Blackpool footballer, Jake Daniels, is the first to come out as gay.

Not quite sure why that’s a big news story, but there you are

Youth player, just sign pro terms. Knocked in 30 goals for the U-19s, made his first start earlier this month.

it shouldn't be.

But amazingly seems to be the first to do so since Justin Fashnu.

going to take a few more before it becomes a non event

Good for him, must be difficult to be gay in a predominantly ‘laddish’ environment. Hopefully he’s treated just like anyone else by fans, colleagues and opposition alike

Maybe but I think the days where the only out the closest gays were the hyper camp feminine gays is long gone…that was the stereotype of a gay man back 20 years ago (and partially true in my experience)

Plenty of ‘laddish’ gays out and about now a days - which to me seems a huge improvement from the early 00s

I hope this really is a non event & the abuse he gets on the football pitch is for his ability

Fair fucks to him for coming out at the start of his career rather than when winding down, which seems to have been the oath before now.

Easy to say it shouldn't be news but homosexuality is literally illegal in the country hosting the world cup this year. It's probably not likely to be an issue at Blackpool, but if he makes it at the top level it's going to be consequential on his career.

I hope it starts the domino effect so more established pros feel they can now come out. This needs to be a thing firmly left in the past.

Shouldn’t need too, though I do agree with you strangely enough.

Maybe not 37 but yeah you'd think he wouldn't struggle to get served at the bar.
