I know you've been watching the town for many a year and to settle an arguement I'm having with my dad, who would you consider our main rivals: Oxford or Bristol City??

I dont know that much - but i definetly know its Oxford.  Heard through the grapevine something about fights between Swindon and Oxford fans before Oxford had a real loyalist fanbase??

Nothing with Brizzle has ever come near.  (Not to sure on all of that though)

Plus Oxford is a lot nearer, Brizzle also have their own main rivals Rovers.

I'd inherited a healthy dislike of Bristhole, before O*ford were even in the League....and as such have loathed them with a passion ever since.

I recall the first visit to  The Manor.....when it was very much like visiting a non league ground in the cup.....bit of a laugh...their fans a bit simple.

But for younger fans it has to be O*frod......so for most, our main rivals are O*ford.

Bristhole fans have always been inherently more unpleasnt than anything O*frod could put into the field both in terms of quality and quantity and in the 70's and 80's  there were some genuinely nasty stuff.

The worst I've ever seen at the CG probably involved Rovers around 82, and rumour had their numbers were swollen by Shitheads looking for action.

Why don't we have much of a rivalry with Bristol Rovers out of interest?

Come on someone answer that because I have thought about that loads of times. Same as we dont have a rivalry with Cheltenham.

Rovers fans hate Shitheads, Swindon fans also hate Shitheads...so its a case of "the enemy of my enemy is my friend"

traditionally reading were our sworn enemy until little non-leauge oxford came onto the scene and they have taken over the mantle, city rovers are too fucked over each other to really give enough of a shit about us, dont get me wrong they dont like us but pure hatred is reserved for their nearer neighbours.

Railwaymen v Biscuitmen was always a fixture to attract a decent crowd because of proximity, but has never really been up on the violence scale.

I'm hard pressed to remember a decent ruck ever.

I got pelted with rocks at Elm Park by fellow Swindon fans.  I think we lost 4:0.  I remember Ken Stroud was playing.

Regarding rivalries, Oxford was always the big one because we usually were in the same division.  That slope at the Manor was a joke.

Bristol Rovers, and Reading, have been in different divisions, which is not the case for Bristol City until recently.  I expect Bristol City to escape relegation, via a fat checque book in January.  We will be back to Oxford and Bristol Rovers as well as Cheltenham as rivals, for at least a season.  Unless things change, it's the Conference if we are lucky.  How are Forest Green doing?

In the 70s and 80s I think that Rovers fans were more 'mature' than their City counterparts.

I recall visiting Ashton Gate to watch us play Rovers not long after Eastville burned down. Absolute cracking game that we won 4-3 (I think ?). It was slightly marred by the fact that you had hooligans from 3 clubs in (and out of) the ground looking for a punch up.
