You have 512MB of Ram - upping this to either 1 or 2 gig will speed things up a lot, and is a damn site cheaper than new mobo and processor (under a ton)!

Also, dell are sneaky fucks, you'll probably find it hard to get a mobo that fits in their case, they usually build their PC's to spec and build them in such a way that makes it almost impossible to upgrade them.

Also, for £350 - you can get a whole new PC - I build them for under £300 with minimum of 1GB RAM, AMD 3GHZ processor, 80GB HD etc etc etc...

Plus, if you buy that mobo you'll probably find the existing RAM you have wont work in it, so you'll be spending more cash on RAM...

But he has 1gb already. I have a hunch that he has onboard graphics (integrated) which could explain the slowness.

i do yes and have no way of knowing how to get rid of them.

everytime i go into System devices it is there. i have dissabled it but when i delete it or ask it to uninstall the minute i start my machine up again it tells me it has found new hardware etc and re-installs it. really annoying

Firstly, before you fork out a shit load of money there are a few things you need to do. If, for instance a bit of spyware/adware/a virus/or a legit program is causing the problem, an upgrade of hardware will make little difference.


Download hijack this and run it (do a system scan and save log file). It will give you a text document that is far from plain english. Copy all of the text from the text file and paste it into this forum. I will see if you have any issues with running processes.

Next - have you defragmented your hard drive recently? If no do so. If you don't know how to just ask me in a reply. Also what size hard drive do you have and how much free space is left?

If answer those questions I will see if there is anything you can do. You have a lot of free memory left, although you are using half, which is a worry. My suspicions are that you have too much running in the background. But we'll address that after the hijack this thing is done.

Ok mate, apart from some active x controls that you might want to delete, you largely look ok. It also seems like you have a seperate graphics card which looks good. What hard drive do you have and how full is this (right click the c: in my computer and select properties to find out). It might be worth a defrag if you haven't already done so. When is your pc slow (playing games, upon startup, or just in general)?
