went to this until I remembered it was my lil half brothers birthday :( sounds like a lot of positives to take from tonight - not that beating recent offerings would take much!

Carlisle will be shaken by the loss of Harte today. Vince to get his first league goals back at his old ground? We all know how football works...

That's fucking ace. I have a feeling he could become a hated player, like a Bellamy or Roberts, because he's started to get quite an attitude on the pitch. I said last season that his attitude is becoming a bit like Alan Shearer, albeit less dirty and more niggly. Certainly doesn't mind throwing an elbow or going for headers he won't get, which is nice.

the saints fans acted as if i had just fingered their daughter.

Anyone figured out the Barnard red card?

Adver and the BBC commentary say it was two yellows (one after the other, one for the tackle and the other for the afters) but having watched the very brief highlights on Sky it looked like a straight red for a dangerous two footed tackle (no sign of a yellow but they may have edited it).

Though I also heard a bizarre explanation from one of their forums, that the ref meant to show a yellow but showed a red by accident and then once he'd shown the red he couldn't retract it so it had to stand. Which is complete bollocks.

I went to the game and saw a yellow card, followed by a red.  No second yellow. Makes no sense.

I assumed it was a second yellow for a player who had already been booked.  The fact it was a player who'd only been on the pitch 10 minutes is odd.

Must have been a yellow card in error....

A straight red for violent conduct is a 3 match ban, which will mean he will be.

That makes the most sense. The tackle looked like a straight red - he went in with his studs and both feet off the ground.

Fingers crossed that is what happened as it will be a 3 game ban ruling him out of the league match.

I saw the highlights on SSN earlier, the new kit looks smart and pericard's first was a great finish as was austin's. Pericard's second was the sort of goal that wouldnt have gone in for him a week ago. Barnard's red card was a bit soft but he went in with studs up so I guess some refs see that as a red card offence. Young Evans is a fucking beast! how old is he? He was taller than manks anyways and wasn't shy of standing up to barnard and telling what he thought of the tackle!

I hope we play with the same system saturday if douglas is fit play him if not play evans - like dave said if it aint broke dont fix it!

I wish Wilson would give the youngsters more games though. If Evans played that well last night why not give him another go at the weekend? Same for Kennedy. LJF and Morrison have done well this season, having Wilson say he wants to sign another CB can't be good for their confidence either.

I agree and firstly I thought centre-back was the main area for concern as well but I really think Rose has been the weak link in the side all along. He seems to get caught out of position too often meaning the centre-backs have to come across and deal with the danger. For example at brighton at home Rose was caught out of position and slipped over LJF came out of defence to challenge the man with the ball meaning JD had to try and get back handing sparrow the time and space to pick his spot. Against brentford I felt we seemed to play much better after Callum Kennedy came on he's suprisingly comfortable on the ball for a young lad. Again last night kennedy played we sounded like we were more solid as a whole.

On Evans I think Douglas should start if he's fit but if not Evans should play it might give prutton a boot up the back side!

Btw I do think we need another centre back like wilson said three isnt enough to get us through the season.

The narrow diamond was worked on in pre season, and in theory gives the FBs a chance to get forward while being very narrow and solid when not in possession. Wouldn't mind seeing it again on Saturday, but with Dossevi at the front point, Dougie in the DM, and Ferry and Timlin or JPM

4 keepers is plenty and I'm more than happy with those keepers. I'm also happy with our cover at centre half and up front. I wasn't meaning to imply we don't have cover in those areas, just not as much versatility. I was trying to show how many positions some of our team can play in by way of cover or switching formations without subs etc.

Because football is a results business and as idealistic as playing youngsters may sound Wilson's main priority is going to be to play what he considers his best starting XI. Even in the JPT Fitton has expressed a desire to win it so we need to take the thing seriously. Like it or not the youngsters are there to fill gaps when there are no other players available like at every other football club.
This is why we'd all be crap managers of STFC as we'd let sentiment and emotion cloud basic common sense.

The ground OB makes up is incredible.

Haven't been along this year yet - and whenever I saw O'Brien last year he looked a fish out of water - like a Boyzone'd Ricky Shakes.

That pace was unbelievable though - keep him fit and he could be a great impact sub against a knackered full back on the right or left. Ideally, we've got to want a more rounded player as first choice in there, but he could....could, be worth his place in the squad on that evidence.
