Nearly put this in the Covid thread, but like it or loathe it The Oasis is a Swindon institution and many people will be affected.

https://www.swindonadvertiser.co.uk/news/18879770.oasis-leisure-centre-closing-permanently/

I guess there is a chance someone will bail it out, but the council can't exactly be cash rich right now.

Reg is AWOL at the moment isn't he? I'll put his hat on then.

Part of the pay off for Swindon being an ever-growing down was always the manucipal facilities that would go with the expansion. It might always have been particularly fashionable, but generally pretty good.

Unfortunately this doesn't stand up to the maximising of profits for private enterprise. Nothing like the link centre or oasis would get built with any of the new estates on the outskirts. And now we have the rolling back of what was previously there.

Loved going on the Dome Busters (being 'brave' enough to go on the great white) and the wave pool as a nipper.

Amazing that trying to run a council leisure facility as a business has failed. Who would've thought.

TBF it's not "gone". The private operator has pulled out of the contract so won't continue to run it. The facility is still there if someone can be found to run it. Like SBC, for example.

I assume it has been heavily updated since I went there 30+ years ago, most leisure centres of similar age up here are being torn down and replaced with new ones, apart from the one in our local town which was built about 10 years back, won loads of design awards and then was ripped down after about 5 years because no one used it and the building was defective!

FWIW the private/charitable ownership model which seems to be failing at the Oasis also seems to work pretty well round here.

Maybe JT could get Wonga to sponsor it? The Wonga Wave Machine? The Go Bust Domebusters? It's got legs this one ....
