The comments section makes for some amusing reading, not much positivity on Tuchel

I feel that is about the best possible calibre the FA would be able to get. Doesn’t mean it will work out, but about the best available person for it.

Hope he gets the job. But only because I'd love the confused hate-boners from the our knuckle dragging fans if a German wins us something.

He's definitely a stepup from Southgate at the very least.

I'm watching Spain v Serbia and Spain are a totally different level to England now and it's not even all their first team.
Whoever takes the job needs to get England playing like a team. That much is obvious

Absolutely. And in Spain's case,it's not because of a high profile, successful club manager.

This is the modern world, shame we cant have an English Manager BUT the last English Manager to win top flight was Howard Wilkinson..

High bar to follow ref results in Southgate, we shall see.

Just a very quick glance but # of domestic managers managing in the top flight of their respective countries.

Spain 15/20
France 10/18
Germany 9/18
Portugal 15/18
England 3/20

….that’s probably why we’ve had to go foreign.
I’d love to see the stats on players as well.

It's not really something that meshes with my politics, but I do think that international coaches should be from the country (or at least have a strong link to, no problem with someone like Carsley who just has a mixed identity) unless it's a really small, developing nation. But I hope he does well.

His penchant for falling out with players is probably fine with England, as we have too much depth anyway in a lot of positions. Falling out with a couple of attacking midfielders would simplify things!

Pretty meh about the national team and similarly meh bout who manages them TBH. Lets be honest if we were to go down the English route and it wasn't Carsley it would have been either Potter or Howe neither of whom would fill be with an iota of enthusiasm.

I see it not gone down well in certain media outlets,I do wonder whether him not taking over until the new year is down to someone being savvy enough in the FA to realise that if he took over immediately they would have to navigate the whole media 'is he wearing a poppy' wankfest early in his tenure....

I am more than happy with it. Would love a English coach but just will not happen. Southgate was the one off and there is no one else really worth promoting from within.

I would actually approach it differently. Young managers who are already managing they should allow them to be involved in the youth level still and get an understanding of it so any manager has a good blend of management

No England manager has won the PL, no England manager has won the Champions League or earlier equivalents since 1981.  There aren’t any particular good England managers around.

TT is a good tactician, something which was probably Southgate’s weakness.

Seems like correct appointment to me

Also it’s sadly no surprise that the Daily Mail’s opinion is entirely predictable

I don't care who the manager is as long as they can succeed, best of luck to him.

Sure, but successful international managers aren't successful club managers generally.

Scaloni (Argentina manager) has never had a club job, managed the youth team, then the national side. Luis De La Fuente (Spain) hasn't had a club job for a decade and was never top tier. Carsley would have been the "follow the crowd" appointment style wise.

I'm interested to see how Tuchel does, you're right to say he's a good tactician. He's got a bad record as a politician though - which is the one thing Southgate excelled at.
