A motherboard is the heart of the computer which allows you to connect things to it (e.g. hard drive). The processor and the memory are components of a working motherboard. The problem is that a motherboard may not be able to handle a bigger processor so an upgrade of both may be necessary. Now this poses another problem. Because you have a Dell, you may not be able to fit a different type of motherboard in your machine. Before continuing this fascinatingly geeky prose - why do you want to upgrade your motherboard/processor. If your PC is getting slow it may mean you need more memory (RAM) not processor speed.

Hang on - you want to upgrade to a 3ghz from a 2.8ghz? Not sure if there would be much advantage, especially at over £350 :?

Hang on - you want to upgrade to a 3ghz from a 2.8ghz? Not sure if there would be much advantage, especially at over £350 :? how do i speed my system up? i noticed with different Dell machines it's the mothorboard they change which can handel the extra power etc. my system is: OS Name Microsoft Windows XP Home Edition Version 5.1.2600 Service Pack 2 Build 2600 OS Manufacturer Microsoft Corporation System Name System Manufacturer Dell Computer Corporation System Model Dimension 2400 System Type X86-based PC Processor x86 Family 15 Model 2 Stepping 9 GenuineIntel ~2790 Mhz BIOS Version/Date Dell Computer Corporation A05, 02/12/2003 SMBIOS Version 2.3 Windows Directory C:\WINDOWS System Directory C:\WINDOWS\system32 Boot Device \Device\HarddiskVolume2 Locale United Kingdom Hardware Abstraction Layer Version = "5.1.2600.2180 (xpsp_sp2_rtm.040803-2158)" User Name Time Zone GMT Standard Time Total Physical Memory 1,024.00 MB Available Physical Memory 545.91 MB Total Virtual Memory 2.00 GB Available Virtual Memory 1.96 GB Page File Space 1.64 GB Page File C:\pagefile.sys

You have 512MB of Ram - upping this to either 1 or 2 gig will speed things up a lot, and is a damn site cheaper than new mobo and processor (under a ton)!
Also, dell are sneaky fucks, you'll probably find it hard to get a mobo that fits in their case, they usually build their PC's to spec and build them in such a way that makes it almost impossible to upgrade them.
Also, for £350 - you can get a whole new PC - I build them for under £300 with minimum of 1GB RAM, AMD 3GHZ processor, 80GB HD etc etc etc...
Plus, if you buy that mobo you'll probably find the existing RAM you have wont work in it, so you'll be spending more cash on RAM...

Firstly, before you fork out a shit load of money there are a few things you need to do. If, for instance a bit of spyware/adware/a virus/or a legit program is causing the problem, an upgrade of hardware will make little difference. Download hijack this and run it (do a system scan and save log file). It will give you a text document that is far from plain english. Copy all of the text from the text file and paste it into this forum. I will see if you have any issues with running processes. http://www.mmdirect.de/downloads/hijackthis_199.zipNext - have you defragmented your hard drive recently? If no do so. If you don't know how to just ask me in a reply. Also what size hard drive do you have and how much free space is left? If answer those questions I will see if there is anything you can do. You have a lot of free memory left, although you are using half, which is a worry. My suspicions are that you have too much running in the background. But we'll address that after the hijack this thing is done.
