BBC starting coverage with the politics of the situation. Fair enough really. Infantino brought it up yesterday.

Plenty of time for the football later.

Already a dodgy VAR decision. No reason for that goal to be wiped off.

can't remember a worse opening game to any world cup

Equador aren't great, but pretty comfortable against this Sunday league (definitely not pub) team.

Equador are far superior but still a hard watch along with Dion Dublins rambling.

has there ever been a world cup where brasil have not been favourites ?

2002 when they won nobody was really talking about them winning it. All anyone could say was France or Argentina, neither of which made it past the groups.

Qatar, as host nation, are devoid of any footballing ability which shows up the corrupt decision to award the tournament to them.

Whilst your point about corruption is a fair one.
Not sure who hosts the WC has ever been decided on that nation being good at football.

I mean if the infrastructure is there then that Nation could / should be able to host.

Obviously that point doesn’t really work here.

…but…like you have F1 race tracks in countries that don’t even have any professional drivers representing them

Qatar beat Japan and South Korea in winning the Asia Cup. Not sure what that says about the standard of Asian football at the moment, but it's not promising.

South Africa are the only host nation not to get out of their group.

No host nation has ever failed to win a group game.

Tournament football is a month long competition, Grand Prix is a one day thing. There is supposed to be a legacy from hosting a WC.

I doubt Qatar will even score a goal. What a crap start and “fans” streaming out after half time.
