I hope we don't get tonked today, we've gone the whole season without doing so it would be a shame to undo this on the last day.

Either way, we're safe... Phew.

I don't really care about the result, I just want to have a good day out.

Working again, so won't even be able to follow it on here. All I want is a stack of goals for Coxy as I could frankly do with the money.

How much do people have on the Cox then?

£3 at 20/1 to be top scorer only here, not as good as some but it's still a nice £60 if he can bury a few today.

I don't even care if we get dicked, its totally meaningless. Half this team will be gone next year anyway.

It'd be nice for Cox to get atleast 2 though - partly for his value, partly for some recognition for the club, and partly for all those of you who'll win money off it!

I'll probably listen but I'm not going to concern myself with a result.

Looks like Brez is off then. Nalis gets his swansong. Perhaps a chance for Easton, Lescinal and Razak to earn deals?

Not to Shaw about that line up

Lescinel,Easton playing for contracts. Razak and marshal will come on as they ar eplaying for contracts aswell. No keeper on the bench doesnt surprise me.

Oh yeah = Nalis last game - bound to come off to a nice round of applause from everyone for a good career.

What an expensive decision it was for them when Cox decided to sign for us, and on the flip side what an important decision for us.

The decision could have gone either way by all accounts, it's a funny old game.

I think the bookies wouldn't know what to do. probably say nobody won, and only pay out to people who put e/w bets on, because both player would be top 4

That last post was Ardiles Jnr's (aged 11 months) first post on the Town End.

Anyone else watching out for other games this afternoon - now that ours doesn't have too much riding on it?  The Southern Premier play off final stands Farnborough 0-1 Gloucester City at half time.  I live in Farnborough but have friends who support City.  I feel a little torn, to be honest.

The Cobblers have bottled it at just the wrong time.  Two weeks ago I was sure they were safe with their run in and games in hand.  Fair play to Carlisle for doing exactly the opposite.

All down to Stockport now.

Lambert Bristol Rovers 28
Cox Swindon 27
Beckford Leeds United 26
Fryatt Leicester 26

Not a bad way to end the season.  Thanks for the goals, Coxy.  Wish you all the best for the future (and hope your post-Town career is more successful than SSP's).

For anyone still on the edge of their seats about the Southern Premier play off final, it finished Farnborough 0-1 Gloucester City.  Gloucester hate Cheltenham, so a good season for them.

Post by: DiV on Saturday, May 2, 2009, 18:45:18
Just got back

First off big congratulations to my Lord Simon Cox, by far and away the BEST striker in this division by some distance. He's made alot of Swindon fans richer tonight as alot of us jumped on the odds of 50/1 pre season.

Decent game of football. Thought we played well first half and really took the game to Posh, we didnt create much but were on top. Coxy gets one and we carry on doing our best to spoil the party, sort of...

Posh threaten and get a goal from a corner which at that point I dont think they deserved. Didnt last long as Coxy got another one to the chorus of 50 to 1 my lord, 50 to 1.

We deserved our lead at half time.

Second half was all Posh mainly. Smith (who defo needs a contract for next season) pulled off some really good saves, we hacked one of line and then they got a penalty - no idea what is for I was at the other end. Good save - another one off the line.

As soon as Ifil gave away that free kick Keates was going to score. He did similiar for Walsall two seasons ago, injury time last game of the season stunning equalizer.

Other highlights. Lillian Nalis last game so his young daughter was on the pitch with the players before the game - she pretty good. She ran into the box and Brez came diving out and she just dinked it over him into the net - pure quality!!! Half time she came out, Marshall put in a cross and she did a bicycle kick!

Fans, ours were ****ing excellent. 95 minutes of pure noise and singing. I was obviously stood right in the middle of it all but it sounded immense.

Didnt hear much out of the Peterborough fans at all. Made some noise when they got their second and that was it, again might have just been where I was sitting.

So much for home fans in the away end as there were a fair few empty seats in the home ends.

Top day out. Out downside was their last minute equalizer (again) but it didnt fucking matter.

good luck next season Posh.

I agree with DV - we deserved to win the game and their fans were crap. Although in fairness their few thousand proper fans probably found it difficult to get an atmosphere going with all the plastics who'd jammed in for the last game of the season to ride on some reflected glory. Wonder how many of those in the newly minted promotion T-shirts have actually been to see their new heroes before today? And yes, I know we'd have the same here in the same circumstances, but my God they were quiet. We stayed behind to see some of their promotion celebrations and they didn't even make that much noise waiting for the players to come out to celebrate. Quite odd

Cox two chances, two great finishes.
He must be man of the match - no I'm afraid not - Smith was aweseome, dont think I've seen a better goalkeeping performance this season.

On the downer, dont think I've seen a poorer performance from Billy Paynter this season either.

