Sure, but successful international managers aren't successful club managers generally.

Scaloni (Argentina manager) has never had a club job, managed the youth team, then the national side. Luis De La Fuente (Spain) hasn't had a club job for a decade and was never top tier. Carsley would have been the "follow the crowd" appointment style wise.

I'm interested to see how Tuchel does, you're right to say he's a good tactician. He's got a bad record as a politician though - which is the one thing Southgate excelled at.
True this. Schon,Bearzot,Beckenbauer,Hidalgo,Vogts,Lemerre, Fuente and Scaloni. All won major international trophies with very few prior club achievements

Can't understand why his opinion is still sought after to be honest. Still, I suppose he's perfect for Talksport(Talkshite) generation

I agree with the Duke regarding Redknapp.

As an older fan (I watched the 1966 world cup on tv as a 9 year old) I remember the various managers since Ramsey - including the shambolic failures to qualify for various World Cup / European Championships. Consequently, I take a different vies of Southgate than many others - I think he did a good job in making us serious contenders at a succession of tournaments, and he is undoubtedly a decent man too. Also the players clearly respected him.

After 4 tournaments he'd probably had enough and has gone at the right time, but I doubt it will be long before those who wanted to see the back of Southgate begin to think that maybe he was better than he's been given credit for.

Should England lose to Germany at any point under Tuchel, I can imagine what the newspaper headlines will be like!

The advantage of someone like Carsley (and Southgate when he started),  is that through the U21 set up he has worked with many of the players who will be the core of the team going forward.

I think the continuation though from the under 21s sometimes doesn't help. Players being selected because you got on well with them at youth level etc. I quite like that Tuschel has no loyalty to any of them and with 18 months contract will be straight into it

Don’t really keep up with the Premier League anymore but my recollection was Lampard Chelsea boss & played a very attacking style of play.

Chelsea were exciting, scoring goals but letting too many in. To the point they sacked Lampard.

Tuchel came it and started to make them more defensive & towards the end of that season Chelsea hit a very sweet spot where you still had the Lampard attacking flair in the team mixed with Tuchels defensive steel & they won the CL.

…then the tide turned the other way as Tuchel turned Chelsea into a boring defensive team who didn’t score many.

Of course I could be well off with some (all of that)

Generally agree it shouldn’t follow blindly, but Angel Gomes was maybe one of the best performers of the Carsley reign and would he have been considered if it wasn’t his old u-21 manager?
