Parkin can't be a "cult" hero though, can he? He's more your traditional hero.
Darren Bullock might have had that status.
Bobby Howe, absolutely, crap but loved.
Charlie Henry was one a while back I guess.
Reeves I suppose might also challenge for cult status as opposed to being a normal hero. Most of his supoort seemed to build up once he'd had his worst spell as a player. If he was still playing a hurried punt into orbit and over the stand would be greeted with smiles and loud voices shouting Reeeeeves. Ifil doing the exact same thing would get half the crowd muttering about his uselessness at distribution.

I'm surprised that in a thread about cult heroes. no one has mentioned Dave Bamber - the ultimate cult hero surely?
He didn't look remotely like a footballer and I remember the first time I ever heard the 'Where's your caravan?' song. It was in 1987 at Elland Road and was directed, understandably, at Big Dave.
What a player though. Unorthodox? You bet, but a genuine match winner.

I'd nominate Steve Jenkins as a potential cult hero. He not especially good but looks like he sleeps on a park bench, when most footballers spend half their day gettin g their hair done. He also says great things like "we got the game" to the adver. In my eyes the true cult hero of the current squad. Its just I dont really think anyone else agrees.  |