I probably overstated that in my enthusiasm :) I was mainly agreeing with DV about their plastic-heavy crowd being a bit rubbish. But i thought we played well in a good game. And yes I didn't give Smith the credit he deserves, played really well today (as he has done since coming back in to be fair). Shame he'll never be given any credit by some of our fans and that as much as anything I think will see him leave this summer. Good luck to him wherever he plays next season

Peterborough, the most pathetic ever attempt at a promotion party atmosphere. Ive always thought of them as pretty sleepy.

Good day out. Good end to the season.

Just to add my appreciation thanks Coxy -390 quid better off!!!
My mate put bets on Coxy outright and each way and a small hedge on Lambert outright which would recover his stake on the Coxy bets if they didn't work out, so I was texting him throughout the game yesterday. He rang me when we were on the way home yesterday and William Hill are paying him in full on all of them so he's 1300 quid better off. Not sure whether to be dead chuffed for him or annoyed at myself for not lumping on myself - I gave him the tip!

Just to open this one up, I bet with Will Hill online and they paid out 390 on a tenner each way but if Paul d's mate as per the above used Will Hill and got full payout, should I query it with them or not?  I'm not sure on the betting malarky so just wanted to some professional opinions before I make a tit out of myself.  I'm more than happy with what ive got by the way, but just a curious question really!

Similar story here, only half pay-out, didnt even get the money i put on back. Mind you i didn't put e/w so the cases are different. after reading paul d's post i e-mailed WillHill about it anyway, i don't expect to hear back from them today though.

I'd imagine it's all automated, so either Paul's mate got half on the win or he's gone to a bookies shop and got lucky(ier)!

You should have got half your stake back though, you lose the other half due to dead heat rules. I expect Will Hill will only tell you dead heat rules apply when they email back.

Well that was a different experience seeing a Posh game in the away end. Stood on the right hand side behind the swindon firm. Must say the view is rubbish. Far too shallow

As for the match a bit of a cliched game of two halves. You in the first, us in the second. Loads of movement and energy from you guys and we floundered. I had to applaud Cox's first, looked a lovely strike. The second had me swearing.
Posh played within themselves which is undestandable and we wasted enough chances not to rely on a 93rd minute free-kick. But i'm well pleased to have been right behind it so i could take in its beautiful arc!

Thought your support was excellent from the start. Clapped my hands a bit at the start and sang about shooting the oxford scum. Then the paranoia wore off. Wasn't sure about the 'championship your having a laugh' song. I pretended to look at my mobile when that one kept starting up haha.
Was happy to applaud Simon Cox off at the end tho. CMS could do with a lesson in finishing from him.

Now for the Posh support. Almost every home game we get away fans mugging off the home support. Last year this was generally correct, but this year has been a different story.
I made a point of watching the Poshies. Its true there fleeting moments in the 2nd half when noise was being made, but i think this is the family stand waking up and joining in every so often. The LR end must have been noisy for quite long periods as i could see them clapping in unison and jumping around but coudn't hear a peep, just the drum now and again. So IMO definitely the asbestos acoustics are having an impact. Oh well, it'll be the barnsley male voice choir having a go next season soapy tit wank!

Good luck next year. Three more 'were too good for this league' are coming down. Hope you give em a dishing!

There were a few fans in end opposite that made a bit of noise and there was a drum (bloody drums!). Most areas of the ground were sat still though.

It makes me laugh when fans use the poor acoustics argument. Our fans have said it of the Town End in our ground, but whenever I haven't been in it and the fans have sung I've always heard them fine. Obviously poor acoustics can be detrimental, but if the majority of fans sing then you still hear them.

When you equalised at the end I heard the fans wake up then. I certainly saw them jumping up and down and clapping too. That's how I expected it to be over the entire course of the game.

Anyway, well done for getting promoted.

It was quiet obvious you have a decent side, but it wouldn't be football without a wind up would it?  Actually quiet liked your ground, but if it's right what you say about the acoustics, it would be worth looking at that in the summer, as that can only help you stay up. Impressed with the town in general, the centre was very appealing, good day out all round.

I think I might be the first to say, oh, how funny to see so many long faced Reading fans walking around the village this afternoon, bless!!!

It always comes across diluted on the telly. Anyone who has been away knows the score. We took over their party and they know it. My missus (who I took yesterday) wants to do more away games next season, and I agree totally. We sit as ST holders in the DRS, and though you can get an atmosphere going, it is usually average to poor; away from home is fun

We have this every week. It's not that the noise doesn't get out - it does. It's just so loud in the ends that you can't hear anything else if there's any more than a murmur.

I could see you Swindon fans waving your hands a lot on Sat, but didn't hear you sing once. Not even when you scored.

Your team looked good on Saturday and I'm surprised that you were so low in the table. If you play like you did in the first half, you'll be up near the top next year.

That lad Cox would look very pretty on our bench next year.  ;)

Funny how you say that, when some Peterborough fans I've been talking to have said we were one of the loudest set of fans to visit London Road this season. There's no way you can say you created an atmosphere Saturday, no way at all.

