McCormack backs Storey to bounce back from penalty pain

SWINDON Town captain Alan McCormack has praised Miles Storey for standing up to be counted in Monday’s play-off penalty shootout against Brentford, insisting the teenager will experience enough celebrations in his career to outweigh the pain of defeat at Griffin Park.

Very disappointed with the "senior" players that maybe should have offered to step up an take that spot kick, fair play to the lad though im sure he will grow as a player because of this.

Players miss penalties. So what. Anyone who blames Storey for that is a complete bellend.

Stephen Darby did alright last time, if they want to take em then you got to let em.

At what age do managers stop wrapping younger players in cotton wool?

Penalties are missed by footballers old and young. It happens.

We were saying on the way back to the station that it was a surprise that Alan Mac didn't take one.

But to be fair if you aren't confident (which he has said was the case), then you really shouldn't be taking one.

From what I have seen on twitter, a few mongs aside, Miles has been quite rightly getting a lot of positive messages from the fans.

I was worried Alan might take one when he was dithering over the coin toss - you could see all the confidence had drained out of him at the mere thought of penalties.  (by no means having a go at him, just mean he did the right thing not taking one)

He was dithering because the coin toss didn't let a team chose which end the penalties were taken at and he wanted to check if this was the case.

I saw that when I watched the match back.  Is it usual for the decision to be made in advance about which end the penalties are taken?  I thought it was part of the coin toss?

54 PROCEDURES TO DETERMINE THE WINNER OF A MATCH OR HOME-AND-AWAY

Kicks from the penalty mark
Procedure
•The referee chooses the goal at which the kicks will be taken
• The referee tosses a coin and the team whose captain wins the toss decides whether to take the first or the second kick
• The referee keeps a record of the kicks being taken
• Subject to the conditions explained below, both teams take five kicks
• The kicks are taken alternately by the teams
• If, before both teams have taken five kicks, one has scored more goals than the other could score, even if it were to complete its five kicks, no more kicks are taken
• If, after both teams have taken fi ve kicks, both have scored the same number of goals, or have not scored any goals, kicks continue to be taken in the same order until one team has scored a goal more than the other from the same number of kicks
• A goalkeeper who is injured while kicks are being taken from the penalty mark and is unable to continue as goalkeeper may be replaced by a named substitute provided his team has not used the maximum number of substitutes permitted under the competition rules
•With the exception of the foregoing case, only players who are on the field of play at the end of the match, which includes extra time where appropriate, are eligible to take kicks from the penalty mark

Yup. Tough one really, the sun was going down. Do you let the keepers have the sun in their eyes or the attackers?

Refs will almost always choose the end where the home fans are.  If both ends were equally busy, I would be tempted go to the away end on the basis of 3 sides of fans v 1, so going the the away end evens things up a little (and is a little bit controversial to boot)