Only when they scored did I actually see there fans move/clap. I definitely heard them before the kick-off and thought it was going to be a great atmosphere, but once the game started nothing apart from that flipping drum.
In the first half I stood right in the middle of the main Swindon singing lot, second half I moved across to left hand side and the noise from the Swindon fans was very loud, still heard nothing from Peterborough. They were quieter than Leicester and that is saying something.

I was dissapointed with it. At these end of season games I always hope to go and see a set of fans on a real high about their football.

Yes they went up last week. But Peterborough getting promoted to that league is still a once in 20 year event.

I dont know if the fault is with modern football or modern fans. But somewhere along the lines football needs to get more excited. For me, saturday was a prime example of a ground full of people who didnt have a clue about football.

Peterborough have had back-to-back promotions, so the excitement is probably diminished slightly.

If they had spent 5+ years here then they'd have more of an understanding of what it is to get out of this league.

Once the manager leaves, the current crop is sold off, and the chairman gets bored, then I see them going back to League 2 to be honest, so I hope they enjoy it whilst it lasts.

Isn't their chairman meant to be abit dodgy with his company making a few appearances on Watchdog? I can't see him staying long term and can only imagine when he does leave he'll leave behind a whole heap of problems.
Europe in 6 years .........don't make me laugh Peterborough are a mid-table league 1 team at best and are just riding a bit of wave at the moment which won't last forever. Next season they'll be competing with teams that have equal and greater spending power than them so won't find life so easy.

Peterborough were on our local news programme tonight as they had an open bus go round Peterborough, only 3000 people turned up. Now i know they finished 2nd and didn't win the league, but i thought that was a poor turn out for a side which has just won consecutive promotions.

And they are aiming to get into the Premier League within the next two years they said! As posts have said above, dream on. They would need a new ground, doubt they would get the attendances to finance it and as soon as the chairman walks, they would be stuffed.

I think it would affect them more than it would us. He has certainly financed the team more, they don't have a big support generally so he must be subsidising that as well.

At least our board are running the club so we don't make a loss now, so i believe, so if they walked we should still be solvent.

If the Peterborough chairman walked then i think they would come straight back down.

While that may be their ultimate intention, we are a long way from that at the moment.

They are expecting to make a big loss for this season, mainly down to the huge squad we have of players who dont (or cant) play.

This will reduce massively in the Summer due to all the contracts expiring but even then they are not expecting to reach break-even unless players are sold to make up the difference.

I haven’t posted on this subject yet, but having read 18 pages this morning (good way to start a Monday), I thought I’d raise a few points.

Fair play to all who went, I must admit I decided not to at 4.40pm against Rovers – having read the posts I am regretting that decesion.  It sounds like there were few up there and as was mentioned, first away game on last day of the season for years (Stoke must have been the last???).  I have been to Posh’s stadium a couple of times and it’s a proper ground with a decent sized covered away terrace, how many of them are left in the football league?  It’s a shame that now they have been promoted no doubt they will chuck a load of seats on it and think about relocating to an out of town stadium.   Given London Road or some non descript, soulless, out of town, plastic, mono structure, I know which one I would choose every time.  The advent of this type of stadia may be great for the coffers of our beloved football clubs, but watching football post Taylor report can be pretty dull. In my opinion it won’t be long before we can’t shout, swear or raise our voices at football matches.   Now don’t get me wrong, I would love to be in Posh’s shoes and celebrating a promotion, however I would still view with caution – especially when I will have trouble getting tickets to the big games next season cos some bloke who hasn’t been since last time they were in the championship has decided Arsenal/man u etc can wait a season.  Doing a Wigan would be even worse.  No doubt Franchise will be in eth top flight sooner rather than later and I genuinley can't be arsed mixing with them types.

The issue with fans/atmos is probably similar to our game against Stockport in 96, awful atmos, about 400 Stockport fans out sang us for the entire game.  Unfortunately that’s what happens when half the ground is full of debutants.  As has been mentioned our home support / noise has been awful this season, in my view this is because everyone is dotted around the ground due to season tickets pricing - hopeflly that will chaneg nexty season.

Finally – Championship coverage on Sunday was rubbish, 10 seconds of Cox’s goal and that was it.  Did anyone see the Oldham fans sat in their away end, to a man they were in fancy dress - the bloke dressed as a Rubiks cube was quality!!!

PS All drums / musical instruments at football can fcuk off.

Ooops! Clarification - had a message from my mate earlier today and apparently he was given the wrong info when he rang to check on Saturday. He rang up around 5-ish on Sat and was told they'd pay out in full, but has now checked and they've only paid halves, so looks like whoever he spoke to at Billy Hills was giving out duff info. Mind, he's still several hundred quid better off than I am and had a fun weekend before he checked mentally spending over a grand (fortunately he didn't actually go out and spend on the back of it)
